Attractiveness of chickens and bobwhite quail for Culex nigripalpus.

An experiment to determine if wild Culex nigripalpus preferentially enter lard-can traps baited with chickens or bobwhite quail was conducted. A strong preference for the chicken-baited trap was observed. Further development of transmission models for St. Louis encephalitis virus in southern Florida should consider increased biting rates on sentinel chickens and the consequences for the interpretation of sentinel seroconversion data.

Age-dependent resistance to Cryptosporidium baileyi infection in chickens.

The age-dependent aspects of resistance to Cryptosporidium baileyi were studied in chickens orally inoculated with C. baileyi oocysts at 1 and 9 wk of age. The prepatent period was significantly shorter and the patency was significantly longer in younger birds. Chickens infected at 1 wk of age excreted 3 times the number of oocysts excreted by those inoculated at 9 wk of age. There was a good correlation between the length of the patent period and the total oocyst output of chickens. These results indicate that both innate and acquired resistance to C. baileyi are age-related. The numbers of a…

Visceral granulomas in chickens infected with a filamentous bacteria.

Visceral granulomas containing gram-positive filamentous bacteria were diagnosed in eight chickens collected from processing plants over a period of 4 years. Formalin-fixed tissues were submitted from the chickens after slaughter, but no specimens suitable for bacterial culture were received. The bacteria lacked similar tinctorial, morphologic, and ultrastructural features of other gram-positive bacteria that have been identified in chickens. The bacteria were visible with hematoxylin and eosin and faintly visible with Gomori methenamine-silver, but negative with periodic acid-Schiff and Fite-…

Postnatal development of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues in chickens.

The postnatal development of chicken mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues of the eyes, lungs, and intestines were investigated with monoclonal … rticulum, and Peyer's patches generally contained germinal centers from 12 weeks of age on. Because chickens as young as 2 weeks old had germinal centers in bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue and cecal tonsils, these areas were probably highly stimulated by antigens. Isotype-specific monoclonal antibodies were used to detect IgM-, IgG-, and IgA-bearing fo …

Transfer of experimental glomerulonephritis in chickens by mononuclear cells.

We have produced experimental autoimmune glomerulonephritis (EAG) in histocompatible SC chickens by immunization with different types of glomerular antigen. The development of EAG was time, but not antigen, dependent. Transfer of mononuclear cells from spleens and kidneys of nephritic animals resulted in EAG in naive recipients. Transferred EAG developed earlier than in immunized donors and was not associated with circulating or bound anti-GBM antibodies. Control recipients did not develop disease from control cells alone, soluble antigen, or antigen plus control cells. The cells which transfe…

Induction of autoimmune thyroiditis in chickens by dietary iodine.

Clinical studies have suggested that excess dietary iodine promotes autoimmune thyroiditis; however, the lack of a suitable animal model has hampered investigation of the phenomenon. In this study, different amounts of potassium iodide were added to the diets of chicken strains known to be genetically susceptible to autoimmune thyroiditis. Administration of iodine during the first 10 weeks of life increased the incidence of the disease, as determined by histology and the measurement of autoantibodies to triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and thyroglobulin. Further support for the relation between io

Antipodal central effects of apomorphine and dopamine in chickens.

Dopamine, infused into the hypothalamus or injected into the 3rd cerebral ventricle of chickens pretreated with mebanazine, induced behavioural and electrocortical sleep, suppressed motor activity and lowered body temperature and CO2 elimination, effects prevented by phenoxybenzamine but not spiperone. The hypothermic effects of dopamine were intensified by testing chicks below thermoneutrality. Ampomorphine, infused into the hypothalamus, injected into the 3rd cerebral ventricle or given intravenously, evoked behavioural and electrocortical arousal in the intact chicken and in the encéphale i…

The immunization of broiler chickens against type C botulism.

Broiler chickens were inoculated with different amounts of a Clostridium botulinum type C toxoid at 1 or 14 or both 1 and 14 days of age. Immunity was assessed following challenge with type C botulism toxin at 3, 6, and 8 weeks of age. Protection induced by toxoid injection was affected more by time and number of inoculations than by the amount of toxoid administered. Single toxoid injections at one day of age furnished poor protection, whereas groups injected at 14 days of age were well protected at 6 and 8 weeks of age but not at 3 weeks of age. Variable results were observed in groups inocu…

Immune complexes in tissues of obese strain (OS) chickens.

Obese strain (OS) chickens develop spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT) comparable in many aspects to human Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In a chronologic study on chickens of the Obese strain with B1B1 and B4B4 genotypes, immune and electron dense deposits suggesting immune complexes (IC) were found in the basal lamina of thyroid follicles (BLTF) as early as the time of hatching. The incidence of IC deposition in BLTF increased with age. In some of the chickens studied, thyroglobulin could also be demonstrated in the immune deposits. In addition, IC were also detected in the glomerular basemen…

An outbreak of type C botulism in broiler chickens.

An outbreak of type C botulism involving three-week-old broiler chickens on deep litter is described. No direct source of toxin was found. Cl botulinum type C was distributed widely in the litter, and several thousand per gram were demonstrated both in the litter and in the intestinal contents of chicken.

Abnormal water balance in a mutant strain of chickens.

Polydipsia and polyuria are pronounced in chickens of a selected strain and this diabetes insipidus is inherited. The kidneys of such birds are capable of an antidiuretic response when lysine vasopressin or arginine vasotocin is injected. Osmotic pressure and sodium concentration of the plasmas of normal and mutant chickens are identical. Chicks predicted to have diabetes insipidus on the basis of parental pedigree are polydipsic.
