Phenyl bonded XTerra and XBridge organic/inorganic hybrid stationary phases have been used to separate test solutes and phenol homologues with a pure water mobile phase over a temperature range from 40 to 200 degrees C. The van't Hoff relationships between retention factors and reciprocal temperature were non-linear and could either be interpreted as a systematic change in the properties of the XTerra phenyl column or a marked change in the phase material for the XBridge phenyl column. Weak-acid anions such as borate and cyanide, present problems in chemically suppressed ion chromatography, since the acids are weakly ionised, giving low conductivity and therefore decreased sensitivity. We describe a simple method for measuring sodium azide concentrations in aliquots of blood and other tissues. Aliquots are acidified, converting azide to volatile hydrazoic acid (HN3) which is then trapped in sodium hydroxide. We analyze the resulting aliquots by ion chromatography, using a sodium tetraborate eluent and suppressed conductivity detection. The method is sensitive to at least 100 ng/mL.

The wide possibilities for use of affinity chromatography are demonstrated by two examples: (i) isolation of a single-stranded fragment of the tick-borne encephalitis virus DNA (302-mer) and an oligonucleotide (34 bases) from reaction mixtures and (ii) fractionation of mixtures of diastereoisomers of octathymidylates with modified internucleotide phosphates. All affinity sorbents are constructed by the covalent attachment of the oligonucleotides to solid supports and can be used repeatedly.

Lethal factor from B. anthracis (Vollum 1B strain) has been purified 1130-fold by immunosorbent chromatography using a mouse anti-lethal factor monoclonal antibody Sepharose-4B column. The antibody was covalently attached to CNBr activated Sepharose-4B.
