Two grams of cefmenoxime (CMX) was administered by one-shot intravenous injection to the patients in normal pressure hydrocephalus without meningitis, and the transference of CMX into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from blood was investigated. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of ketoprofen have been measured in 36 patients hospitalised for sciatica. Diagnostic lumbar puncture was done 15 min to 13 h after a single 100 mg intramuscular dose of ketoprofen. Serum and CSF were sampled at the same time. Thirty-six patients with reactive results in the cerebrospinal fluid to the Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay (CSF-TPHA) were investigated by further serological tests for confirmation of active neurosyphilis. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were tested for their cytotoxicity to polymorphonuclear neutrophil leucocytes (PMN) using a 51Cr release assay. Most samples from patients with pyogenic meningitis damaged PMN while normal CSF samples did not. No difference was found between the cytotoxic activity of CSF from patients with pneumococcal meningitis and from patients with meningococcal meningitis. It is, therefore, unlikely that a CSF leucocidin plays an important part in producing the high mortality of pneumococcal meningitis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was allowed to drop straight into Hanks's balanced salt solution. After centrifugation the pellet was resuspended and mixed with sheep erythrocytes. The mixture was further handled as in the E-rosette test with peripheral blood lymphocytes. CSF from 20 individuals were investigated, and rosette-forming cells (RFC) were found in all. Because neurosyphilis may progress despite therapy with the recommended penicillin regimens, 15 subjects with positive tests for syphilis in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were studied. All of these patients had CSF pleocytosis.
