We have described clostridial sepsis in a child who presented with an abdominal crisis of sickle cell disease. Clostridium paraputrificum should be included in the list of organisms known to cause sepsis in patients with sickle cell anemia.

Anaerobes are recognized rarely as the cause of urinary tract infection. A case is reported in which there were clinical signs of sepsis, positive blood culture for Clostridium perfringens and radiographic demonstration of emphysematous cystitis without any other recognized source of infection.

Outbreaks of botulism involving acid foods are rare. Of the 722 total botulism outbreaks reported from 1899 to 1975, only 34 (4.7%) involved acid foods. A case of Clostridium perfringens sepsis and gas gangrene complicating chemotherapy for gestational choriocarcinoma is reported. The infection was eradicated using antibiotics, surgery, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this unusual but often lethal complication are reviewed.

Two bacterial strains, YHK0403(T) and YHK0508, isolated from soil under a corroded gas pipe line, were revealed as Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic, spore-forming and mesophilic bacteria. BACKGROUND: Clostridium bolteae and Clostridium clostridioforme, previously included in the complex C. clostridioforme in the group Clostridium XIVa, remain difficult to distinguish by phenotypic methods. These bacteria, prevailing in the human intestinal microbiota, are opportunistic pathogens with various drug susceptibility patterns. Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium septicum are the most common causes of clostridial myonecrosis or gas gangrene. Although they mediate a similar disease pathology, they elaborate functionally very different alpha-toxins.
