[Compared parasitic infection of Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothridae) in Cyprinidae species: Rutilus rubilio and Scardinius erythrophthalmus in two dam reserves in Tunisia].

Monitoring quantitative parameters of parasitism by ligula intestinalis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothridae) was performed by examining 516 fish belonging to two introduced freshwater species: Rutilus rubilio (350 individuals) and Scardinius erythrophthalmus (166 individuals). These fish were collected in two dam reserves in Tunisia, Sidi Salem and Nebhana. The analysis of the aquatic bird's composition in these two reserves revealed the existence of piscivorous bird species that were previously reported as final host of Ligula. Monitoring the bird's composition highlighted higher relative abundance a…

First record of the invasive American tapeworm Ophiotaenia saphena (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) in the Tokyo daruma pond frog Pelophylax porosus porosus in Japan.

Adult proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus Ophiotaenia (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) were recovered from the endemic Japanese amphibian species, Pelophylax porosus porosus (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Tochigi, Japan. As a result of molecular analyses based on the 28S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes, these worms were identified as Ophiotaenia saphena, a species native to North America. Their morphological features were also consistent with those of O. saphena. This species is presumed to have been introduced into Japan with the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus (Ranid…

Morphological updates, host-specificity, molecular data and phylogenetic analysis of Acanthobothrium coronatum (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea), a neglected parasite of the nursehound Scyliorhinus stellaris.

Acanthobothrium is the most speciose genus of onchoproteocephalidean cestodes, whose adults parasitize the intestine of elasmobranch fishes. Acanthobothrium coronatum, the type species of the genus described from Mediterranean elasmobranchs, remains a little known parasite, with the most recent reports dating back to the fifties. We hereby investigate host-specificity and redescribe A. coronatum from the same locality of its original description by using light and scanning electron microscopy approaches. Moreover, molecular and phylogenetic data inferred from the analysis of the 28S rDNA gene

Towards a robust systematic baseline of Neotropical fish tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae): amended diagnoses of two genera from the redtail catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus.

Species of two monotypic genera, Ephedrocephalus Diesing, 1850 and Zygobothrium Diesing, 1850 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), parasites of one of the most basal members of the catfish family Pimelodidae, the redtail catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, in the Neotropical Region, are redescribed based on the evaluation of type specimens and newly collected material. Generic diagnoses are amended to provide a robust baseline for the future re-arrangement of the classification of proteocephalid cestodes. Ephedrocephalus is typified by the medullary position of the ovary and uterus, the cortical …

A Common Eurasian Fish Tapeworm, Caryophyllaeides fennica (Cestoda), in Western North America: Further Evidence of 'Amphi-Pacific' Vicariance in Freshwater Fish Parasites.

The freshwater fish faunas of the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions show similarities but also notable differences, resulting in diverse distributions of their parasites. Relatively few parasite species occur in both regions and fewer still have been examined using molecular data. We report a rare example of 'amphi-Pacific' distribution, involving the common Palaearctic parasite, the caryophyllidean cestode Caryophyllaeides fennica (Schneider, 1902), in the chiselmouth Acrocheilus alutaceus Agassiz and Pickering, 1855, an endemic cyprinid in northwestern Nearctic, Oregon. A new monozoic tapeworm, Lobulovarium longiovatum n. g., n. sp. (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), from barbs Puntius spp. (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) in the Indomalayan region.

A new caryophyllidean cestode is described from barbs Puntius spp. (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), with P. sophore (Hamilton) as its type-host, in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins in India and Bangladesh, and a new genus, Lobulovarium n. g., is proposed to accommodate it. The genus belongs to the Lytocestidae because its vitelline follicles are situated in the cortex. It is typified by: (i) a peculiar ovary, which is roughly H-shaped, but with asymmetrical, irregular lobes on its ventral and dorsal sides; (ii) an extensive vitellarium formed by numerous vitelline follicles scattered throug

Selected pathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural changes associated with an infection by Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda) plerocercoids in Coregonus lavaretus (L.) (Coregonidae).

The pathological changes induced by an infection of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) plerocercoids in powan, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), from Loch Lomond, Scotland, were assessed using immunohistochemical and ultrastructural techniques. In a sample of 26 powan, the occurrence of encysted plerocercoids of D. dendriticum on the outer surface of the stomach was 38.5% (n = 10) with the number of cysts ranging from 4 to 15 and measuring 4.2 +/- 1.0 mm x 3.4 +/- 0.9 mm (mean +/- SD). Histological examination of intestinal samples also revealed plerocercoids (2-21) encapsulated within a pro

THE HIDDEN DIVERSITY OF THE ENIGMATIC ARCHIGETES (CESTODA: CARYOPHYLLIDEA) IN NORTH AMERICA: TWO NEW COMBINATIONS AND DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES FROM GOLDEN SHINER.

Tapeworms of the order Caryophyllidea (Cestoda) are widespread parasites of cypriniform and siluriform fishes. Most species occur in suckers (Catostomidae) in the Nearctic, including 4 species of the enigmatic genus Archigetes Leuckart, 1878. Species of this genus can mature in oligochaetes, i.e., may have a monoxenous (direct) life cycle. In this article, Archigetes notemigoni n. sp. is described from the golden shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas (Mitchill, 1814) (Leuciscidae) in Wisconsin. The new species differs from other Archigetes species in having a small (≤2 mm long), spindle-shaped body w…

An examination of nervous system revealed unexpected immunoreactivity of both secretory apparatus and excretory canals in plerocercoids of two broad tapeworms (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Dibothriocephalus ditremus and Dibothriocephalus latus are diphyllobothriidean tapeworms autochthonous to Europe. Their larval stages (plerocercoids) may seriously alter health of their intermediate fish hosts (D. ditremus) or cause intestinal diphyllobothriosis of the final human host (D. latus). Despite numerous data on the internal structure of broad tapeworms, many aspects of the morphology and physiology related to host–parasite co-existence remain unclear for these 2 species. The main objective of this work was to elucidate functional morphology of the frontal part (scolex) of plerocerco

Migration of Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda) and changes in 5-HT (serotonin) levels in the rat host following parenteral and oral 5-HT administration.

Changes in the distribution of the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta in the rat small intestine were studied for up to 3 h following intraperitoneal, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and oral administration of 5-HT. Changes in 5-HT levels in the arterial circulation, intestinal lumen, and in worm tissue were also monitored. In all cases following 5-HT administration there was an anteriad migration by H. diminuta. The extent of the migration was dose dependent, the higher the dose the more marked the migration response. Normal 5-HT levels in the parasitized gut are higher than those in uninfected anima

Ultrastructure of the uterus, embryonic envelopes and the coracidium of the enigmatic tapeworm Tetracampos ciliotheca (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidea) from African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to study the ultrastructure of the uterus and egg morphology in the enigmatic bothriocephalidean tapeworm Tetracampos ciliotheca. The uterine wall, underlain by well-developed muscle bundles, consists of a syncytial epithelium which is characterized by the abundance of free ribosomes, mitochondria and cisternae of granular endoplasmic reticulum (GER). On the apical surface of the uterine epithelium, there is an abundant network of cytoplasmic microlamellae projecting into the uterine lumen. The lumen is filled with freely lying eggs which are loc

Complete sequence and characterization of the mitochondrial genome of Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum, the type species of genus Diphyllobothrium (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae), using next generation sequencing.

We first constructed and characterized the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence of Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum, the type species of genus Diphyllobothrium, using next generation sequencing (NGS). The mitogenome of D. stemmacephalum was 13,716bp, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 2 longer intergenic non-coding regions, and has features common to mitogenomes of other cestodes. Although it has been accepted that tRNA for serine (trnS2(UCN)) in Platyhelminthes lacks a D arm, the trnS2(UCN) of D. stemmacephalum was predicted to have a paired D arm

Three new species of Spiniloculus (Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea) from Chiloscyllium punctatum (Elasmobranchii: Orectolobiformes) off Borneo with clarification of the identity of the type of the genus.

The type species (Spiniloculus mavensis Southwell, 1925) of the previously monotypic tetraphyllidean genus Spiniloculus Southwell, 1925 is redescribed from the type material from Moreton Bay, Australia. As a consequence the identity of this species is definitively resolved. Three new species in the genus, all collected from Chiloscyllium punctatum Müller et Henle (brownbanded bambooshark), in Borneo, are described. Spiniloculus calhouni sp. n. conspicuously differs from all three of its congeners in its possession of post-poral testes. Spiniloculus fylerae sp. n. and Spiniloculus paigeae sp. n

Impact of treatment with praziquantel, silymarin and/or beta-glucan on pathophysiological markers of liver damage and fibrosis in mice infected with Mesocestoides vogae (Cestoda) tetrathyridia.

Mesocestoides vogae tetrathyridia infection in mice causes hepatocyte injury, hepatic granulomatous inflammmation, liver fibrosis and chronic peritonitis manifested with portal hypertension. To reduce the detrimental effect of parasites on the host liver, the effect of the anthelmintic drug praziquantel (PZQ) in combination with natural products silymarin (an antioxidant) and beta-glucan (an immunomodulator) was investigated. The therapeutic effect of drugs was assessed by means of aminotransferase (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)) activities, content of alb

Molecular evidence of three closely related species of Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea): a case of recent speciation in different fish hosts (Catostomidae)?

Monozoic tapeworms (Caryophyllidea) are dominant components of parasite communities of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America, with Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 representing one of the more species-rich genera. Molecular (28S rDNA) and morphological (including scanning electron microscopy and histology) evaluation of newly collected tapeworms from different fish hosts revealed the existence of four similar (and three closely related) species of Biacetabulum. These four species differ from their congeners by having a long body (up to 48 mm long) with a very long, slender neck (its length represen

Four new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849 (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) from the spotted skate, Raja straeleni Poll, off the Western Cape, South Africa.

The examination of eight spotted skates, Raja straeleni Poll, resulted in the discovery of four new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849, namely A. microhabentes sp. n., A. microtenuis sp. n., A. crassus sp. n., and A. dolichocollum sp. n., located off the Western Cape of South Africa. With a total of over 200 valid species of Acanthobothrium recognised worldwide, the use of an integrative approach becomes imperative in the interest of simplifying interspecific comparisons between congeners. In accordance with this, the four new species were incorporated into the category classificatio
