Infection with Chlamydia trachomatis in female college students.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from genital specimens from 21 (4.9%) of 431 female college students. Antibody to C. trachomatis was found in the genital secretions of 52 (11.9%) of 437 women. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed race, number of sexual partners, and use of barrier methods of contraception to be predictive of infection with C. trachomatis. Logistic regression analysis found race, number of sexual partners, use of barrier methods of contraception, and presence of cervical erythema to be predictive of local chlamydial antibody. White participants were infected less oft

Maternal and infantile infection with Chlamydia in a Swedish population.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 2.4% of 1 328 puerperal women. The frequency was highest in the age group below 20 years and thereafter decreased with increasing age. Chlamydial conjunctivitis was confirmed in 0.4% of the infants. Two additional cases of conjunctivitis occurred among the exposed infants but chlamydia cultures were not obtained. In a separate ophthalmological material of neonatal conjunctivitis a third of the cases developing within the first month of life was associated with chlamydia. The early and sharp incidence peak for chlamydial conjunctivitis suggested that tran

Pneumonia associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection in an infant.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the epipharynx of a 10-week-old baby girl taken ill with pneumonia but without signs of conjunctivitis. The infant developed specific antibodies to the organism. The course of the pneumonia was protracted, with cough and tachypnea. The baby, who was afebrile, improved on antibiotic therapy but pulmonary infiltrates persisted for several months. To our knowledge, this is the first case of pneumonia in an infant associated with C. trachomatis infection reported elsewhere than North America.

IL-17 and Th17 Cells in Chlamydiae Infection.

Chlamydia is a genus of intracellular parasitic microorganisms with a unique developmental cycle that is widely distributed and can cause various human and animal diseases. T helper 17 (Th17) cells are a distinct subpopulation of Th cells with a unique transcriptional profile (STAT3, RORγt and RORα), a pattern of cytokine production (IL-17 family, IL-21, IL-22) and specific cytokines required for differentiation (IL-6, TGF-β, IL-21 and IL-23). Results from mouse models of infection and human epidemiologic studies indicate that Th17 cells may be vital in modulating innate and adaptive immune re

Associations Between Chlamydia trachomatis Infection and Depression.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the associations between Chlamydia trachomatis and depression in subjects with and without urogenital symptoms, in males and females, and across different severities of depression. METHODS: We reviewed electronic medical records from the University of Louisville Campus Health Services. Data on mood, C. trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection statuses, symptoms, age, sex, and the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs were analyzed. RESULTS: Across the entire study cohort (n = 839), C. trachomatis infection was associated with an increased li

Autophagy: the misty lands of Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Chlamydia are Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens that infect eukaryotic cells and reside within a host-derived vacuole known as the inclusion. To facilitate intracellular replication, these bacteria must engage in host-pathogen interactions to obtain nutrients and membranes required for the growth of the inclusion, thereby sustaining prolonged bacterial colonization. Autophagy is a highly conserved process that delivers cytoplasmic substrates to the lysosome for degradation. Pathogens have developed strategies to manipulate and/or exploit autophagy to promote their repli

Insights Into Host Cell Cytokines in Chlamydia Infection.

Chlamydial infection causes a number of clinically relevant diseases and induces significant morbidity in humans. Immune and inflammatory responses contribute to both the clearance of Chlamydia infection and pathology in host tissues. Chlamydia infection stimulates host cells to produce a large number of cytokines that trigger and regulate host immune responses against Chlamydia. However, inappropriate responses can occur with excessive production of cytokines, resulting in overreactive inflammatory responses and alterations in host or Chlamydia metabolism. As a result, Chlamydia persists and

Fatal Chlamydia psittaci infection in a domestic kitten.

Chlamydia psittaci has not been reported to cause disease in domestic cats, to our knowledge. In contrast, C. felis infection is common in domestic cats and typically results in conjunctivitis, upper respiratory tract infection, and less frequently pneumonia. Herein, we report the pathologic findings and diagnostic features of a fatal case of psittacosis in a 7-wk-old domestic kitten. The animal was 1 of a litter of 5 that, together with the queen, were yielded to a pet rescue center in Wyoming. Over a period of ~3 wk, the kittens and queen became sick, thin, and icteric prior to death, despit

Assessment of Chlamydia suis Infection in Pig Farmers.

Chlamydia suis infections are endemic in domestic pigs in Europe and can lead to conjunctivitis, pneumonia, enteritis and reproductive failure. Currently, the knowledge on the zoonotic potential of C. suis is limited. Moreover, the last decades, porcine tetracycline resistant C. suis strains have been isolated, which interfere with treatment of chlamydial infections. In this study, the presence of C. suis was examined on nine Belgian pig farms, using Chlamydia culture and a C. suis specific real-time PCR in both pigs and farmers. In addition to diagnosis for C. suis, the farmers' samples were

Effects of vaginal lactobacilli in Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Increasing evidence indicates that abnormal vaginal flora lacking lactobacilli facilitates the acquisition of several sexually transmitted diseases including Chlamydia trachomatis. C. trachomatis, the most common bacterial agent of genital infections worldwide, can progress from the lower to upper reproductive tract and induce severe sequelae. The ability of C. trachomatis to develop into a persistent form has been suggested as key pathogenetic mechanism underlying chronic infections and sequelae. The aim of our study was to investigate the C. trachomatis interaction with vaginal microbiota an

[Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the first year of life].

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is the most frequent bacterial sexual infection in women. Pregnant women screening is controversial, with asymptomatic colonization occurring in 2-20%, and 40-70% newborns can be infected. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to characterise C. trachomatis infections in children under 12 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study was carried out from January 1997 to December 2009 (13 years), on Chlamydia infections, diagnosed by immunofluorescence of ocular scraping or serum immunoglobulin M (IgM). Demographic, clinical features, imagi…

Chlamydiae and Mycoplasma infections in pulmonary MALT lymphoma.

Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia psittaci were detected at low frequencies (<20%) among 69 pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas, 30 other lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) and 44 non-LPD. The incidence of individual Chlamydiae was generally higher in MALT lymphoma than non-LPD, although not reaching statistical significance. Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA was not detected.

[Erythema multiforme majus and Chlamydia pneumoniae infection].

BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme majus of infectious origin is an acute eruptive syndrome seen more commonly in young subjects and characterised by an appearance of round target lesions. In most cases, it is associated with infection involving Herpes simplex virus or Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We report an original case of erythema multiforme majus subsequent to infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae. CASE REPORT: An 18 year-old man was hospitalised for management of generalised skin rash comprising lesions in rings, associated with bullous and post-bullous lesions, chiefly in the oral (preventing ea
