Clay minerals alleviate lead contamination induced by soil speciation and oat translocation in neutral and saline soils.

Lead (Pb) contamination in agricultural soils poses a critical environmental challenge, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. Clay minerals are widely employed in soil remediation owing to their natural abundance and low cost. Nevertheless, their effectiveness is highly dependent on soil pH conditions. This study evaluated the efficacy of three clay minerals (palygorskite (Pa), sepiolite (Sep), bentonite (Be)) in remediating Pb-contaminated soils under neutral and saline conditions. The addition of clay minerals reduced total Pb by 12-26% in neutral soils, compared…

Efficient removal of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms through chitosan-clay flocculation: Effects of dosage and application procedure.

Cyanobacterial harmful algae blooms (cyanoHABs) are increasingly common in freshwater around the world, impairing freshwater ecosystems as well as access to water used for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and industry. A combined coagulant-clay flocculation strategy is a promising method to remove harmful algal cells, yet the optimally efficient application protocol and dosage remain unclear, making cost estimation difficult. Here we investigate how (1) the application procedure and (2) the relative dosages of clay and chitosan affect the removal efficiency of M. aeruginosa, a representative fr…

Mechanisms of clay mineral-induced targeted deposition and synergistic CO2 sequestration potential in the CCUS-EOR process.

BACKGROUND: Strongly water-sensitive reservoirs with high clay content face challenges in conventional development due to clay swelling and impeded seepage. CO2 injection shows potential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon sequestration; however, the role of clay minerals in regulating CO2-induced asphaltene deposition and sequestration remains unclear. METHODOLOGY: We conducted experiments on clay-oil interactions, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), measurements of crude oil properties, and long core water flooding tests to evaluate deposition, reservoir damage, and CO2 sequestration. …

Eco-friendly clay reinforced chitosan and polyethylene glycol based nanocomposites for targeted dye removal in wastewater treatment.

The solvent casting technique was applied to synthesize silane crosslinked, sepiolite reinforced chitosan/polyethene glycol novel nanocomposites. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) shows high compatibility between sepiolite and polymer matrix. The particle size of sepiolite, ranging between 90 and 100 nm, confirms the formation of nanocomposites. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) shows the purity of mixing components. However, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results illustrate the Si-O-Si stretching band at 1070 cm-1 confirms the crosslinking reaction. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analys

A novel concept for estimating the contaminant mass discharge of chlorinated ethenes emanating from clay till sites.

Interest in using contaminant mass discharge (CMD) for risk assessment of contaminated sites has increased over the years, as it accounts for the contaminant mass that is moving and posing a risk to water resources and receptors. The most common investigation of CMD involves a transect of multilevel wells; however, this is an expensive undertaking, and it is difficult to place it in the right position in a plume. Additionally, infrastructure at the site needs to be considered. To derive an initial CMD estimate at a contaminated site and to allow for the prioritization of further investigations

Effect of Coexisting Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides on Cr(VI) Reduction by Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals.

Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals are important electron sources for Cr(VI) reduction in subsurface environments. However, it is not clear how iron (oxyhydr)oxides impact Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II)-bearing clays as the two minerals can coexist in soil and sediment aggregates. This study investigated Cr(VI) reduction in the mixed suspensions of reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and ferrihydrite (Fe(II)/Cr(VI) = 3:1). When the mineral premixing time increased from 0 to 72 h, Cr(VI) reduction was accelerated prominently in the initial stage, while Cr(VI) sorption was inhibited drastically. Mineral pre…

Clay eating attenuates lithium-based taste aversion learning in rats: A remedial effect of kaolin on nausea.

Kaolin clay eating has been considered as a marker of nausea in rats, because a variety of treatments, which evoke nausea in humans, generate consumption of kaolin clay in rats. The present study with two experiments replicated kaolin clay ingestion induced by an injection of emetic lithium chloride (LiCl). The LiCl injection, however, did not generate eating of wooden objects in rats. The present study also provides a new finding that consumption of kaolin clay alleviates rats' taste aversion learning caused by an LiCl injection. This finding is congruent with the contention that consumption …

Enhancement of phosphorus sorption onto light expanded clay aggregates by means of aluminum and iron oxide coatings.

Phosphorus (P) loading from non-point or point sources increases the eutrophication risk of natural waters. The functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs) used as natural water treatment systems can be improved by means of additional materials adsorbing soluble P. In this study, light expanded clay aggregates (LECA) and LECA coated with aluminum (Al) oxide (Al-LECA) or iron (Fe) oxide (Fe-LECA) were tested for their efficiency as P sorbents in the pH range 3-8. The oxide coatings duplicated the actual sorption capacity calculated from the sorption isotherms at the P concentration in the equilib…

Synergistic catalysis and confinement in clay MMT-based Fe3O4/C composite for ultra-stable Lithium-sulfur batteries.

With the rising demand for high-energy-density storage, traditional lithium-ion batteries face limitations in meeting future performance requirements. Lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs), renowned for their high theoretical energy density and low cost, have emerged as a promising next-generation energy storage system. However, their commercialization is severely hindered by the shuttle effect, caused by the dissolution and migration of polysulfides (PS). In this context, functionalizing separators with abundant, environmentally benign clay minerals presents a low-cost and sustainable solution. To …

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Synergistic Regulation of Glucose and Clay Minerals on Polyphenol-Maillard Mediated Abiotic Humification.

The synergistic effects of glucose (Glu) concentration and clay mineral type (kaolinite [Kao], montmorillonite [Mon]) on abiotic humification via the polyphenol-Maillard reaction remain poorly understood. To address these scientific challenges, a series of controlled, sterile batch experiments was conducted. Specifically, a glucose concentration gradient (0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.24 mol/L) was established; Kao and Mon were separately introduced as mineral catalysts; and the Maillard reaction was facilitated in the presence of catechol and glycine under strictly abiotic conditions to preclude…

Utilization of Algerian calcined clay in sustainable mortars considering thermal treatment and granulometry effects on mechanical properties.

This study investigates the potential of calcined Algerian clay as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for enhancing the sustainability of cement production by reducing the consumption of clinker and emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂). The research novelty lies in the comprehensive evaluation of fineness effects, the statistical modelling of mechanical performance, and the assessment of the environmental impact. A case study of practical significance is also provided. Clay was thermally activated at 700 °C to achieve near-complete dihydroxylation, ground to fineness levels of 45 µm and …

Divergent Roles of Clay versus Iron (Hydr)oxide Minerals in Preserving Soil Organic Matter during Wildfire Heating.

The interaction between soil minerals and soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in governing carbon release and sequestration in soil, yet understanding their behavior during wildfires remains poorly understood. This study examined the evolution of humic acid (HA, a representative of SOM) under simulated wildfire heating conditions (30-900 °C) in the presence of two representative soil minerals: montmorillonite (Mnt) and ferrihydrite (Fhy). Whereas Fhy accelerated the mineralization of HA, Mnt enhanced its preservation. These disparities stemmed from variations in the surface react

Clay Sculpture-Inspired 3D Printed Microcage Module Using Bioadhesion Assembly for Specific-Shaped Tissue Vascularization and Regeneration.

3D bioprinting techniques have enabled the fabrication of irregular large-sized tissue engineering scaffolds. However, complicated customized designs increase the medical burden. Meanwhile, the integrated printing process hinders the cellular uniform distribution and local angiogenesis. A novel approach is introduced to the construction of sizable tissue engineering grafts by employing hydrogel 3D printing for modular bioadhesion assembly, and a poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)-gelatin-dopamine (PGD) hydrogel, photosensitive and adhesive, enabling fine microcage module fabrication via

Flow and contaminant transport dynamics in clay-amended barriers through flushing experiments and multi-porosity-based modeling.

Clay-amended barriers are widely used to prevent hazardous leachate percolation from landfill to subsurface. The performance of these barriers is mostly evaluated through numerical simulations with limited experimental investigation through leachate flushing experiments. To bridge this gap, contaminant loading and its flushing experiments were carried out to assess the performance of clay-amended composite materials as landfill liners. River sand (Sa), loamy soil (Ns), and alternative waste materials like fly ash (Fa) and flushed silt (Si) were used to prepare the composites. Composites fulfil…
