INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic infection after breast reconstruction is not an uncommon complication, with incidence up to 24%. Antibiotic resistance of urinary tract pathogens has increased worldwide. The purpose of this study is to provide information regarding local resistance pattern of urinary pathogens to the commonly used antibiotics. One hundred and seventeen cases of community-acquired urinary tract infections were studied. The most common group of patients was the uncomplicated acute cystitis in women. The in vitro activity of cefetamet, the microbiologically active metabolite of the orally administered prodrug cefetamet pivoxil, was compared with that of cephalexin, cefaclor, cefuroxime and amoxicillin. Two strains of penicillin resistant (PR) pneumococci were isolated recently from cerebrospinal fluid of two children with meningitis. Penicillin resistance was detected by using a lug disc of oxacillin in the Stokes disc diffusion method. METHODS: This observational study was based on antibiotic dispensing data from Waitaha Canterbury. Outcome measures included number of dispensings/1,000 inhabitants per year and defined daily doses/1,000 inhabitants per day (DIDs), expressed as average annual change (AAC). A 7-week-old golden retriever puppy was presented with acute onset of marked facial inflammation and pustular dermatitis, markedly enlarged submandibular lymph nodes, and pyrexia. Antibiotics are among the most prescribed medications worldwide, yet their direct effects on eukaryotic tissues remain largely unexplored. Here, we used in vitro calcium imaging to determine if clinically relevant concentrations of common antibiotics alter mouse and human dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuron activity.
