Psychological burden of food allergy.

One fifth of the population report adverse reactions to food. Reasons for these symptoms are heterogeneous, varying from food allergy, food intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome to somatoform or other mental disorders. Literature reveals a large discrepancy between truly diagnosed food allergy and reports of food allergy symptoms by care seekers. In most studies currently available the characterization of patient groups is incomplete, because they did not distinguish between immunologic reactions and other kinds of food reactions. In analysing these adverse reactions, a thorough physical and p

Behavioral conditioning and experimental motion-induced sickness.

Adult male squirrel monkeys were the subjects of experiments conducted to determine whether or not repeated exposures to sickness-inducing horizontal rotation would result in behavioral conditioning of emetic responses. The development of conditioned food aversion and feeding suppression as a consequence of pre- and postrotation eating was quantified. It was concluded that neither instrumental conditioning nor classical conditioning were valid alternative hypotheses for the occurrence of repeated vomiting episodes over a period of ten daily exposures to motion. Conditioned aversion to fresh ba

Olanzapine Attenuates the Morphine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference: The Involvement of the D2-Like Dopamine Receptors.

OBJECTIVE: Opioid use disorder is associated with persistent molecular and cellular changes in the brain, leading to compulsive drug-seeking behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of olanzapine (OLZ), a D2-like dopamine receptor (D2R) antagonist, on morphine dependence using the conditioned place preference (CPP) model. METHODS: Morphine-induced CPP was established by subcutaneous (sc) administration of morphine (5 mg/kg) for three consecutive days. OLZ at doses of 1.5, 3, and 4.5 mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally (ip) during different phases of CPP: acquisition, expressio

Combined effects of reinstatement and spontaneous recovery.

Prior research has examined combined forms of behavioral recurrence, showing that relapse is greater when these forms occur together than when each is studied in isolation. However, this enhancement effect has not yet been explored in the joint expression of two phenomena: reinstatement, defined as the reappearance of extinguished behavior following response-independent or response-dependent exposure to consequences (or consequence-associated cues), and spontaneous recovery, defined as the recurrence of a response after an interval following extinction. The present study evaluated whether dela

Frontal Norepinephrine Represents a Threat Prediction Error Under Uncertainty.

BACKGROUND: To adapt to threats in the environment, animals must predict them and engage in defensive behavior. While the representation of a prediction error signal for reward has been linked to dopamine, a neuromodulatory prediction error for aversive learning has not been identified. METHODS: We measured and manipulated norepinephrine release during threat learning using optogenetics and a novel fluorescent norepinephrine sensor. RESULTS: We found that norepinephrine response to conditioned stimuli reflects aversive memory strength. When delays between auditory stimuli and footshock are i

Danger Changes the Way the Brain Consolidates Neutral Information; and Does So by Interacting with Processes Involved in the Encoding of That Information.

This study examined the effect of danger on consolidation of neutral information in two regions of the rat (male and female) medial temporal lobe: the perirhinal cortex (PRh) and basolateral amygdala complex (BLA). The neutral information was the association that forms between an auditory stimulus and a visual stimulus (labeled S2 and S1) across their pairings in sensory preconditioning. We show that, when the sensory preconditioning session is followed by a shocked context exposure, the danger shifts consolidation of the S2-S1 association from the PRh to the BLA; and does so by interacting wi

The role of tissue-type plasminogen activator system in amphetamine-induced conditional place preference extinction and reinstatement.

Extracellular serine proteases of the plasminogen activator family (tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) may modulate synaptic adhesion and associate with learning behavior. Psychostimulants strongly induce their expression in the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, but cocaine preferentially induces uPA, whereas morphine and amphetamine preferentially induce tPA. tPA-expressing animals displayed enhanced conditional place preference (CPP) for amphetamine compared with uPA-overexpressing animals. Thus, modulation of the plasminogen system in the b

Genetically-based behavioral traits influence the effects of Shuttle Box avoidance overtraining and extinction upon intertrial responding: a study with the Roman rat strains.

In the present study, we evaluated the effects of extended exposure procedures to contextual fear cues as a way of reducing intertrial responses (ITRs), a characteristic stereotyped behavior displayed in 2-way Shuttle Box avoidance overtraining. We used rat strains psychogenetically selected for efficient (Roman high-avoidance; RHA) versus poor 2-way Shuttle Box performance (Roman low-avoidance; RLA), the former being fearless/impulsive relative to the latter. Additionally, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were compared with RHAs to have a measure of the ITRs exhibited by another, non-selected group o

Conditioned taste aversion in vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain).

Brattleboro rats are homozygous for diabetes insipidus (DI), lacking the ability to synthesize vasopressin. Previous studies reported learning deficits in DI rats on passive avoidance tasks using footshock. Other studies, however, could not replicate these results. In two experiments, we studied the learning of DI and control Long Evans (LE) rats in a different avoidance paradigm: conditioned taste aversion (CTA). In the first experiment a mild CTA to saccharin was established gradually using low levels of an illness-inducing agent (lithium chloride). In the second experiment a strong CTA was

An operant reinforcement method of treating depression.

A method of treating depression based on an operant reinforcement perspective was evaluated with 29 depressed persons. The procedure included increased reinforcer utilization, behavioral contrast, overcorrection, reinforcer sampling and stimulus control by positive events. Also, training was given in skills related to the cause of the depression such as communication, job-finding, marital and study skills. A behavioral measure of individual goal attainment was taken in addition to three common subjective measures. Improvement occurred after the first two sessions, increased with successive ses

Estrogen status and psychophysical stress modify temporomandibular joint input to medullary dorsal horn neurons in a lamina-specific manner in female rats.

Estrogen status and psychological stress contribute to the expression of several chronic pain conditions including temporomandibular muscle and joint disorders (TMJD). Sensory neurons that supply the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region terminate in laminae I and V of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Vc/C1-2 region); however, little is known about lamina-specificity and environmental influences on the encoding properties of TMJ brainstem neurons. To test the hypothesis that Vc/C1-2 neurons integrate both interoceptive and exteroceptive signals relevant for TMJ nociception, we recorded TMJ-evoked

Human-operant evaluation of synthesized alternative reinforcement and resurgence.

Basic research suggests that differential reinforcement with synthesized alternative reinforcement (i.e., delivery of two or more qualitatively different reinforcers contingent on a single alternative response) increases resurgence during disruptions to the contingency. We evaluated whether these findings extended to human participants using a gamified computer task within a three-phase resurgence evaluation across three experimental groups. In Phase 1, target responses produced isolated reinforcement across all groups. In Phase 2, target responses were placed on extinction across all groups b

Segregated populations of hippocampal principal CA1 neurons mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear.

Learning processes mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear require activation of several key signaling pathways in the hippocampus. Principal hippocampal CA1 neurons respond to fear conditioning by a coordinated activation of multiple protein kinases and immediate early genes, such as cFos, enabling rapid and lasting consolidation of contextual fear memory. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) additionally acts as a central mediator of fear extinction. It is not known however, whether these molecular events take place in overlapping or nonoverlapping neuronal popula

Trichotillomania: a comprehensive behavioral model.

As our knowledge of chronic hair pulling as neither rare nor benign has increased, so has the need for a comprehensive framework to guide our conceptualization of this disorder for both research and clinical work. Such a model is presented which incorporates (a) the varied antecedents that both cue the impulse to pull and facilitate pulling, (b) the wide array of behaviors involved in the actual pulling, and (c) the full range of consequences of pulling. The cyclical nature of pulling episodes is highlighted.

[Hyperhidrosis. Hypnotherapy of 2 patients with hyperhidrosis].

Two cases of hypnotherapeutic treatment of psychogenic hyperhidrosis are presented. In both cases, organic aetiology could be excluded and conventional medical treatment modalities had no effect. In both cases, it was possible to modulate sweating in the trance state within less than a minute, thus supporting other reported cases of the effect of hypnotically induced modulation of autonomic responses. In the first case the psychological dynamics behind the physiological symptoms seemed unrelated to fundamental emotional and personal problems and relaxation and conditioning techniques in hypnos

Renewal of spatial response distributions in rats.

Operant renewal refers to the relapse of eliminated behavior as a function of context change. Two experiments were performed to assess operant renewal effects in rat subjects with different response location criteria. In both experiments, subjects were trained to respond to a variable-interval schedule on an array of five levers. For Experiment 1, in Context A, only responses on the middle lever were reinforced. For these subjects, response distributions formed a generalization gradient around the middle lever. For Experiment 2, responses on any lever could meet the reinforcement criteria. In
