Assessing Communication in Children with Complex Communication Needs: Development of the Italian IVCAA Structured Interview.

Background: Individuals with complex communication needs (CCNs) require comprehensive communication profiles to guide effective interventions, yet the clinical literature offers limited tools to support this process. To address this gap, the "Italian CP & Language Network"-a multidisciplinary group of speech-language pathologists, psychologists, and child neuropsychiatrists-developed a novel, comprehensive clinical instrument specifically designed to evaluate the communication skills of children and adolescents with CCNs. Methods: The development process was informed by an initial preliminary

The feasibility of the COMMUNICATE toolkit to support the communication of physical activity messages with adolescents in Irish schools.

The Active School Flag (ASF) is a peer-led whole-of-school physical activity (PA) programme in Irish secondary schools. This study assessed the feasibility of implementing the COMMUNICATE toolkit for ASF programme implementers (peer leaders and coordinating teachers). A pre-post, quasi-experimental, mixed-methods design was employed and guided by the Orsmond and Cohn feasibility objectives. Online surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups were collected from six secondary schools (40% recruitment rate), 170 peer leaders, and three coordinating teachers. Survey data were analysed us

Implementation Experiences From the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities Initiative.

The $340 million Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) initiative leveraged community health workers (CHWs) to address immediate pandemic needs and build community resilience. A comprehensive web-based survey was administered to 67 CCR recipients (94% response rate) in the United States to explore implementation experiences. Experience with the target population and established partnerships were key facilitators; challenges included CHW recruitment and adapting to pandemic shifts. CCR demonstrated CHWs' vital role in strengthening public health emergency r

Community Care in Action: Scaling Doula Support Through a Health Department-Community Partnership.

INTRODUCTION: Doula support is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to address racial inequities in maternal health. The New York City Health Department launched the Citywide Doula Initiative (CDI) in March 2022 to expand access to free, community-based doula support in disinvested neighborhoods. METHODS: To evaluate the program's first year of implementation, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 clients, doulas, doula-organization staff, and Health Department staff between November 2022 and April 2023. We coded interview notes using template analysis (a thematic analysi

Community case study: Community-driven strategies to build a socially inclusive rural county.

Mitchell County, Kansas is a rural county with a strong sense of local identity and a population committed to community well-being. Like many rural areas, however, residents experience structural challenges to social connection, including geographic isolation, demographic shifts, and limited access to inclusive services. These issues were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a federally funded initiative, Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE), Mitchell County stakeholders developed community-driven strategies to address social isolation, with special consideration on

Advertising Appeals in Health Communication: A Netnographic Exploration within a Facebook Community of Vitiligo Patients.

Individuals with stigmatized health conditions like vitiligo often turn to online communities for support, where they encounter numerous health advertisements. This study examines how vitiligo patients perceive the emotional and rational appeals within these ads. We employed a netnographic methodology within a large, public Facebook support group for vitiligo (N ≈ 28,000), combining in-depth interviews and participant observation to analyze patient interactions. Our analysis is guided by an integrated framework of social cognitive theory (SCT) and stigma management communication (SMC) theory,

Communal Load Sharing of Miscarriage Experiences: Thematic Analysis of Social Media Community Support.

BACKGROUND: Miscarriage is a common experience, affecting 15% of recognized pregnancies, but societal ignorance and taboos often downplay the mental distress and personal impact following a miscarriage. Emerging stories on social media in which women express their miscarriage grief are breaking such taboos. Research in the area of online health communities is increasingly focused on studying how people share their health experiences on social media. However, a clear understanding on the social support involved in this type of sharing of health experiences is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study exp

What is Functional Communication? A Theoretical Framework for Real-World Communication Applied to Aphasia Rehabilitation.

Aphasia is an impairment of language caused by acquired brain damage such as stroke or traumatic brain injury, that affects a person's ability to communicate effectively. The aim of rehabilitation in aphasia is to improve everyday communication, improving an individual's ability to function in their day-to-day life. For that reason, a thorough understanding of naturalistic communication and its underlying mechanisms is imperative. The field of aphasiology currently lacks an agreed, comprehensive, theoretically founded definition of communication. Instead, multiple disparate interpretations of

Analysis of influencing factors of community-acquired pneumonia with deep venous thrombosis in elderly communities.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the common infectious diseases that threaten human health, venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), is a global health care problem. Acute infection and age ≥70 years are important risk factors for VTE in internal medicine inpatients. There is increasing evidence that acute infectious diseases caused by bacterial and viral infections can induce coagulation, platelet (PLT) activation and inhibit the activity of anticoagulant factors. However, there is no consensus on whether
