Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Challenges: Caregiver Familiarity with Clinical Services.

Although children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) more often experience mental health concerns, they do not always receive mental health services. This study examined the barrier of caregiver familiarity with services. Analyzing a statewide survey of 137 caregivers of children with IDD and mental health concerns, high percentages (35%-60%) were unfamiliar with common school-based child, community-based child, and (community-based) family mental health services. Especially concerning family services (e.g., family therapy, behavioral parent training, caregiver therapy), ca

"Strada Facendo" a Series of Group Meetings with Parents of Children and Youths with Disabilities.

The article describes the psychological support offered to parents of disabled children/youths through the structuring of mutual self-help meetings. The therapeutic approach, which is based on the principles of the Family Centered Care (FCC), has an experiential character. These meetings are especially important as they took place after a long period of forced distancing, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We can see how this type of path fully responds to the needs of these parents and how it can be strategic for strengthening their capacity for resilience in the daily struggle for the quality of

Stresses and coping strategies of Chinese families with children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Data from 368 families of children with autism and other developmental disabilities in the People's Republic of China were gathered to understand the stresses that families experience and the coping strategies they employ. Chinese families of children with developmental disabilities perceived high levels of stress related to pessimism, child characteristics, and parent and family problems. Regarding coping strategies, acceptance, active coping, positive reinterpretation and growth, suppression of competing activities, and planning were the most frequently employed coping strategies. Parents of

Delivering home-based case management to families with children with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

To meet the needs of individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD) and their families living in urban setting, a noncenter-based model of case management was implemented. In contrast to traditional case management in which families and consumers come to the case manager and most service coordination is done by telephone or in meetings at the case manager/social worker's worksite, the case manager in a noncenter-based model is mobile and able to meet the consumer and family in their domains. In this model, case management is provided in conjunction with in-home resi

Event-related potentials to pitch and rise time change in children with reading disabilities and typically reading children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether children with reading disabilities (RD) process rise time and pitch changes differently to control children as a function of the interval between two tones. METHODS: Children participated in passive oddball event-related potential (ERP) measurements using paired stimuli. Mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a and late discriminative negativity (LDN) responses to rise time and pitch changes were examined. RESULTS: Control children produced larger responses than children with RD to pitch change in the P3a component but only when th

A profile of children with disabilities receiving SSI: highlights from the National Survey of SSI Children and Families.

This article provides a nationally representative profile of noninstitutionalized children 0 to 17 years of age who were receiving support from the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program because of a disability. To assess the role of the SSI program in providing assistance to low-income children with disabilities and their families, it is important to obtain detailed information on demographic characteristics, income and assets, health and disabilities, and health care utilization. Yet administrative records of the Social Security Administration do not contain many of the relevant data ite

Physical Literacy and Physical Activity of Young Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Background: Developing physical literacy in children with developmental disabilities (DDs) is essential to fostering their participation in physical activity. According to the Canadian Framework, physical literacy encompasses multiple interrelated components (behavioral, physical, affective, and cognitive). Such engagement provides numerous benefits, including reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as improved functional and cognitive health. However, children with DD appear to be less active than those without such conditions. Since individuals who are active during childhood and

Ethical reflections on the use of the category "children with disabilities" in quantitative research.

Quantitative research plays a vital role in informing public health policies concerning children with disabilities. However, the categorisation of children as 'disabled' in statistical analyses raises complex ethical questions. This perspective article offers a conceptual and normative reflection on the ethical implications of such categorisation, drawing on the frameworks of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. It argues that while categorisation may be necessary for policy development and resource allocation, it can also perpetuate stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion-parti

Latent Neurocognitive Mechanisms Underlying Quantity Discrimination in Children with and without Mathematical Learning Disabilities.

Mathematical learning disabilities (MLD) affect up to 14% of school-age children, yet the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain elusive. We developed drift diffusion model with dynamic performance monitoring (DDM-DPM), an innovative cognitive model that captures both external and internal sources of structural variability in task performance. Combining DDM-DPM with functional brain imaging, we examined symbolic and nonsymbolic quantity discrimination in female and male children with MLD and typically developing children matched on age, gender, and IQ. Children with MLD showed format-depe

The Socio-Ecological Factors of Physical Activity Participation in Preschool-Aged Children with Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: To effectively promote physical activity (PA) participation in preschool-aged children with disabilities (PACD), a comprehensive understanding of the associated factors is necessary. Consequently, this study aims to examine the factors influencing PA participation in PACD using the socio-ecological model. METHODS: The Disability Status Survey 2020 in South Korea has been used for the current study. PACD aged below five years were selected, resulting in 5825 children. Variables were selected across each level of the socio-ecological model: (1) intrapersonal level (child's sex, chro

Early Intervention for Children With Developmental Disabilities and Their Families via Telehealth: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention during the first 3 years of life is crucial for children with developmental disabilities to optimize developmental outcomes. However, access to such services is often limited by geographical distance and resource constraints. Telehealth can be part of a solution for overcoming these barriers, enabling the delivery of early intervention services. However, a comprehensive understanding of the efficacy and implementation of telehealth in early interventions remains elusive, particularly for children aged 0-3 years. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesi

Stress, resilience, and emotional well-being in children and adolescents with specific learning disabilities.

This article reviews the prevalence of stress and explores resilience factors in children and adolescents with specific learning disabilities (SLDs). We show that the increased stress and emotional challenges faced by this group are likely due to societal pressures and stigma. Recent findings on neuroendocrine changes in this population are discussed, suggesting a predisposition to psychiatric disorders. This review advocates for a societal shift towards the neurodiversity paradigm, which recognizes SLDs as natural variations in brain function, emphasizing individual strengths and promoting a
