Mast cell sarcoma with tissue eosinophilia arising in the ascending colon.

Mast cell sarcoma is a rare disease. We report an unusual case of this neoplasm arising in the ascending colon of a 32-year-old Japanese woman who presented with abdominal pain. An ulcerating mass in the colon was resected, along with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Two years after surgery, the neoplasm recurred as left cervical lymphadenopathy and an intra-abdominal mass. Despite predonine and radiation therapy, the disease progressed, and the patient died. The tumor cells had abundant fine granular or clear cytoplasm, and oval, lobulated, or indented nuclei. Numerous mature eosinophils were

Perforated diverticulum of the ascending colon: pre-operative diagnosis by ultrasound.

A case of acute perforation of a diverticulum of the ascending colon is presented. The ultrasound features that helped in making a pre-operative diagnosis are discussed. This rare surgical emergency and the similar clinical entities of perforated caecal or transverse colon diverticula are often clinically misdiagnosed as more common conditions such as acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis or perforated ulcer. Awareness of this entity will help radiologists in making a correct pre-operative diagnosis.

Diaphragm disease of the ascending colon. Association with sustained-release diclofenac.

We describe the clinicopathological features of six patients, two with rheumatoid arthritis and four with osteoarthritis, in whom intake of sustained-release diclofenac for one or more years was associated with ulceration and or stricture of the ascending colon. All were referred for further evaluation of anemia and changes in bowel habits. Three had chronic watery diarrhea, one suffered from progressive constipation and subsequently needed a right hemicolectomy because of complete intestinal obstruction. In five patients, colonoscopy revealed single to multiple semilunar ulcers, predominantly

Isolated ascending colon ulceration in a patient with chronic renal insufficiency.

Chronic renal hemodialysis or transplantation may be accompanied by a myriad of gastrointestinal problems. Ischemic bowel disease, spontaneous perforation diverticulitis, appendicitis, fistulae, and angiodysplasia have all been reported in the literature. Isolated colonic ulcerations have been described as a cause of both massive hemorrhage and spontaneous perforation. The exact predisposing factors are unknown. Ischemia, immunosuppression, and cytomegalovirus may play important roles in pathogenesis. This article describes a case of both hemorrhage and spontaneous colonic perforation accompan

Solitary perforated diverticulum of the ascending colon: report of two cases.

Diverticulosis of the ascending colon is rare. Perforation of a diverticulum is very uncommon and at times it is difficult to differentiate from carcinoma. Two unusual cases of perforated solitary diverticula of the ascending colon are reported, and literature is briefly reviewed.

Necrotizing and giant cell granulomatous phlebitis of caecum and ascending colon.

A distinctive form of necrotizing and granulomatous phlebitis of a segment of large intestine is described in a previously healthy 36-year-old woman who presented with sudden severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea. At operation the caecum and ascending colon were oedematous and inflamed and right hemicolectomy was performed. Microscopically there was striking involvement of veins in all coats of the bowel ranging from recent fibrinoid necrosis of the whole vessel wall in the case of the caecum, to more chronic giant cell granulomas in parts of the vessel wall with partial or complete occlusion of

Comparison of transport mechanisms in isolated ascending and descending rat colon.

The mechanisms of water and ion transport in ascending and descending rat colon were compared using an everted open mucosal sac preparation. Net water flux, measured gravimetrically, was similar in both segments (15.3 plus or minus 1.2 and 13.7 plus or minus 1.3mul h(-1) mg(-1), NS). Net catonic flux J(Na+K),net anionic flux J(Cl-HCO3), and net solute flux Josm were also similar; but the constituents of these flux , namely JNA, JK, and JHCO3, were significantly different. The descending colon absorbed significantly less Na and secreted significantly more HCO3. Only the descending colon absorbe

Location in the ascending colon is a predictor of refractory colonic diverticular hemorrhage after endoscopic clipping.

BACKGROUND: Predictors of refractory colonic diverticular hemorrhage after endoscopic clipping (EC) remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the predictors of uncontrolled bleeding after EC. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Two tertiary referral centers. PATIENTS: Eighty-nine patients with colonic diverticular hemorrhage who underwent EC as a first-line treatment were included. INTERVENTIONS: If bleeding remained uncontrolled after 1 or 2 EC sessions, other interventions (transcatheter arterial embolization, endoscopic band ligation, or surgery) were performed. Patients were divided i

A Case of Ascending Colon Stricture Following Appendicitis with Abscess Formation.

Colonic stricture secondary to appendicitis is exceptionally rare. We report a unique case of ascending colon stricture developing one year after treatment for complicated appendicitis in a patient on long-term hemodialysis. A 68-year-old male with a 26-year history of hemodialysis underwent percutaneous drainage for appendicitis with abscess formation, followed by an interval laparoscopic appendectomy. One year postoperatively, he developed nausea and vomiting. Colonoscopy revealed a circumferential stricture in the ascending colon without mucosal abnormalities. A contrast enema demonstrated

Ascending colon cancer metastasized to the right testicle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Testicular metastasis from malignant solid tumors is extremely rare. It is usually found by chance during autopsy or pathological examination of testicular specimens. Therefore, we consider it necessary to report our patient's case of testicular metastasis from colon cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 61-year-old Han Chinese male patient who presented to our clinic with progressive painless swelling of the right testicle for 2 years. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography scans showed increased 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose metabolism in the right testicle, possibly owing t

[Case of Minocycline-Induced Thrombocytopenia during Chemotherapy for Ascending Colon Cancer].

A 61-year-old woman underwent an open right hemicolectomy for perforated ascending colon cancer. Later, the patient underwent R2 surgery for duodenal invasion. Chemotherapy was initiated with mFOLFOX6 and panitumumab post-surgery. Subsequently, oral minocycline was administered for the acne-like rash caused by panitumumab 19 days after the first treatment course. The patient showed a significant decrease in platelet count to 2.3×104/μL 18 days after oral medication initiation. However, platelet count improved to 10.6×104/wL 1 week after stopping minocycline. The timing of the decrease in plate

Synchronous isolated gastric metastases from ascending colon carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastric metastases (GMs) are rare and often accompanied with synchronous metastases of other organs. Synchronous isolated GMs from ascending colon carcinoma are uncommon and rarely studied. GMs may be confused with primary gastric tumors. METHODS: A 45-year-old man presented to our hospital with abdominal distensionand anal pendant expansion. The abdominal physical examination was negative. The positive fecal occult blood test and the negative tumor marker were obtained. Colonoscopy and gastroduodenoscopy revealed a polypoidal lesion in the ascending colon and a polypoid mass in t

Fecal Scrotal Abscess Secondary to Spontaneous Retroperitoneal Perforation of Ascending Colon.

INTRODUCTION: Fecal abscess or enterocutaneous fistulas of the scrotum are rare and are invariably the result of incarcerated bowel loop in inguinal hernia. Spontaneous perforation of the colon (SPC) having no definite cause is also rare. Much rarer is posterior colonic perforations causing an extensively large retroperitoneal abscess. Similarly, spread of retroperitoneal abscess to the thigh or scrotum has rarely been reported. We report a case of spontaneous posterior perforation of ascending colon resulting in large retroperitoneal abscess eventually causing scrotal abscess, which resolved

[A Case of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Producing Ascending Colon Cancer].

A 59-year-old man with chief complaints of right-sided rib pain and fever was admitted to our hospital. A type 2 tumor in the ascending colon was revealed by total colonoscopy. Computed tomography examination revealed multiple tumors in the liver. The white blood cell count was high as 13,740/μL. Chemotherapy was planned after treatment with antibiotics, but it was not successful. Right colectomy was performed for infection control. mFOLFOX6 therapy was performed, but liver metastases progressed rapidly, and he died on the 39th postoperative day. The immunohistochemistry revealed G-CSF produci

[Polymetastatic highly aggressive Small Cell Undifferentiated Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of Ascending Colon].

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the colon is a rare and very aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. The current case report presents a 53-year-old male with a 6 cm × 10 cm ascending colon carcinoma, causing large intestine obstruction, with simultaneous multiple hepatic metastases and peritoneal carcinomatosis. Surgical resection of the primary tumor was performed, because of the bowel obstruction, to ameliorate the symptoms before the onset of chemotherapy. Histopathology revealed that the tumor was a small-cell undifferentiated NEC. During the post0operative period, the patient presented pu

[A Case of Ascending Colon Cancer with Extensive Abdominal Wall Abscess].

A 51-year-old woman was seen in our hospital because an ascending colon tumor with extensive abdominal wall abscess was detected on computed tomography(CT). On the same day, we performed open drainage and laparoscopic assisted ileocolostomy. Postoperative day 35, we performed right hemicolectomy with abdominal wall resection and closure of the colostomy as a radical surgery. After surgery, we started(negative pressure wound therapy: NPWT)to the surgical wound site; hence, the abdominal wall defect could be healed without a musculocutaneous flap. Laparoscopic assisted open drainage, a two-stage
