Marine mammals are ecological sentinels of ocean health. As apex predators, they can bioaccumulate contaminants through aquatic food webs. In this context, this systematic review evaluates the role of minimally invasive biopsy sampling in assessing contaminant exposure across free-ranging populations. Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is the best of four currently used techniques for obtaining results of high accuracy and precision in studies of metal metabolism. TIMS is also the most general technique because it allows measurements of all the metallic elements of interest. The number of Fc and C3 receptors on normal B lymphocytes, isolated from blood, was assessed semiquantitatively by a new method in which the marker cells (pretreated sheep erythrocytes) for Fc and C3 receptors are labelled by 99Tc and 51Cr respectively. Twenty-four patients with dermatitis herpetiformis were investigated for splenic atrophy by splenic scan and clearance of (51)Cr-labelled heat-damaged red blood cells. Eight of them had definite splenic atrophy. The average splenic cross-sectional area of the remaining 16 with normal clearance times was substantially smaller than normal, suggesting some degree of splenic atrophy. No relationship of splenic hypofunction to intestinal biopsy findings, folate status, reticulin antibody, or treatment with a gluten-free diet or dapsone was evident.

With radioactive chromium, platelet kinetic studies were carried out in four patients with onyalai, a form of thrombocytopenic purpura occurring in the African Negro. Results were compared with those of White patients suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. In the onyalai patients platelet life-span was considerably reduced, and this was associated with a definite rise in radioactivity over the spleen in three of the four cases. Platelet survival has been measured in 16 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Of this group, three patients had a normal result and surface counting did not show high splenic uptake. The clinical features of these patients are described. These patients have remained well for several years without treatment.

The present study defines the early response of normal rabbits to the intravenous injection of a single, sublethal dose of endotoxin. Twenty-nine patients were given an intraperitoneal transfusion of blood. The procedure was found to be free of serious complications. Study of the absorption of an (51)Cr-labelled cells from the peritoneum in 14 patients showed that between 35 and 100% of the blood was absorbed intact in 6 to 10 days. Intraperitoneal transfusion may be indicated as an alternative or as an addition to exchange transfusion in severe hookworm anaemia.
