Extending real-time MRI of the oral cavity using simultaneous multislice and compressed sensing.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a real-time MRI (rtMRI) sequence that can image multiple slices simultaneously and apply them to image the dynamics of the oral cavity. Specifically, we demonstrate the imaging of tongue movement, speech, and swallowing. METHODS: We developed a radial rtMRI sequence with multiband excitation. Two sampling schemes were explored: a golden-angle trajectory and a golden-angle trajectory adapted for simultaneous multislice acceleration. Additionally, we developed a compressed sensing reconstruction pipeline. Phantom and in vivo rtMRI data were acquired on a 3 T system using

SCARF: a biomedical association rule finding webserver.

The analysis of enormous datasets with missing data entries is a standard task in biological and medical data processing. Large-scale, multi-institution clinical studies are the typical examples of such datasets. These sets make possible the search for multi-parametric relations since from the plenty of the data one is likely to find a satisfying number of subjects with the required parameter ensembles. Specifically, finding combinatorial biomarkers for some given condition also needs a very large dataset to analyze. For fast and automatic multi-parametric relation discovery association-rule f

A Novel Method for Tracking Neck Motions Using a Skin-Conformable Wireless Accelerometer: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spine disease is a leading cause of pain and disability. Degenerative conditions of the spine can result in neurologic compression of the cervical spinal cord or nerve roots and may be surgically treated with an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in up to 137,000 people per year in the United States. A common sequelae of ACDF is reduced cervical range of motion (CROM) with patient-based complaints of stiffness and neck pain. Currently, tools for assessment of CROM are manual, subjective, and only intermittently utilized during doctor or physical therapy visit

Optimizing Anatomic Reduction of Vertical Meniscus Tears With All-Inside Meniscus Repair.

The lateral and medial meniscus play vital roles in load distribution across the knee joint and in the prevention of knee osteoarthritis. As such, every effort should be made to save and repair the meniscus when possible, as partial and total meniscectomies have been shown to impair the meniscus' ability to effectively dissipate shock. Recently, an algorithm-coined the "ABCs of meniscal repair"-has emerged as a blueprint for optimizing the success of a meniscal repair. The "ABCs of meniscal repair" refer to anatomic reduction, biologic augmentation, and circumferential compression across the m

The Physics, Information, and Computation of Perennial Learning: Kolmogorov Complexity, Information Distance, and Port-Hamiltonian Thermodynamics.

Real-world autonomous agents learn under nonstationarity, safety constraints, and finite energetic budgets. We develop a framework for perennial learning-agents that continuously refine their models while provably controlling the cost of forgetting-by unifying three classical pillars: Kolmogorov complexity, which equates scientific discovery with algorithmic compression; Landauer's principle, which assigns a minimal thermodynamic cost of kBTln2 per erased bit to every irreversible model update; and port-Hamiltonian (PH) dynamics, whose (J-R)∇H decomposition separates zero-cost reversible infer

[Current international recommendations for pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation: the European guidelines].

This summary of the European guidelines for pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) emphasizes the main changes and encourages health care professionals to keep their pediatric CPR knowledge and skills up to date. Basic and advanced pediatric CPR follow the same algorithm in the 2015 guidelines. The main changes affect the prevention of cardiac arrest and the use of fluids. Fluid expansion should not be used routinely in children with fever in the abuse of signs of shock because too high a volume can worsen prognosis. Rescue breaths should last around 1 second in basic CPR, making pediat

Thyroid diagnosis by thermogram sequence analysis.

A computerised thermal imaging system for thyroid diagnosis was developed by the authors and it was discovered that the rate of changes of temperature, rather than the absolute values, associated with a sequence of thermograms could help the medical doctors to identify clinical disorders. In order to further enhance the diagnostic capabilities and speed, a new method for medical thermogram analysis has been developed that compresses a sequence of thermograms into one thermogram while retaining the important information such as the geometrical patterns of the objects and the rate of temperature

Stabilizing-sensing synergistic geogrid for high-speed railways.

High-speed railway systems demand robust substructure performance and real-time monitoring to ensure operational safety and efficiency. To meet these challenges, we introduce the stabilizing-sensing synergistic geogrid (SMART geogrid), which employs geogrids as soil-stabilizing materials and integrates Fiber Bragg Grating sensors within the geogrid to detect soil variations. Extensive theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies have been conducted on the coupling characteristics between the optical fiber, adhesive, and geogrid in the SMART geogrid. These studies indicate that the SMART ge

Accelerating Atomic Force Microscopy Imaging based on an Optimized Path Planning Method.

Based on compressed sensing, undersampling is a low cost and efficient way to speed up the process of atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. The under-sampled information obtained is important in producing high-quality reconstructed images. Different samples and dynamic measurement show different characteristic of topography, which makes it impossible to acquire acceptable AFM image with same under-sampled scanning pattern. This work aims to propose an unsampling path planning method for effective under-sampled image acquisition. The preprocess is realized by object detection and k-means metho

A Scalable 1024-Channel Ultra-Low-Power Spike Sorting Chip with Event-Driven Detection and Spatial Clustering.

This paper presents a 1024-channel ultra-low-power spike sorting chip featuring event-driven spike detection and spatial clustering for large-scale neural recording. To address power and scalability constraints in brain-computer interfaces, the design integrates a compressive ADC with a two-stage spike detector that significantly reduces memory and processing activity. Spatial features derived from high-density microelectrode array (MEA) enhance cluster separability, enabling robust performance even under neural signal distortion or probe drift, particularly when recordings are obtained using

A Successful Bisphosphonates Monotherapy in Spinal Form of Paediatric Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO)-Case Report.

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a non-infectious inflammatory disorder resulting from the multifocal bone and bone marrow lesions with periodic relapses and remissions and with an uncertain prognosis. Treatment options in CRMO are based on expert opinion and relatively small groups of patients. A nine-year-old female patient with no significant past medical history presented with compression fractures and multifocal bone lesions in the thoracic and lumbar spine, as shown in imaging (CT, MRI). Densitometry revealed a diffuse decrease in bone density. Based on the patient's

Venous leg ulcers: potential algorithms of care.

Management of VLUs can be challenging, depending on wound complexity, and may require the use of several treatment modalities to achieve complete wound closure or significant wound area reduction. This review presents a systematic approach to management of VLUs based on previous literature and the authors' clinical experience, with consideration given to wound size, etiology, and responses to prior treatment. Techniques described include debridement (autolytic, enzymatic, sharp/surgical), compression therapy, physical therapy, medical adjuncts, and cellular- and tissue-based therapy. The algor

Compression Produces a Square-Planar Iron Tetracarbonyl.

Iron carbonyls are known to form 18-electron complexes like Fe(CO)5, Fe2(CO)9, and Fe3(CO)12 having terminal or bridged Fe-CO bonding. Based on genetic algorithm-assisted density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is predicted that at pressures above 2 GPa, iron tetracarbonyl, Fe(CO)4, attains a square-planar geometry with a 16-electron count. Compression overcomes the [Ar]4s23d6 (S = 2) → [Ar]4s03d8 (S = 0) excitation energy to stabilize a closed-shell Fe(CO)4 with a d8-configuration. Strong σ(4CO) → Fe (dx2-y2) bonding along with Fe(dxz, dyz) and Fe(dxy) → π (CO)4* back-bonding assists
