A neoplasm of the ciliary body extending from the equator to the iris and the anterior chamber was observed in an 18-year old girl. Because the visual acuity was lost and the clinical diagnosis was uncertain the eye was enucleated. Both optic and electron microscopic investigations allowed the diagnosis of the mesectodermal type of leiomyoma of the ciliary body.

In a retrospective study of choroidal and ciliary body malignant melanomas in black patients, we found that the death rates due to metastatic melanoma after enucleation were equivalent for 39 blacks and 3,339 whites. When compared with a control group of whites, it was found that blacks were more likely to have secondary glaucoma and inflammation prior to enucleation. Choroidal melanoma with ciliary body involvement is rare, especially in young adults and Asians. Here, we report the case of a young, healthy Chinese woman who complained of decreased vision in the left eye for one week. Her ocular examination and imaging were suggestive of choroidal melanoma involving the ciliary body. The patient underwent enucleation of the left eye. Close monitoring was needed, as the involvement of the ciliary body in choroidal melanoma is associated with a high risk of metastasis.

PURPOSE: To report two cases of mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body presenting as anterior staphyloma.
METHODS: Two case reports with cytopathologic correlation.
RESULTS: First patient (15-year-old boy) presented with a nodular lesion in the sclera. Second patient (31-year-old woman) was found to have a brown ciliary body mass. Growth of the lesion and extrascleral extension was noticed after several years of follow-up. Uveal metastases are the most common intraocular malignancies. The choroid is the most common site for uveal involvement and metastases to the ciliary body and iris are much less common. We describe for the first time a patient with a metastatic tumor of the ciliary body and the iris originating from a squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx and demonstrate the clinical and histopathological characteristics.
