Common causes of red eye presenting in northern Iran.

AIM: This study aimed to determine the causes of red eye disease among patients of Mazandaran-Northern Iran. METHODS: This cross sectional study included 840 patients who referred to eye clinics with ocular complaints. A detailed history of patients was recorded and their eyes were examined. Then, pre designed checklists were completed by the researcher. RESULTS: The most common cause of red eye was conjunctivitis - 30% (252/ 840), foreign bodies 23.2%, trauma including penetrating or blunt 8.6%, respectively. There was a significant relationship between the red eye trauma, with acute onset

A combination povidone-iodine 0.4%/dexamethasone 0.1% ophthalmic suspension in the treatment of adenoviral conjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this pilot study was to determine the preliminary efficacy of a novel ophthalmic suspension containing povidone-iodine 0.4% and dexamethasone 0.1% in the treatment of adenoviral conjunctivitis. METHODS: A prospective, open-label, single-armed, phase II clinical trial in humans. Eligible patients with the clinical signs and symptoms of acute conjunctivitis who tested positive for adenoviral antigen by Rapid Pathogen Screening (RPS) Adeno Detector were enrolled in a single treatment arm consisting of a combination povidone-iodine 0.4%/dexamethasone 0.1% sterile op

Conjunctivitis, tracheitis, and pneumonia associated with herpesvirus infection in green sea turtles.

Fourteen juvenile (15- to 20-month-old) green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), representative of a group of sea turtles with clinical signs of respiratory tract disease, were euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. Macroscopically, lesions included periglottal necrosis, tracheitis with intraluminal caseous and laminated necrotic debris, and severe pneumonia. Several turtles had caseous conjunctival exudate covering the eyes. Microscopically, the turtles had fibrinonecrotic inflammation around the glottal opening, tracheitis, and severe bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia. In multifocal a

Conjunctival dermoid cyst seen on examination as a chronically red eye.

We describe a patient who was seen with a unilateral red eye and purulent discharge refractory to antibiotic treatment with multiple antibiotic regimens over the previous 4 months. Initially it was believed to be a bacterial conjunctivitis, but when conventional treatments failed it was thought to be a viral conjunctivitis with bacterial superinfection. Cultures yielded only Enterococcus. There was a small mass with a draining fistulous tract at the lateral canthus. Symptoms persisted despite courses of topical and systemic antibiotics followed by a tapering dose of steroids. The patient was t

Identification of rearranged sequences of HPV16 DNA in precancerous and cervical cancer cases.

Integration of HPV16 DNA into the host chromosome is considered to be a crucial step towards genomic instability and cervical cancer development. Aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of HPV16 rearranged intra-viral sequences in HPV16-positive normal, precancerous and cervical cancer samples using the method of Restriction Site-PCR (RS-PCR). Sequence analysis of HPV16 integrants revealed for the first time in clinical samples two distinct rearranged intra-viral sequences, concerning the conjunction of E2 and L1 genes and the conjunction of E1 and L1 genes with inverted orien

Evidence-based treatment of acute infective conjunctivitis: Breaking the cycle of antibiotic prescribing.

OBJECTIVE: To discover the best treatments for acute infective conjunctivitis and to discern whether antibiotics are necessary for the resolution of bacterial conjunctivitis in particular. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews were searched. Findings were limited to full-text articles from core clinical journals in the English language, and are based on level I or level II evidence. Clinical Evidence was also searched, from which moderate-quality results have been cited. MAIN MESSAGE: Infective conjunctivitis should be managed conservatively, w

Rapid diagnosis of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to coxsackievirus A24 variant by real-time one-step RT-PCR.

Coxsackievirus A24 variant is, together with enterovirus 70 and adenoviruses, the major etiological agent involved in acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreaks worldwide. However, the standard virus isolation method followed by serotyping or VP1 region sequencing is time-consuming. A rapid method for the detection of coxsackievirus A24 variant from conjunctival swab specimens would be useful in the context of explosive and extensive outbreaks. A one-step real-time RT-PCR assay based on TaqMan technology was thus developed and assessed on 36 conjunctival swabs from outbreaks of conjunctivitis

[Molecular detection of adenovirus type-8 epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in Hungary].

INTRODUCTION: Both infectious and non-infectious forms of acute conjunctivitis are known. Viruses, especially different types of adenoviruses are the etiological agents of infectious epidemic conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis epidemica). AIMS: The author's aims were to describe an outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis and to detect the viral agent by molecular methods in Hungary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Classical epidemiological methods were used for investigation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by sequencing were used for the detection of adenoviral hexon region from freshly collected conj

Pertussis-like syndrome associated with adenovirus presenting with hyperleukocytosis: Case report.

Adenovirus is an infectious viral agent that causes variety of clinical presentations such as respiratory disease, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis. Hepatitis, pancreatitis, myocarditis, encephalitis, and disseminated infection are primarily seen in immunocompromised patients. Rarely, adenovirus infection can present with pertussis-like syndrome. Described here is case of pertussis-like syndrome associated with adenovirus presenting with hyperleukocytosis.

A Closed-Loop Audit: The Assessment of Red Flags and Management of Acute Conjunctivitis in Primary Care.

Background Acute red eye is a common presenting complaint to primary care. Although conjunctivitis is the most common cause, some conditions can be sight-threatening. Diagnosing such conditions can be difficult given the broad differential diagnoses and limited specialist equipment. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published five "red flags," which may indicate the need for urgent ophthalmological assessment: reduced visual acuity (VA), copious discharge, marked eye pain/photophobia, contact lens use and recent trauma. For patients not requiring specialist refer
