Study protocol: a stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial of a healthy lifestyle intervention for people attending residential substance abuse treatment.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease and cancer are leading causes of mortality for people with a history of alcohol or other substance use disorders. These chronic diseases share the same four primary behavioural risk factors i.e. excessive alcohol use, smoking, low intake of fruit and vegetables and physical inactivity. In addition to addressing problematic alcohol use, there is the potential for substance abuse treatment services to also address these other behaviours. Healthy Recovery is an 8-session group-based intervention that targets these multiple behavioural health risk factors and was

Water quality benchmarking (WQB) and priority control screening (PCS) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs) in China: necessity, method and a case study.

The priority control screening (PCS) and water quality benchmarking (WQB) of toxic chemicals in water are key steps to ensure the safety of drinking water and aquatic ecosystem that is the crucial goal of water environment management. Owing to the different levels of social-economic development in different countries and regions, the PCS and WQB of toxic chemicals must be determined in accordance with their specific water environment situations. However, in China, the PCS and WQB of toxic chemicals in water were mainly introduced from the other countries. A method for the PCS and WQB of toxic

Targeting children of substance-using parents with the community-based group intervention TRAMPOLINE: a randomised controlled trial--design, evaluation, recruitment issues.

BACKGROUND: Children of substance-abusing parents are at risk for developing psychosocial development problems. In Germany it is estimated that approx. 2.65 million children are affected by parental substance abuse or dependence. Only ten percent of them receive treatment when parents are treated. To date, no evaluated programme for children from substance-affected families exists in Germany. The study described in this protocol is designed to test the effectiveness of the group programme TRAMPOLINE for children aged 8-12 years with at least one substance-abusing or -dependent caregiver. In-line Raman spectroscopy real-time glucose prediction method for commercial pneumococcal vaccine drug substance fermentation manufacturing process control.

Traditional off-line analysis methods to quantify residual metabolite concentrations in a drug substance fermentation process consume valuable time, require costly resources, and demand potentially hazardous manual operations when working with pathogenic biological organisms. This case study focuses on the successful method development and validation of Raman spectroscopy as an in-line process analytical technology (PAT) to replace the existing off-line assay for real-time glucose quantification. The value and feasibility of Raman spectroscopy as an in situ PAT method are recognized and demons

Simultaneous Determination of Four Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in DHA Products using LC-MS/MS for Quality Control and Risk Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a critical dietary supplement for vulnerable populations (e.g., infants, pregnant women), but contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-persistent "forever chemicals"-poses potential health risks. Currently, no standardized methods exist for PFAS detection in DHA products, hindering quality control and risk assessment. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a sensitive LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of four PFAS (PFOA, PFODA, PFOS, and PFBS) in DHA matrices (algal oil and fish oil) and support product safety evaluation.

Interventions to reduce relapse risk and drug craving in patients with substance use disorders in forensic psychiatric care: a systematic review of controlled trials.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: Substance use is a risk factor for relapse in violent crime. In forensic psychiatric care (FPC), severe mental disorder and comorbid substance use is common, with a majority having a history of substance use disorder (SUD) and many having committed their index crime while under influence. FPC is dedicated to treating these patients to reduce the risk of criminal recidivism. Though interventions for SUD are used, none of them have been developed to meet the needs of the FPC patient group specifically. AIM: To identify and evaluate controlled interventions that p

Examining Racial Differences in the Effects of the Brazilian State-Level Police Substance Use Prevention Program in Schools: a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Adolescent alcohol and tobacco use are associated with various health risks, including cognitive and developmental impairments. Minority youth may face additional vulnerabilities, such as racism and discrimination, which contribute to stress and an increased risk of substance use. This study examined the effects of a school-based prevention program implemented by the Brazilian state-level police forces in schools, focusing on differences across racial groups. We analyzed data from two cluster-randomized controlled trials conducted in 2019 in public schools on the outskirts of São Paulo. The sa

Impact of mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place order on controlled substance use among rural versus urban communities in the United States.

PURPOSE: Mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place (SIP) orders have been imposed to fight the pandemic. They may also have led to unintended consequences of increased use of controlled substances especially among rural communities due to increased social isolation. Using the data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers, this study tests the hypothesis that the poison control centers received higher rates of calls related to exposures to controlled substances from rural counties than they did from urban counties during the SIP period. METHODS: Call counts received by the poison cont

Does a mindfulness-augmented version of the German Strengthening Families Program reduce substance use in adolescents? Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness training (MT) for parents of adolescents has been shown to improve mental health and stress-related outcomes in individuals and their families. Studies of MT among young people are mainly delivered in educational or clinical settings, and there is a need for controlled studies on both parent-directed and adolescent-directed approaches. It is unclear whether MT has preventive effects for substance use outcomes. The primary objective of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of family-based MT targeting both adolescents and their parents to prevent adolescent substan

Jail-to-community treatment continuum for adults with co-occurring substance use and mental disorders: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adults with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (CODs) are overrepresented in jails. In-custody barriers to treatment, including a lack of evidence-based treatment options and the often short periods of incarceration, and limited communication between jails and community-based treatment agencies that can hinder immediate enrollment into community care once released have contributed to a cycle of limited treatment engagement, unaddressed criminogenic risks, and (re)arrest among this vulnerable and high-risk population. This paper describes a study that will develop resea

Economic evaluation of a behavioral intervention versus brief advice for substance use treatment in pregnant women: results from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and fetal morbidities and substantial economic costs. However, few studies have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of substance use treatment programs in pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the economic impact of a behavioral intervention that integrated motivational enhancement therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (MET-CBT) for treatment of substance use in pregnancy, in comparison with brief advice. METHODS: We conducted an economic evaluation alongside a clinical trial by collecting data on r

Substance P signaling controls mast cell activation, degranulation, and nociceptive sensitization in a rat fracture model of complex regional pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with complex regional pain syndrome have increased tryptase in the skin of the affected extremity indicating mast cell (MC) accumulation and degranulation, processes known to be mediated by substance P (SP). The dysregulation of SP release from primary afferent neurons is characteristic of complex regional pain syndrome. The authors hypothesized that SP acting through the neurokinin-1 receptor results in mast cell accumulation, degranulation, and nociceptive sensitization in a rat model of complex regional pain syndrome. METHODS: Groups of 6-10 rats underwent tibia fractu

Maternal control during prenatal oxycodone exposure: differential effects of voluntary versus involuntary self-administration on offspring substance use vulnerability in rats.

Prenatal opioid exposure is a growing clinical concern, yet the impact of maternal control over drug intake on long-term offspring outcomes remains unclear. Here, we utilized a translational rat model to examine how the mode of oxycodone administration during pregnancy influences substance use vulnerability in adult offspring. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 10-11/group) were assigned to one of three groups: voluntary intravenous self-administration (Oxycodone-Lead), yoked non-contingent oxycodone delivery (Oxycodone-Yoked), or yoked saline control (Saline-Yoked). The dam self-administered oxy
