The Association Between Dental Implant and Bone Graft Failure and the Levels of Vitamin D and LDL Cholesterol: Retrospective Clinical Study.

Background/Objectives: Dental implant and guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures rely on successful bone healing and remodeling. Systemic metabolic factors, including vitamin D deficiency and elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), may adversely affect osseointegration and bone regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the association between implant/GBR failure and serum vitamin D and LDL-C levels. Methods: A retrospective clinical study was conducted on 40 patients treated with dental implants and/or GBR procedures between 2023 and 2025 in the Eastern Province of Saudi A

Experiences of People Diagnosed with High Levels of LDL Cholesterol and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease: Results from a Multinational Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels are a leading risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a major global cause of illness and death. Patients' qualitative insights about experiences, priorities, and needs are essential for creating more targeted, patient-centered quality improvement interventions. OBJECTIVES: To document the experiences of people with high levels of low-density LDL-C in three countries. METHODS: Qualitative study of 60-min in-depth interviews with 50 adult patients from Australia, Brazil, and the United States. The

Course of the effects of LDL-cholesterol reduction on cardiovascular risk over time: A meta-analysis of 60 randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals with or at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) often receive long-term treatment with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering therapies, but whether the effects of LDL-C reduction remain stable over time is uncertain. This study aimed to establish the course of the effects of LDL-C reduction on cardiovascular risk over time. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of LDL-C lowering therapies were identified through a search in MEDLINE and EMBASE (1966-January 2023). The primary analyses were restricted to statins, ezetimibe, and proprot

Effects of Nutrition Education Program for the Japan Diet on Serum LDL-Cholesterol Concentration in Patients with Dyslipidemia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

AIM: The Japan Diet (JD) recommended by the Japan Atherosclerosis Society based on the traditional Japanese diet is presumably favorable for preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, but few high-quality controlled clinical trials have examined its benefits as compared with other diets. We studied effects of nutrition education for JD intake as compared with partial JD (PJD) intake on serum lipids and inflammatory parameters in subjects with dyslipidemia. METHODS: A randomized parallel controlled clinical trial was conducted on outpatients with dyslipidemia. Participants were random

Predictive value of remnant lipoprotein for cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease after achievement of LDL-cholesterol goals.

OBJECTIVES: Triglycerides-rich lipoproteins are related to residual cardiovascular risk in patients on lipid-lowering treatment who achieve low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals. This study examined the predictive value of remnant lipoprotein levels for cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) with LDL-C levels <100mg/dL on lipid-lowering therapy. METHODS: Serum levels of remnant lipoproteins (remnant-like lipoprotein particles cholesterol; RLP-C) were measured by an immunoseparation method in 560 patients with CAD who had LDL-C levels <100mg/dL on lipi

Increased platelet Fc receptor expression in diabetes is limited to those with type 2 disease and low LDL cholesterol levels.

A potential role for the platelet Fc gammaRIIA immunoreceptor (FcR) in collagen-mediated platelet activation associated with diabetes has recently been described. This study was undertaken to prospectively determine which diabetes patient population (type 1, type 2, or both) was more likely to over express platelet FcR and to determine what clinical or laboratory features characterized this population. One hundred and twenty type 2 diabetes, 135 type 1 diabetes, and 275 control patients participated in this cross-sectional study. Relative FcR expression was assessed by flow cytometry of antibo

Calculated LDL-cholesterol: comparability of the extended Martin/Hopkins, Sampson/NIH, Friedewald and four other equations in South African patients.

AIMS: The reference method for low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) is ultracentrifugation. However, this is unsuitable for routine use and therefore direct LDL-C assays and predictive equations are used. In this study, we compared the Friedewald, extended Martin/Hopkins, Sampson/NIH and four other equations to a direct assay. METHODS: We analysed 44 194 lipid profiles from a mixed South African population. The LDL-C predictive equations were compared with direct LDL-C assay and analysed using non-parametric statistics and error grid analysis. RESULTS: Both the extended Martin/Hopkins

Radiographic Bone Loss and Its Relation to Patient-Specific Risk Factors, LDL Cholesterol, and Vitamin D: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The influence of patient-specific factors such as medical conditions, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) on periodontal diseases is frequently discussed in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to evaluate potential associations between radiographic bone loss (RBL) and patient-specific risk factors, particularly LDL-C and 25OHD levels. Patients from a dental practice, who received full-mouth cone beam CTs (CBCTs) and blood-sampling in the course of implant treatment planning, were included in this st

Relation between baseline LDL-cholesterol and cardiovascular outcomes in high cardiovascular risk hypertensive patients: A post-hoc SPRINT data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients at increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, noticeably hypertensive patients, have multiple CV risk factors which may be treatment targets. LDL-cholesterol is one of such targets. Using the SPRINT cohort, studying the cardiovascular outcomes of hypertensive patients at increased CV risk, this post-hoc study aimed to assess the association of LDL-C with CV outcomes. METHODS: Clinical outcomes were those defined in SPRINT: a composite of various CV outcomes, all-cause mortality, and CV mortality. Association between LDL-C and the primary outcome was analyzed using survival regre

Mitotic spindle defects and chromosome mis-segregation induced by LDL/cholesterol-implications for Niemann-Pick C1, Alzheimer's disease, and atherosclerosis.

Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is a risk factor for both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Atherosclerosis (CVD), suggesting a common lipid-sensitive step in their pathogenesis. Previous results show that AD and CVD also share a cell cycle defect: chromosome instability and up to 30% aneuploidy-in neurons and other cells in AD and in smooth muscle cells in atherosclerotic plaques in CVD. Indeed, specific degeneration of aneuploid neurons accounts for 90% of neuronal loss in AD brain, indicating that aneuploidy underlies AD neurodegeneration. Cell/mouse models of AD develop simil

Consumption of wheat aleurone-rich foods increases fasting plasma betaine and modestly decreases fasting homocysteine and LDL-cholesterol in adults.

There is strong evidence that whole-grain foods protect against heart disease. Although underlying mechanisms and components are unclear, betaine, found at high levels in wheat aleurone, may play a role. We evaluated the effects of a diet high in wheat aleurone on plasma betaine and related measures. In a parallel, single-blinded intervention study, 79 healthy participants (aged 45-65 y, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2)) incorporated either aleurone-rich cereal products (27 g/d aleurone) or control products balanced for fiber and macronutrients into their habitual diets for 4 wk. Fasting blood samples were ta

The thyroid hormone mimetic compound KB2115 lowers plasma LDL cholesterol and stimulates bile acid synthesis without cardiac effects in humans.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a major problem despite the availability of drugs that influence major risk factors. New treatments are needed, and there is growing interest in therapies that may have multiple actions. Thyroid hormone modulates several cardiovascular risk factors and delays atherosclerosis progression in humans. However, use of thyroid hormone is limited by side effects, especially in the heart. To overcome this limitation, pharmacologically selective thyromimetics that mimic metabolic effects of thyroid hormone and bypass side effects are under development. In anima

A six-year longitudinal study identifies a statin-independent association between low LDL-cholesterol and risk of type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Statin therapy has been associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated the relationship between Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) plasma concentrations and incident T2D and evaluated the modifying effect of statin therapy in a large population-based cohort. METHODS: Individuals free of T2D and cardiovascular disease at baseline were followed longitudinally for the development of new-onset T2D. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to evaluate the associations of LDL-C levels and statin therapy with T2D risk. RESULTS: From a population of

New Advances in Rapid Pretreatment for Small Dense LDL Cholesterol Measurement Using Shear Horizontal Surface Acoustic Wave (SH-SAW) Technology.

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the arteries associated with alterations in lipid and other metabolism and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD). LDL consists of several subclasses with different sizes, densities, and physicochemical compositions. Small dense LDL (sd-LDL) is a subclass of LDL. There is growing evidence that sd-LDL-C is associated with CVD risk, metabolic dysregulation, and several pathophysiological processes. In this study, we present a straightforward membrane device filtration method that can be performed with simple laboratory methods to directly d

Elevated serum uric acid increases risks for developing high LDL cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia: A five-year cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: High serum uric acid (SUA) is associated with the dyslipidemia, but whether hyperuricemia predicts an increase in serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is unknown. This study is to evaluate whether an elevated SUA predicts the development of high LDL cholesterol as well as hypertriglyceridemia. METHODS: This is a retrospective 5-year cohort study of 6476 healthy Japanese adults (age, 45.7 ± 10.1 years; 2.243 men) who underwent health examinations at 2004 and were reevaluated in 2009 at St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. Interleukin 28B polymorphisms are the only common genetic variants associated with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in genotype-1 chronic hepatitis C and determine the association between LDL-C and treatment response.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and interleukin 28B (IL28B) polymorphism are associated with sustained viral response (SVR) to peginterferon/ribavirin (pegIFN/RBV) for chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection. IL28B has been linked with LDL-C levels using a candidate gene approach, but it is not known whether other genetic variants are associated with LDL-C, nor how these factors definitively affect SVR. We assessed genetic predictors of serum lipid and triglyceride levels in 1604 patients with genotype 1 (G1) chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by genome-wide association s

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of the effect of konjac glucomannan, a viscous soluble fiber, on LDL cholesterol and the new lipid targets non-HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B.

Background: Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggests the consumption of konjac glucomannan (KJM), a viscous soluble fiber, for improving LDL-cholesterol concentrations. It has also been suggested that the cholesterol-lowering potential of KJM may be greater than that of other fibers. However, trials have been relatively scarce and limited in sample size and duration, and the effect estimates have been inconsistent. The effect of KJM on new lipid targets of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is also unknown. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the
