The role of infections in the emergence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs): Compelling needs for novel strategies in the developing world.

The emergence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) follows multiple aetiological pathways requiring recognition for effective control and prevention. Infections are proving to be conventional, emerging and re-emerging aetiological factors for many NCDs. This review explores the possible mechanisms by which infections induce NCDs citing examples of studies in Africa and elsewhere where NCDs and infections are proposed or confirmed to be causally linked and also discusses the implications and challenges of these observations for science and medicine. The need to re-evaluate and expand early commu

[Zoonoses in working- and wild animals and their significance in Germany. An overview].

The control of infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans (zoonoses) was recently put on a new basis in the European Union when a new Zoonoses Directive entered into force. Brucellosis, campylobacteriosis, echinococcosis, listeriosis, salmonellosis, trichinosis, and the respective causative agents, tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis, and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli must be included in monitoring. Additional zoonoses and zoonotic agents are to be monitored according to the epidemiological situation. Against this background, the current knowledge on important zoonoses transmi

Protection from epistaxis blood aerosol contamination: a novel use of a surgical facemask.

Epistaxis is one of the most common otorhinolaryngological emergencies. It is also one of the most common emergencies that places medical staff at risk of blood contamination. We report a simple yet extremely effective method in which a standard surgical facemask is worn by the patient, thereby reducing blood aerosol contamination without interfering with effective management.

Mass vaccination: when and why.

With increased demand for smallpox vaccination during the nineteenth century, vaccination days--early mass vaccination campaigns--were conducted over time-limited periods to rapidly and efficiently protect maximum numbers of susceptible persons. Two centuries later, the challenge to rapidly and efficiently protect populations by mass vaccintion continues, despite the strengthening of routine immunization services in many countries through the Expanded Programme on Immunization strategies and GAVI support. Perhaps the most widely accepted reason for mass vaccination is to rapidly increase popul

Surveillance and control of Shigella sonnei infection.

Shigella sonnei infection continues to present a challenge to those responsible for the control of communicable disease. It is readily passed from one person to another by faecal-oral spread, particularly in children. Traditionally, control measures have emphasised hygienic precautions and exclusion of infected individuals from schools and nurseries. The extent to which these measures have been effective appears to be limited. This review of the literature and recent epidemiological data was conducted to identify interventions which contribute to the control of the infection without unjustifia

Impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions on infectious disease patterns in Yunnan Province across the COVID-19 pandemic phases.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered global infectious disease patterns. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)—including lockdowns, travel restrictions, and enhanced hygiene—were widely implemented to control SARS-CoV-2 but also influenced the transmission of other infectious diseases. This study assessed the impact of NPIs on 36 notifiable diseases in Yunnan Province, China, across three phases: the prepandemic period (2014–2019), the pandemic phase (2020–2022), and the postpandemic phase (2023), when most NPIs were lifted. METHODS: We analyzed surveillance data from the Y

Frameworks to support evidence-informed decision-making in public health and infectious disease prevention and control: a scoping review.

BackgroundEvidence-informed public health decision-making (EIDM) is a complex process that must consider multiple factors.AimWe aimed to identify and describe existing frameworks supporting evidence-informed public health decision-making and their application to infectious disease.MethodsWe conducted a scoping review to describe current EIDM framework use in public health. We included decision-making frameworks in public health and examples of their use in infectious diseases. We searched MEDLINE and Health Systems Evidence from inception to December 2022. We also hand searched websites of rel

Assessing the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19 on 64 notifiable infectious diseases in Australia: A Bayesian Structural Time Series model.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined the effect of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in Australia and globally. However, to our knowledge none have sufficiently explored their impact on other infectious diseases with robust time series model. In this study, we aimed to use Bayesian Structural Time Series model (BSTS) to systematically assess the impact of NPIs on 64 National Notifiable Infectious Diseases (NNIDs) by conducting a comprehensive and comparative analysis across eight disease categories within each Australian state and territory,

Modeling the impact of temperature on the dynamics of carrier-dependent infectious diseases with control strategies.

The spread of diseases poses significant threats to human health globally. The dynamic nature of infectious diseases, especially those that also rely on carriers (e.g., house flies) for transmission, requires innovative strategies to control their spread, as environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, etc., affect the rate of growth of the carrier population. This study introduces a mathematical model to assess the effect of increasing global average temperature rise caused by carbon dioxide emissions and chemical control strategies on the dynamics of such diseases. The stability p

Psychosocial strain and coping of Finnish working mothers during the COVID-19 lockdown: a job demand-control approach.

INTRODUCTION: In March 2020 many countries around the world, including Finland, implemented lockdown measures to mitigate the unprecedented impacts of the coronavirus infectious disease (COVID-19) on public health. As a result, school and daycare settings closed indefinitely and working from home became the new normal for a big part of the workforce, which came with increased homeschooling and childcare responsibility for mothers. METHODS: In this article we present the findings from maternal responses to open ended questions on psychosocial well-being, and experiences of combining work, fami

COVID-19 preventive measures coincided with a marked decline in other infectious diseases in Denmark, spring 2020.

We aimed to descriptively analyse the possible impact of the national COVID-19 interventions on the incidence of common infectious diseases in Denmark during spring and summer 2020. This observational study focused on national register data on infections caused by 16 different bacterial and viral pathogens. We included new cases registered between 1 January 2016 and 31 July 2020. The weekly number of new cases were analysed with respect to the COVID-19-related interventions introduced during 2020. We found a marked decrease in infections associated with droplet transmission coinciding with the

TIPICO IX: report of the 9th interactive infectious disease workshop on infectious diseases and vaccines.

The Ninth Interactive Infectious Disease workshop TIPICO was held on November 22-23, 2018, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This 2-day academic experience addressed current and topical issues in the field of infectious diseases and vaccination. Summary findings of the meeting include: cervical cancer elimination will be possible in the future, thanks to the implementation of global vaccination action plans in combination with appropriate screening interventions. The introduction of appropriate immunization programs is key to maintain the success of current effective vaccines such as those aga

Enhancing the role of vaccines in combatting antimicrobial resistance.

Interest in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has grown recently but little effort has been made to consider how existing and new vaccines could impact on AMR. A 2017 Chatham House meeting considered the role of vaccines and how to demonstrate their value through their impact on AMR. Ways existing vaccines have reduced antibiotic prescribing and the prevalence of some resistant organisms were reviewed. Other new vaccines could have a similar impact. In gonorrhoea, where complete resistance has developed, vaccine may be the best option. Valuing the impact of vaccines on AMR was challeng

Plant-Derived Monoclonal Antibodies for Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Disease.

Numerous monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that recognize and neutralize infectious pathogens have been isolated and developed over the years. The fact that infectious diseases can involve large populations of infected individuals is an important factor that has motivated the search for both cost-effective and scalable methods of antibody production. The current technologies for production of antibodies in plants allow for very rapid expression and evaluation that can also be readily scaled for multikilogram production runs. In addition, recent progress in manipulating glycosylation in plant produc

Resurgence of West Nile neurologic disease in the United States in 2012: what happened? What needs to be done?

The resurgence in cases of neurologic disease caused by West Nile virus (WNV) in the United States in 2012 came as a surprise to the general public and to many non-arbovirus researchers. Following the introduction of WNV into the US in 1999, the number of human infections rose dramatically, peaking in 2002-03. However, cases declined from 2008-11, and it was unclear if the virus would continue to have a low-level endemic transmission pattern with occasional outbreaks, like the related flavivirus, Saint Louis encephalitis virus, or a more active pattern with annual outbreaks, including occasion

How to (or not to) integrate vertical programmes for the control of major neglected tropical diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Combining the delivery of multiple health interventions has the potential to minimize costs and expand intervention coverage. Integration of mass drug administration is therefore being encouraged for delivery of preventive chemotherapy (PCT) to control onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and trachoma in sub-Saharan Africa, as there is considerable geographical overlap of these neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). With only a handful of countries having embarked on integrated NTD control, experience on how to develop and implement an efficient i

[Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases--a challenge for public health].

We have recently seen a worldwide explosion of infectious diseases: emerging diseases like the HIV/AIDS pandemic, or old diseases like cholera, tuberculosis, diphteria, plague, yellow fever, dengue, or malaria. These reemerging diseases are on the surge because of multiple factors: environmental changes, transformation of ecosystems, ongoing socioeconomic degradation and deterioration of public health systems in many countries. The increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics or virologic resistance to antiviral drugs are becoming a serious problem today. This global danger needs a global re
