There is currently a lack of clarity concerning the types and frequency of mucosa injuries occurring in urine bladders among patients with indwelling urine catheters that are of modern design and material. The aim of the study was to identify and present the available information regarding mucosa injuries in urine bladders among adult patients with indwelling urine catheters. The research question was: What is known about mucosa injuries in urine bladders among patients with indwelling urine catheters? A scoping review applying the patient, exposure, and outcome framework. A preliminary search

Urinary catheters have been used for more than 3000 years, although materials have changed from wood to silver to rubber. Research continues to try and find the optimal catheter materials, which improve safety and quality of life. Advantages when comparing newer catheter materials are not always obvious but catheters coated with a hydrophilic layer may reduce urethral trauma and the incidence of urinary tract infections. However, extrapolation of the data is limited by lack of end-point standardization and heterogenous populations.

The past five decades have seen significant developments in the knowledge and practice of interventional radiology. Advancements in angiographic equipment have made interventional radiology a safe, minimally invasive preferred option in the treatment of a variety of diseases. Today, a range of catheters are available in the armamentarium of the interventional radiologist to suit different needs when conducting diagnostic angiograms or performing interventions in various vascular territories. The hardware required for interventions includes needles, wires, catheters, balloons, and stents. Cathe

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral venous access for extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) may be difficult in graft versus host disease (GVHD) patients, because of previous intravenous therapies and multiple peripheral cannulations; in this population of patients, ultrasound guided midline catheters may be an alternative option to central venous access.
METHODS: In this single-center, prospective preliminary study, we enrolled all consecutive patients with a diagnosis of GVHD and candidate to ECP, over a period of 10 months. We used inserted power injectable, non-valved, polyurethane, 20-25 cm single lum

Central venous catheters are used frequently in patients on hemodialysis as a bridge to a permanent vascular access. They are prone to frequent complications, including catheter-related bloodstream infection, catheter dysfunction, and central vein obstruction. There is a compelling need to develop new drugs or devices to prevent central venous catheter complications. We convened a multidisciplinary panel of experts to propose standardized definitions of catheter end points to guide the design of future clinical trials seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Our workgroup sugges

This article discusses one of the problems associated with urinary catheterisation. It focuses on catheter blockage and explains the effects of this on patients and the health service and aims to guide nurses in their management of this complex issue. The length of time a catheter remains functional is unique to the individual and imperative to good catheter care. Coupled with this the cause of the blockage needs to be identified before a treatment plan can be formulated. Encrustation is identified as a major problem and the reliability of using the pH value of urine to monitor is discussed. A

The use of double J catheters is usual in urologist's daily practice. The indication can be divided in prophylactic or therapeutic. Prophylactically, they prevent complications derived from endourological procedures, such as ureteral lesion or obstructive uropathy secondary to residual lithiasis or edema. Therapeutically, they treat obstructive uropathy of many different pathologies, either in an emergency setting or scheduled, such as lithiasis, stenosis, extrinsic compression of any nature or urinary tract tumors among others. Although they add clear benefits in both cases, they are not free

Nontunneled hemodialysis catheters (NTHCs) are typically used when vascular access is required for urgent renal replacement therapy. The preferred site for NTHC insertion in acute kidney injury is the right internal jugular vein followed by the femoral vein. When aided by real-time ultrasound, mechanical complications related to NTHC insertion are significantly reduced. The preferred site for tunneled hemodialysis catheters placement is the right internal jugular vein followed by the left internal jugular vein. Ideally, the catheter should be inserted on the opposite side of a maturing or plan

BACKGROUND: Indwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) are commonly used to manage malignant effusions. Tumor spread along the catheter tract remains a clinical concern for which limited data exist. We report the largest series of IPC-related catheter tract metastases (CTMs) to date, to our knowledge.
METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective review of IPCs inserted over a 44-month period. CTM was defined as a new, solid chest wall lesion over the IPC insertion site and/or the tunneled subcutaneous tract that was clinically compatible with a malignant tract metastasis.
RESULTS: One hundred te

Many hospitalized patients receive a urinary catheter during their stay. In 21-54% of patients, however, there is no appropriate indication for this. The most significant complication caused by the use of urinary catheters is the development of a urinary tract infection (UTI), one of the most common nosocomial infections. In 71-80% of hospital acquired UTIs a urinary catheter is present. The duration of the presence of a catheter is the major risk factor for catheter-associated UTI. Reducing the number of inappropriate catheterisations is an effective way of preventing catheter-related UTIs. I

BACKGROUND: The formation of bacterial biofilms on urinary catheters is a leading cause of urinary tract infections in intensive care units. Cytobacteriological examination of urine from patients is often misleading, due to the formation of these biofilms. Therefore, characterizing these biofilms and identifying the bacterial species residing on the surface of catheters are of major importance.
METHODS: We studied the formation of biofilms on the inner surface of urinary catheters using microbiological culture techniques, with the direct contact of catheter pieces with blood agar. The bacteri

The aim of this study was evaluation of adhesion of E. coli rods to urological catheters made of different synthetic materials. This study included 74 of E. coli strains isolated from urine and blood samples. All of these strains were isolated in the Clinical Microbiology Department of dr A. Jurasz University Hospital in 2003-2006. Analized strains significantly more often adhered to latex catheters than latex catheters covered by silicon and significantly more often adhered to PCV catheters than latex catheters covered by silicon. Four strains were characterized by a strong adhesion to all ki

PURPOSE: Mapping of the material viscoelastic property variation along the length axis of polymeric stents.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five pigtail ureteral stents and five percutaneous stents placed in vivo for different periods were studied. Viscoelastic property changes along the length of polymeric stents were measured using the dynamic mechanical analysis technique. The type of encrustations was identified using FT-IR spectroscopy and their morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
RESULTS: Variations in viscoelastic stiffness were confirmed for both types of stents. In a few cases,

Catheter-related infections in hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) are one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease. Staphylococcus aureus in HD patients and S. aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in PD patients are the most common causative organisms isolated. Currently, the diagnostic tests with highest yield in suspected catheter-related infection in HD patients have not been established, and tests used for central venous catheters (CVC) in general are applied. Management of the infected HD catheter and the use of antimicrobial t
