This population-based study (the largest on this issue conducted in Southern Europe) has examined mortality among the parents of 2622 children diagnosed with cancer in Piedmont during 1967-1994. The article presents comprehensive medical statistical analysis of indicators and causes of mortality of children population of the Russian Federation in 2017-2021. It is emphasized that in Russia, in conditions of extremely unfavorable demographic situation, the hyper actual task is to preserve life of every child. It is demonstrated that crucial role in mortality of children population is played by not only infant mortality and mortality of children aged 1-4 years, but also by mortality of children of older ages. A nationwide survey, conducted in 1992-93 by the Control of Diarrhoeal Disease Programme, Government of Bangladesh, made national estimates of levels and causes of child mortality. A gradual downward trend in infant and child mortality was observed from the mid 1980s. Current mortality rates among infants and children below 5 years were estimated to be around 100 and 150 per 1,000 live births respectively. More than a quarter of deaths in children below 5 years were found to be associated with diarrhoea. Acute respiratory tract infections were also shown to be a major killer of young children.

Liver disease increases surgical risk. Thus, in patients with cirrhosis, the mortality after abdominal or heart surgery is 50-75% in Child-Pugh C, 20-30% in B and near normal in Child-Pugh A. Stable autoimmune hepatobiliary disease and steatosis without inflammation do not increase surgical risk, but the mortality after major abdominal surgery is increased in patients with fulminant hepatic failure (>90%), alcoholic hepatitis (50%) and acute viral hepatitis (10-15%).

Recent reductions in UK aid have demonstrably harmed child health in low-income and middle-income countries. Increased child morbidity and mortality are directly linked to funding cuts impacting vaccination programmes, maternal and child health services and nutritional interventions, exacerbating the health crisis. This article analyses these impacts, criticises systemic flaws in the aid architecture, particularly the impact of the abolition of Department for International Development and advocates for a decolonised, localised and accountable aid system prioritising child health.
