Contraception for women with multiple sclerosis: Guidance for healthcare providers.

Family planning is essential for any comprehensive treatment plan for women of reproductive age with multiple sclerosis (MS), including counseling on using effective contraception to optimally time desired and prevent unintended pregnancies. This topical review summarizes the first evidence-based recommendations on contraception safety for women with MS. In 2016, evidence-based recommendations for contraceptive use by women with MS were included in US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use. They were developed after review of published scientific evidence on contraception safety an

The worldwide use of steroidal contraception.

Historically, concerns about rapidly growing populations and resources that could not support them persuaded governments of developing countries to initiate family planning programs. Between the early 1960s and the early 1980s, the number of governments supporting these programs increased from 7 to approximately 120. Today, 52 governments in developing countries provide support to family planning programs because of the demographic rationale, and 65 governments do so because of human rights and health considerations: The effective use of family planning significantly diminishes infant, child,

A randomized controlled trial of an intervention delivered by mobile phone text message to increase the acceptability of effective contraception among young women in Palestine.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that mobile phone contraceptive behavioral interventions can increase knowledge and use of contraception, but other studies have failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect. The objective of this trial was to estimate the effect of a contraceptive behavioral intervention delivered by mobile phone text message on young Palestinian women's attitudes towards effective contraception. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial among women aged 18-24 years living in the West Bank, who were not using an effective method of contraception. The intervention group r

Barrier and spermicidal contraceptive methods and risk of invasive cervical cancer.

The effects of barrier and spermicidal methods of contraception on cervical cancer risk were examined by studying 479 cases of histologically confirmed invasive cervical cancer cases and 788 random digit dialing controls. In addition to a detailed history of contraceptive practices, information was available on numerous potential confounders, including demographic characteristics, sexual behavior, reproductive factors, Pap smear screening history, and smoking. After adjustment for relevant confounders, diaphragm and condom use were found not to be significantly associated with risk of cervical

Investigational hormone receptor agonists as ongoing female contraception: a focus on selective progesterone receptor modulators in early clinical development.

INTRODUCTION: As efforts are made to continue to increase the safety of contraceptive methods, those without estrogen have attracted new attention. Progestin-only options are available in many delivery systems, but most cause disturbed bleeding patterns. For gynecologic patients, selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) have been approved for medical abortion, for ovulation suppression in emergency contraception, and for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding due to leiomyoma. AREAS COVERED: This article discusses the role of SPRMs in controlling fertility on an ongoing basis wit

Changes in use of long-acting contraceptive methods in the United States, 2007-2009.

OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods-the intrauterine device (IUD) and implant--and the extent to which these methods have replaced permanent sterilization and less effective short-acting methods. DESIGN: We tabulated data from female survey respondents overall and by demographic subgroups. We performed t-tests of the differences in the proportions of female contraceptors using LARC in 2007 and 2009. We also looked at use of LARC, sterilization, other methods, and no method among women at risk of unintended pregnancy. SETTING: In-home

Now is the time to safeguard access to emergency contraception as abortion restrictions sweep the United States.

Abortion and contraception are essential components of reproductive healthcare. As 26 states are likely to severely restrict access to abortion following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, access to emergency contraception will be more important than ever. Existing barriers to emergency contraception - including cost, obstacles to over-the-counter purchase, low awareness and availability of the most effective options, myths about safety and mechanism of action - already substantially limit access. Proactive solutions include public information campaigns

Intrauterine contraception for adolescents aged 14-18 years: a multicenter randomized pilot study of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system compared to the Copper T 380A.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine contraception can provide adolescents with effective, long-term contraception as well as with other health benefits. In adult populations, intrauterine contraception rates highly in patient satisfaction and safety. It is rarely prescribed to adolescents because of limited data. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter, randomized, controlled, participant-blinded pilot study of 14-18-year-old females assigned to the Copper T 380A intrauterine device or the Levonorgestrel Intrauterine System. Participants were followed up for 6 months following insertion. RESULTS: We enrolled 23 part

Influence of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on MS symptom fluctuations: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, females with MS often report menstrually-related symptom fluctuations. Hypothetically, use of oral contraceptives (OCs) could reduce these fluctuations, particularly continuous OCs (11+ weeks of consistent exogenous hormones followed by 1 week placebo). OBJECTIVES: To prospectively capture (1) whether neurologic and generalized symptoms vary with menstrual cycle phase and (2) whether type of contraception impacts symptom fluctuations. METHODS: In this two-center pilot study, females with MS and a regular menstrual cycle prospectively tracked their menstrual

Factors associated with utilization of long acting and permanent contraceptive methods among married women of reproductive age in Mekelle town, Tigray region, north Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Total Fertility Rate of Ethiopia is 5.4 children per women, population growth rate is estimated to be 2.7% per year and contraceptive prevalence rate is only 15% while the unmet need for family planning is 34%. Overall awareness of Family Planning methods is high, at 87%. The prevalence of long acting and permanent contraceptive methods (LAPMs) in Tigray region was very low which accounts for 0.1% for implants and no users for intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and female sterilization. Moreover almost all m

[Use of contraceptives in Norway in 2005].

BACKGROUND: New administration forms for hormonal contraception and a higher patient's charge for sterilisation of women have changed the pattern of contraceptive use in Norway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In October 2005, more than 5,000 women listed in a Webpanel of more than 50,000 subscribers were invited to participate in survey on contraceptive use. The response rate was 41%. 1,575 women, aged 20- 44 years, who were sexually active the last three months before the interview, did not plan to become pregnant and defined themselves as fertile were eligible for analysis. RESULTS: Over 90% of the

[Current status of the female condom in Africa].

The female condom was developed in the 1980s. It is a contraceptive device used by women that protects against both pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV infection. Two studies have investigated the contraceptive effectiveness of the female condom, and it was found to be as effective as other barrier methods. It has been shown to be effective against STD and HIV transmission in vitro but there is only limited evidence of its efficacy in vivo. No serious local side effects or allergies have been reported and the female condom can be used with any type of lubricant, sp

Changes in the use of effective and long-acting reversible contraception in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVES: To calculate the prevalence and identify correlates of unmet need for contraception and to assess whether prevalence of use of effective contraception and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) has changed over time among married or cohabiting, reproductive-age women in Vietnam. METHODS: Study population was drawn from nationally representative Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys conducted in 2000, 2006, 2011 and 2014. Unmet need for contraception was defined as occurring when a fecund, married or cohabiting woman is not using any method of contraception but either does not wa
