Ninety-five patients with healed gastric ulcers were treated with ranitidine 150 mg at night plus either Caved-S two tablets twice daily, or an identical placebo preparation. Treatment was continued for 2 years: the recurrence rate after 1 year was 12.5% for single therapy and 19% for combined therapy, and 30 and 40% respectively after 2 years (differences not significant). No serious side-effects were encountered, but patients found the combination therapy difficult to take, and it conferred no clinical advantage. In a 3 month follow-up after stopping maintenance therapy, 11% of the patients

Adaptation of organisms to extreme environments requires dramatic phenotypic changes. Studying these changes can elucidate mechanisms underlying phenotypic differences in the context of both evolution and human disease. The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, is a powerful model of extreme adaptation over a short evolutionary time scale. This fish species includes surface- and cave-dwelling ecotypes, with cavefish displaying many adaptations to subterranean life, including behavioral changes such as sleep loss, increased appetite, and reduced aggression. Unraveling the mechanisms underlying the

Bats play important roles in ecosystem functioning and host a remarkable diversity of blood parasites, including a limited number of bat-associated Trypanosoma species that have been described from Africa. Cave roosts provide critical habitat for bats and often support large, multispecies aggregations that may influence parasite transmission dynamics. Nevertheless, the diversity and host associations of trypanosomes within these environments remain poorly characterized, particularly in West Africa. To address this gap, we screened blood and ectoparasite samples from 57 bats representing ten sp

OBJECTIVES: To quantify and characterize aggression and violence against nurses, identify associated clinical characteristics, evaluate measures in response, and explore predictors of recurrent incidents in the ICU.
DESIGN: Retrospective single-center study. Incidence and characteristics of aggression and violence against ICU nurses were the primary outcomes. Aggression was defined as hostile behavior or resistance to care without intent to harm. Violence comprised verbal, physical, or sexual acts to threaten or inflict harm. Secondary outcomes included risk factors for recurrent incidents, d

A detailed understanding of the dural anatomy of the trigeminal nerve, particularly the Meckel's cave, and the petrous apex is essential to accomplish an interdural approach in dumbbell-shaped trigeminal schwannomas (TSs) from the middle fossa side. A 34-year-old gentleman with left hemifacial pain and masseter weakness on examination was found to have a dumbbell-shaped TS around the petrous apex occupying the adjacent middle cranial fossa, posterior fossa, and the cavernous sinus. We performed an extended middle fossa approach (EMFA), taking an interdural route, and with the addition of an ex

The time that bats emerge and subsequently return from a colonial roost determines their maximum foraging period and influences their exposure to mortality risks. The order in which different age and sex cohorts emerge and return reflects variation in these cohorts' resource requirements. The critically endangered Southern Bent-wing Bat (Miniopterus orianae bassanii) is an Australian insectivorous cave-roosting colonial bat. Resource limitation is hypothesised to have contributed to its decline but may not affect all cohorts equally. We tagged and monitored 3462 wild Southern Bent-wing Bats ov

BACKGROUND: Six Homo naledi early juveniles were recovered from U.W. 101 (Dinaledi Chamber), U.W. 102 (Lesedi Chamber), and U.W. 110 in the Rising Star cave system.
AIM: This paper develops the information for the H. naledi early juvenile life stage, as defined by a combination of deciduous and permanent dentition, and the eruption of the first permanent molar.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The growing number of young individuals recovered from the Rising Star cave system allows us to gain a better understanding of their variation, or lack thereof, and provides a basis to estimate broad ranges for a

In 1932, skeletal remains of two Neanderthal individuals, a young adult female and a 3-4-year-old child, were discovered in Subalyuk Cave in Northern Hungary [1,2]. Results of the anthropological examination were published some years after this important discovery. Methodological progress encouraged re-examination of the material during the last few years. Radiocarbon dating revealed a chronological age of 39,732-39,076 cal. BP for the adult female and 36,117-35,387 cal. BP for the child [3]. Morphological paleopathological studies of these Neanderthal remains uncovered distinct evidence of sk

A new extinct subspecies of the Mehely's horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus mehelyi scythotauricus subsp. nov., is described on the base of an incomplete skull from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. It is the largest member of the R. euryale group. In terms of the evolutionary level, it is intermediate between Plio-Pleistocene R. mehelyi birzebbugensis Storch, 1974 and recent members of the species, but its large size and relatively narrow upper molars may indicate belonging to a separate phylogenetic lineage within R. mehelyi Matschie, 1901. R. mehelyi scythota

Bats are reservoir hosts of many zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential. We utilized single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze the immune response in bat lungs upon in vivo infection with a double-stranded RNA virus, Pteropine orthoreovirus PRV3M. Bat neutrophils were distinguished by high basal IDO1 expression. NK cells and T cells were the most abundant immune cells in lung tissue. Three distinct CD8+ effector T cell populations could be delineated by differential expression of KLRB1, GFRA2, and DPP4. Select NK and T clusters increased expression of genes involved in T ce

A dentary fragment of a great evening bat Ia io Thomas, 1902 found in 2020 in the Pleistocene deposits of the Lang Trang karstic cave in northern Vietnam is described. This rare species of large tropical bats now inhabits Nepal, eastern India, southern China, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam and as a fossil is known from the Pleistocene of China. In Vietnam the fossil remains of this species have been discovered for the first time. By the total size and lower molar structure, the specimen from the Lang Trang cave is most similar to the subspecies Ia io peninsulata Soisook et al., 2017 that now occu

The dental remains of a large badger collected in 2020 from the Pleistocene deposits of the Lang Trang karstic cave in northern Vietnam are described. The molars М1 and М1 exhibit the features that are characteristic of Arctonyx collaris Cuvier, 1825. At the same time, the length of M1 of the Lang Trang form exceeds that of modern greater hog badgers. Based on the size and structure of the teeth, it can be assigned to the subspecies A. c. rostratus Matthew et Granger, 1923 known from the Pleistocene of China and Southeast Asia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute bacterial prostatitis is characterized by acute inflammation of the prostate gland accompanied by the presence of pain and other urinary tract or systemic symptoms. Prostatitis is a relatively common disease of the urinary tract in men, However, this case reports a man diagnosed with acute bacterial prostatitis with an unusual presentation, as well as an unusual pathogen and a unique mechanism of colonization.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old male with no past medical history presented to our facility for right-sided buttock pain associated with dysuria, diarrhea, and perianal b

In the summer of 1967, a relatively complete skeleton of a juvenile was excavated from the Ishkeenickh River Cave Site (now the Ksi Hlginx River) in British Columbia, Canada, dating from approximately 2000 years ago. This individual, likely aged between 10 and 12 years at time of death, displays osteological features consistent with a chronic arthropathy. The most striking pathological changes are on the spine, with bony ankylosis present on several of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae. Lesions can also be observed on the ribs, the ilia, the femora, and a tibia. The arthritic conditions of j

A recurring theme of late Upper Palaeolithic Magdalenian human bone assemblages is the remarkable rarity of primary burials and the common occurrence of highly-fragmentary human remains mixed with occupation waste at many sites. One of the most extensive Magdalenian human bone assemblages comes from Gough's Cave, a sizeable limestone cave set in Cheddar Gorge (Somerset), UK. After its discovery in the 1880s, the site was developed as a show cave and largely emptied of sediment, at times with minimal archaeological supervision. Some of the last surviving remnants of sediment within the cave wer

The Middle Paleolithic site of Amud Cave, Israel, was occupied by Neanderthals at two different time periods, evidenced by two chronologically and stratigraphically distinct depositional sub-units (B4 and B2/B1) during MIS 4 and MIS 3, respectively. The composition of both hunted large fauna and naturally-deposited micromammalian taxa is stable at the site over time, despite a ∼ 10 ky gap between the two occupation phases. However, while gazelle is the most ubiquitous hunted species throughout the occupation, isotopic analysis showed that there is a marked change in Neanderthal hunting ranges

Three pathologically modified bones (cranium, left mandible, iliac bone) of a cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) were found in the Last Glacial deposits (OIS 3) in the caves of the Vel'ká Fatra carst, Slovak republic. Despite of thorough paleontological examination, the bear bones were examined by experts in forensic medicine, traumatology and stomatology, too. The pathological changes were found in the tooth bed on the right side of the maxilla at the place of M1, being interpreted as a result of odontogenic purulent inflammation of soft tissues of tooth bed and surrounding bone. The iliac bone has

OBJECT: In this paper the authors' goal was to present their clinical experience with lesions of the pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, lateral sphenoid sinus, cavernous sinus, petrous apex, and Meckel cave using simple and extended endoscopic transpterygoid approaches to the lateral skull base.
METHODS: Simple and expanded endoscopic transpterygoid approaches were performed in a series of 13 patients with varying pathology that included lateral sphenoid sinus encephaloceles, benign and malignant sinonasal tumors, and lesions of neural origin.
RESULTS: A gross-total resection was ac

In a 25-year-old woman with episodic periorbital-temporal pain who eventually developed a sixth nerve palsy, magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lesion predominantly in the Meckel cave that was found to be a capillary hemangioma arising from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. Hemangiomas of the Meckel cave must be considered in cases of facial pain with a sixth nerve palsy. even if there are no clinical findings of trigeminal neuropathy.

This paper describes tuberculosislike lesions affecting the spine of Neolithic skeleton found in Arene Candide cave (Liguria, Italy) and representing one of the earliest cases of this disease in Europe. The burial is attributed to middle Neolithic (square-mouthed pottery culture) whose layers date, by 14C, to the first half of the fourth millennium BC. The skeleton, well preserved in the postcranial portion, belongs to a male aged about 15 years having a very light body build. Resorptive lesions localized to the lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebral bodies, collapse and angular kyphosis, r
