A 60-year-old woman with no symptoms was found to have a mass shadow in the left lower lobe of the lung on chest radiography. Open lung biopsy and left lower lobectomy were performed. Histopathological study of the specimen revealed two distinct neoplasms. One tumor was a low grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) of the lung, while the other was an adenocarcinoma. The two neoplasms were admixed to form a composite tumor.

Forty-seven cases of primary well-differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma (WDL) of the lung were studied. Diagnosis was based on histologic identification of a lymphangitic pattern of infiltration and monomorphous (homogenous) cytologic composition. Nineteen cases (40%) had ancillary evidence supportive of a diagnosis of lymphoma including simultaneous or subsequent involvement of other organs, monoclonal immunologic markers, or a monoclonal serum gammopathy. Survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) are recognised to become overweight and this seems to worsen with increasing length of follow up. Increases in body fat appear to be more marked in girls than in boys and in those who have received prophylactic cranial irradiation. Physiological responses to exercise, both at submaximal and maximal levels, are different in ALL survivors compared to controls. Heart rate appears to be increased at low intensity exercise, possibly to maintain adequate cardiac output. Maximal aerobic capacity is reduced, signifying a lower level of physical fitness.

Glycosaminoglycan and core protein components of proteoglycans (PGs) have been studied in three human non-Hodgkin lymphoma xenografts of B cell origin. Lymphomas showed similar GAG content, but different composition of GAG subtypes. This variability was accompanied by an individual capacity to adhere to extracellular matrix elements. The core proteins identified by monoclonal antibodies raised against human cartilage chondroitin sulfate PG were also distinctly expressed and released.
