BACKGROUND: To report a well-documented case of both allergic contact dermatitis and occupational asthma due to chromate exposure in a 48-year-old floorer.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 48-year-old floorer, occupationally exposed to cement and with a documented chromate contact dermatitis, reported dyspnea and wheezing after work. These conditions were demonstrated by self-measured sequential peak expiratory flows. A first bronchial provocation (BPT) with potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) (0.3% nebulized for a total of 60 minutes) led to pronounced and sustained decreases in forced expiratory volume in

Bioactive bone cement (BABC) is a novel artificial bone cement. It has some noteworthy characteristics that are applicable to neurological surgery. The toxicity of BABC to the nervous system was tested by implanting BABC and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement as a control at the parietal and the suboccipital regions of the skull in beagles. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was tested before and after implantation. Sections of the cerebral cortex and the acoustic nerve were examined at 3 and 6 months after implantation. No abnormal ABR was found in any animals. Histological examination o

To compensate for the loss of tissue after transferring the temporalis muscle, it is advisable to fill the temporalis fossa for aesthetic reasons. In so doing, we have used IONOS bone cement to augment the fossa after muscle transfers. Twelve procedures have been performed within the past 3 years. The average follow-up time has been 23 months. Surgery was required in 6 cases following delayed reconstruction to rehabilitate the paralyzed face after loss of facial nerve function, four times to stabilize a duraplasty at the skull base and twice for aesthetic facial augmentation. A prefabricated I

Various bone cements containing zirconium oxide (ZrO2) as X-ray contrast medium were tested for radioactivity by means of a gamma spectrometer. All measured bone cements (PALACOS, IMPLAST, SULFIX-6) showed a certain degree of radioactivity. The radiation source in the bone cement is the added zirconium oxide, which is polluted by radioactive elements. As these X-ray contrast media remain in the body for decades as components of the bone cement, the radioactive zirconium oxides should be substituted by high purity radiation-free zirconium oxide or barium sulfate.

We have reviewed the results of treating 75 fractures of the proximal femoral shaft in the presence of a cemented femoral prosthesis. A simple radiographic classification into four types is proposed, and suggestions are made on the appropriate management of each. Comminuted fractures around the implant need early revision, whilst spiral fractures in this region may be treated conservatively or by operation. Transverse fractures at the level of the tip of the prosthesis are difficult to manage, and may require open reduction and internal fixation.

Experimental and thermographic investigations, clinical and radiological long-term studies proved that the replacement of herniated cervical discs by bone cement has to be regarded as an operative procedure equivalent to other techniques using auto- or homogenous bone-graft. Tissue reactions on the allograft were studied. There is no risk of thermonecrosis at the adjacent neurogenic structures by polymerization heat. Clinical late results correspond with those of other operative techniques, the morbidity rates are about the same. Cervical anterior interbody fusion using PMMA is an alternative

BACKGROUND: Several treatment options have been proposed for restoring primary teeth in children. Recently, Zirconia crowns have been introd … rowns. Pair-matched incisors were randomly assigned to receive either resin cement or GIC for crown cementation. Crowns were clinically evaluated for retention, and gingival condition at 1-week, 1-,3-, 6- and 12-month recall appointments.
RESULTS: Twenty-six children were enrolled in the study with a total of 42 pair-matched incisors (i.e. 84 teeth). Follow- …

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) in elderly patients pose challenges due to bone destruction and surgical risks. This case report describes a minimally invasive approach using calcium phosphate cement (CPC) vertebroplasty and short fusion with cement augmentation of pedicle screws (CAPS) in a 91-year-old woman with severe OVF. The patient underwent CPC vertebroplasty at L1 and CAPS fixation at T12-L2, followed by osteoporosis medication. She regained mobility with no complications, screw loosening, or loss of correction at a two-year follow-up. We suggest this combined CPC-CAPS techniqu

PURPOSE: A handmade antibiotic cement spacer is the easiest method for producing a spacer for treating chronic periprosthetic joint infection after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, a molded spacer offers more head and stem sizes to match the patient's anatomy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional outcomes and complications between handmade and molded spacers.
METHODS: This retrospective case note study compared the functional results, re-infection rate, and spacer related complications after the first stage and second stage exchange arthroplasty between a handmade sp

AIM: To compare fracture resistance between the cement-retained (CR), screw-retained (SR), and combined cement- and screw-retained (CCSR) metal-ceramic (MC) implant-supported molar restorations and the fracture mode after vertical loading simulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty MC molar restorations were fabricated on thirty tilted dental implants that were repositioned using prefabricated or universal castable long abutments (UCLA) with 15° of angulation divided into three groups of ten specimens each. Group C: CR, group S: SR, and group CS: cement- and screw-retained. The crowns in group

BACKGROUND: Two different procedures, used for percutaneous augmentation of vertebral compression fractures were compared, with respect to height restoration and maintenance after cyclic loading. Additionally the impact of the cement volume used was investigated.
METHODS: Wedge compression fractures were created in 36 human cadavaric vertebrae (T10-L3). Twenty-seven vertebrae were treated with the SpineJack® with different cement volumes (maximum, intermediate, and no cement), and 9 vertebrae were treated with Balloon Kyphoplasty. Vertebral heights were measured pre- and postfracture as well

INTRODUCTION: Periacetabular cement extrusion during total hip arthroplasty is a frequent adverse event. This study sought to determine the contributing factors and any functional consequences of this type of extrusion, which has been insufficiently studied in the literature.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the occurrence of periacetabular cement extrusion could be the cause of an alteration in the functional result and/or intrapelvic complications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a series of 269 total hip prostheses consecutively implanted through a posterolateral approac

Twenty patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head underwent 28 total hip arthroplasties using cement from 1981 to 1985. Femoral reconstruction was by use of second-generation cement techniques. Twenty-four hips in 17 patients were available for review at a mean follow-up period of 7.7 years. The mean age at surgery was 55 years. Clinical evaluation demonstrated 79% excellent, 4% good, and 4% fair results. Three hips (12.5%) required revision for loosening. The cumulative probability of survival was estimated to be 85.7% at 10 years. Second-generation cement techniques and implant designs
