Eye conditions account for 2-5% of all consultations in general practice.1 One-third of these eye problems (equivalent to around 13-14 cases per 1,000 population per year) are cases of infective conjunctivitis, normally a self-limiting condition.2,3 Traditionally, topical antibacterials have been prescribed for people with acute infective conjunctivitis.4 In 2005, chloramphenicol eye drops became available over the counter (OTC) from UK pharmacies as a treatment for conjunctivitis, and there is evidence that the overall use of chloramphenicol for this indication has increased since then.5 Here

Infectious conjunctivitis of the newborn is caused by a wide variety of microorganisms. The ocular findings may be part of a widespread systemic infection. Clinical presentations are not diagnostic of the cause, and a microbiologic work-up with cytology, cultures, and microbial sensitivities is mandatory. The selection of specific antimicrobial therapy is based on the findings of laboratory studies. Prophylaxis with silver nitrate solution, 1.0% tetracycline, or 0.05% erythromycin ointment is effective for the prevention of gonococcal and chlamydial conjunctivitis in the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted pathogen in adults, which at delivery may be transmitted from mother to child and cause conjunctivitis and pneumonia. In The Netherlands, prenatal chlamydial screening and treatment of pregnant women is not routine practice. The contribution of C. trachomatis to neonatal ophthalmic disease has not been studied in The Netherlands and remains unclear.
METHODS: At the Sophia Children's Hospital and Rotterdam Eye Hospital, 2 cohorts of infants <3 months of age presenting with conjunctivitis were studied, 1 retrospectively (

OBJECTIVE: To determine the trends of conjunctival sac bacterial flora isolated from patients prior to cataract surgery.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study comprised 579 patients (579 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery. Specimens were collected by lightly rubbing the inferior palpebral conjunctival sac with a sterile cotton swab 2 weeks before surgery, and then cultured for isolation of bacteria and antimicrobial sensitivity testing. The bacterial isolates and percentage of drug-resistant isolates were compared among age groups and according to whether or not patients had diabetes mellitus, hy

Reactive arthritis is an extremely rare spondyloarthritis that affects the peripheral joints and spine, resulting in common symptoms such as arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis, and mucocutaneous lesions. On rare occasions, oral lesions such as circinate erosions on the hard and soft palate, gums, tongue, and cheeks may occur. Reactive arthritis may develop during or after genitourinary or gastrointestinal bacterial infections such as Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, and Chlamydia. A 36-year-old man presented with circinate balanitis, urethral discharge, oligoarthralgia, conjunctivitis, lymph

Moraxella is an ocular bacterial pathogen isolated in cases of keratitis, conjunctivitis, and endophthalmitis. Gram-negative brick-shaped diplobacilli from ocular specimens, and slow growth in culture, are early indications of Moraxella ocular infection; however, identifying Moraxella to species can be complex and inconsistent. In this study, bacteria consistent with Moraxella were identified to species using: (1) DNA sequencing coupled with vancomycin susceptibility, (2) MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and (3) the Biolog ID system. Study samples consisted of nine ATCC Moraxella controls, 82 isol

The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate niosomal dispersions loaded with the hydrophilic drug; lomefloxacin Hcl (LXN) for the management of ocular bacterial conjunctivitis. LXN-loaded niosomes were prepared by the thin film hydration method following a full factorial formulation design. Two independent variables were evaluated: the type of surfactant (X1) and the surfactant:cholesterol ratio (X2). The dependent variables comprised entrapment efficiency (EE%: Y1), particle size (PS: Y2) and zeta potential (ZP: Y3). The optimum formulation, N-LXN14 (Tw60: CH, 1:1), was spherical in shap

BACKGROUND: One in eight schoolchildren have an episode of acute infective conjunctivitis every year. Standard clinical practice is to prescribe a topical antibiotic, although the evidence to support this practice is scarce. We undertook a randomised double-blind trial to compare the effectiveness of chloramphenicol eye drops with placebo in children with infective conjunctivitis in primary care.
METHODS: Our study included 326 children aged 6 months to 12 years with a clinical diagnosis of conjunctivitis who were recruited from 12 general medical practices in the UK. We assigned 163 children

PURPOSE: To help clinicians diagnose and manage unilateral recalcitrant chronic bacterial conjunctivitis secondary to a retained soft contact lens and describe the first report of Gram-negative bacteria causing this condition.
METHODS: Chart review of successive cases presenting with unilateral chronic conjunctivitis with positive cultures and a retained contact lens.
RESULTS: Three cases were identified and described. Culturing of the retained contact lenses grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the first case, Achromobacter xylosoxidans in the second, and Staphylococcus epidermidis in the third.

The efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.3% and norfloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.3% in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis were compared in a double masked randomised study. A total of 131 patients, 65 treated with ciprofloxacin (42 with conjunctivitis and 23 with blepharitis) and 66 treated with norfloxacin (39 with conjunctivitis and 27 with blepharitis) were enrolled in the study at five centres in France. In the efficacy population, pathogens were eradicated or reduced in 96% (24/25) of patients in the ciprofloxacin group and 89% (24/27) in the

Reflecting colours from the fatty layer of the precorneal film have been studied using mat filter (grease-proof paper, parchment paper, tracing paper) in front of the slit lamp mirror, maximally open light slit in a half-lit room, and magnification x 15. The palpebral fissure was narrowed until occurrence of red interference colour (2000 A). In 206 normal eyes the fatty layer was 102 +/- 3nm (+/- SEM), or about 0.1 micron, independent of age, sex and BUT (break up time). Maximum on awakening. Coefficient of variation 12.7 per cent. An increased fatty layer was noticed in cases of blepharitis (

Over a period of 4 months the authors observed 240 outpatients with 302 "red eyes." Oculogenital strains of Chlamydia trachomatis were diagnosed in 12.5% of these cases. Bacterial monoinfections were found in 13.9%, coinfections in 63.9%. The remaining 9.7% included Candida sp. (4%) and Herpes I (1.4%) infections, while 4.3% remained unidentified. Allergic conjunctivitis and "dry eye" syndromes were not considered separately in this study. Specific antibiotic therapy improved the clinical condition due to "saprophytic" bacterial coinfections, indicating the pathogenic importance of this type o

PURPOSE: To explore the current state of diagnosis and management of neonatal conjunctivitis.
METHODS: Cosmos, an EHR-based, de-identified data set including more than 200 million patients, was used for this study. Neonates born between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2022, discharged from the hospital by day 3 of life, and with an ambulatory visit within the first 4 weeks of life associated with a new diagnosis of neonatal conjunctivitis (SNOMED) or conjunctivitis (ICD-10 H10.*) were included. Cosmos slicer/dicer software was used to extract demographic, diagnostic, etiologic, and therapeut

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis is a relatively common condition of the eye that can be caused by a number of different pathogens including bacteria and viruses. Clinical differentiation between adenoviral and bacterial conjunctivitis is difficult, often resulting in misdiagnosis and the provision of inappropriate treatment.
METHODS: A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed from a societal perspective using primary, secondary, published literature, and expert opinion data sources. The incremental costs and effects (cases of unnecessary antibiotic treatment avoided) for a rapid point-of-care tes

BACKGROUND: Acute infectious conjunctivitis is a common disorder in primary care. Despite a lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of topical antibiotics for the treatment of acute infectious conjunctivitis, most patients presenting in primary care with the condition receive topical antibiotics. In The Netherlands, fusidic acid is most frequently prescribed.
AIM: To assess the effectiveness of fusidic acid gel compared to placebo for acute infectious conjunctivitis.
DESIGN: Double-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING: Twenty-five Dutch primary care centres.
