During mammalian terrestrial locomotion, body flexibility facilitated by the vertebral column is expected to be correlated with observed modes of locomotion, known as gait (e.g., sprawl, trot, hop, bound, gallop). In small- to medium-sized mammals (average weight up to 5 kg), the relationship between locomotive mode and vertebral morphology is largely unexplored. Here we studied the vertebral column from 46 small- to medium-sized mammals. Nine vertebrae across cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions were chosen to represent the whole vertebral column. Vertebra shape was analysed using three-dim

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the dental calcification stage (DCS) of the mandibular teeth and the cervical vertebral maturation stage (CVMS) in patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP).
METHODS: One hundred sixty-two UCLP patients (100 males and 62 females) between 8-16 years old were included in this study. The DCS was estimated by the Demirjian method and was converted to the dental age (DA). The CVMS was evaluated by the Baccetti method. The DA of mandibular teeth on two sides of the cleft were analyzed using a t-test

Morphological and morphometric examinations were conducted on skeletons of knotty-tail (knt/knt) mouse, a new autosomal recessive mutant. The knt/knt mice have short and knotty tails. The number of caudal vertebrae is reduced and their deformed caudal vertebrae show no parallelism between the epiphyseal planes and no osseous fusions. Morphological changes, except for the caudal vertebrae, are confined to the neural arches of the axis in knt/knt mice. As for the tail anomaly, the knt gene seems to have the same action as the tk gene, but knt/knt mice differ from other strains with respect to ce

OBJECTIVE: Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) using a titanium mesh cage (TMC) is associated with a high rate of subsidence. This study aims to evaluate the potential advantages of utilizing 3D-printed titanium vertebrae as an alternative to TMC in ACCF procedures.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent ACCF at our hospital between March 2017 and June 2023. Patient demographics, surgical parameters (operation duration and blood loss), functional assessments (Barthel score, Morse Fall Scale (MFS), anterior cervical corpectomy index (aCCI)), hospit

The Occipito (O) -C2 angle reflects the correct craniocervical spine alignment; however, the poor image quality of standard intraoperative fluoroscopy at times lead to inaccurate measurements. Herein, we preliminarily investigated the relationship between the O-C2 angle and the Gonion-C2 distance, which is based on the positioning of the mandible and the cervical spine. We enrolled patients who underwent cervical spine radiography in neutral, flexion, and extension positions from January 2020 to October 2020. The difference by posture changes for each parameter was defined as the Δ value, and

While Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) is well described in the literature to cause osteomyelitis, non-typeable H. influenzae has not. In areas where vaccination is routine, the prevalence of Hib has declined, whereas, in contrast, the prevalence of non-typeable H. influenza has increased. Generally, the non-typeable strains are less invasive but can access the vascular system by transmural migration through epithelial tight junctions or by an independent intercellular mechanism. Herein, we described a case of a 79-year-old man with the first case of non-typeable H. influenzae causing cervi

The sixth cervical vertebra (C6) has unique morphology due to a ventral extension from the transverse process known as the ventral lamina. Little information was found regarding the prevalence and clinical relevance of morphologic variations. Aims of this observational, retrospective study were to characterize C6 morphologic variations in a large sample of horses. Cervical radiographic studies of 100 horses were retrieved. Data recorded were signalment, clinical history, morphology of the C6 ventral lamina, presence of articular process osteoarthritis, and presence of static vertebral canal st

A 4-year-old boy developed progressive neck pain and an expansile osteogenic lesion of C2; the diagnosis was an aneurysmal bone cyst. An image-guided biopsy with 3D CT planning was performed followed by Ethibloc injection into the aneurysmal bone cyst. Subsequent CT and MR images demonstrated embolization material in the vertebrobasilar system, and the patient died of brain stem and cerebellar infarction 23 hours after the intervention. The course of events and technical considerations are discussed.

The traumatic C3-C4 level injuries sustained by young athletes and documented by the National Football Head and Neck Injury Registry are discussed. Twenty-eight of 885 (2.8 per cent) injuries involved the C3-C4 vertebrae. Review of these cases reveals that the response to energy inputs at the C3-C4 level differ from that of those involving the upper (C1-C2) and lower (C5-C6) cervical segments. Specifically, these lesions appear unique with regard to infrequency of bony fracture, difficulty in effecting and maintaining reduction, and their more favorable response to early aggressive treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate segmentation and classification of cervical spine fractures are essential for timely diagnosis and clinical decision-making in trauma care. Existing deep learning approaches often require extensive manual annotations and struggle to maintain anatomical consistency across vertebral levels, limiting their reliability and generalization.
METHODS: We propose a unified three-stage framework that integrates self-supervised representation learning, structure-aware segmentation, and vertebra-level classification. A bone-window 3D masked autoencoder first pretrains the encoder t

A 4-year-old Nigerian Dwarf wether presented for chronic regurgitation and cervical swelling of three years duration. Physical examination revealed a large ventral cervical mass. The goat made repeated attempts to swallow and regurgitate, but the mass did not change significantly in size. Cervical radiographs revealed segmental esophageal dilation to the level of the thoracic inlet. CT revealed a transitional seventh cervical vertebra with fused right and left ribs, resulting in extramural esophageal compression and obstruction at the level of the thoracic inlet. This is the first report of a

This study aimed to investigate sex differences in craniomaxillofacial parameters in children and adolescents. Lateral cephalograms were obtained from 340 subjects (141 male, 199 female) aged 6 to 18 years, and their craniofacial characteristics and cervical vertebral maturity were assessed using the quantitative cervical vertebral maturity (QCVM) method. Age-based stratified analyses on craniofacial parameters and further comparison in QCVM Ⅲ subjects were performed. Among all analyses, male subjects had significantly greater value than females in sex-different parameters except for facial co
