Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii as a pathogen of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy.

A 35-year-old woman complained of an unpleasant odor for a few days after a change in foundation cream. The patient had previously undergone conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy with a Jones tube fixed with non-absorbable suture. Slit-lamp examination revealed an orange-colored discharge in the tube. A culture test of the discharge showed Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii (1+), Aspergillus versicolor (1+), and Mycobacterium chelonae (1+). After medical treatment and suture removal, the discharge completely disappeared. This is the first reported case of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-d…

Evaluation of Conventional PCR for Detection of Toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae Strains in Malaysia.

Diphtheria is an infectious but vaccine preventable disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae and humans are the only reservoir. While toxigenic strains most frequently cause pharyngeal diphtheria, non-toxigenic strains commonly cause cutaneous infections. In 2016, there was a sudden increase in cases of C. diphtheriae reported in Malaysia. The toxigenic strains are currently determined using Elek's test and are carried out only in the reference laboratory. With the sudden increase in diphtheria cases in Malaysia, it is important for local laboratories in state hospitals to be able to perf…

Development of a single-cell GlxR-based cAMP biosensor for Corynebacterium glutamicum.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) plays a regulatory role as second messenger in many species. In the industrial model organism Corynebacterium glutamicum, cAMP acts as effector of the global transcriptional regulator GlxR, a homolog of enterobacterial Crp. The cAMP-GlxR complex activates or represses the expression of about 200 target genes. CyaB, a membrane-bound class III adenylate cyclase, synthesizes cAMP from ATP, but another yet unknown cAMP-forming enzyme is likely present in C. glutamicum. Recently, we identified the cAMP phosphodiesterase CpdA, which catalyzes the conversion of c…

Pathogenic properties of a Corynebacterium diphtheriae strain isolated from a case of osteomyelitis.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is typically recognized as a colonizer of the upper respiratory tract (respiratory diphtheria) and the skin (cutaneous diphtheria). However, different strains of Corynebacteriumdiphtheriae can also cause invasive infections. In this study, the characterization of a non-toxigenic Corynebacteriumdiphtheriae strain (designated BR-INCA5015) isolated from osteomyelitis in the frontal bone of a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma was performed. Pathogenic properties of the strain BR-INCA5015 were tested in a Caenorhabditis elegans survival assay showing strong colonizat…

The detection of toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans from cats with nasal inflammation in Japan.

Corynebacterium ulcerans (toxigenic C. ulcerans) produces the diphtheria toxin, which causes pharyngeal and cutaneous diphtheria-like disease in people, and this bacterium is commonly detected in dogs and cats that are reared at home. It is considered dangerous when a carrier animal becomes the source of infection in people. To investigate the carrier situation of toxigenic C. ulcerans of cats bred in Japan, bacteria were isolated from 37 cats with a primary complaint of rhinitis in 16 veterinary hospitals in Osaka. Toxigenic C. ulcerans was detected in two of the cats. By drug sensitivity tes…

Corynebacterium spp. in dogs and cats with otitis externa and/or media: a retrospective study.

The role of Corynebacterium spp. in the pathogenesis of canine and feline otitis externa/media and their appropriate antimicrobial therapy are unclear. The objectives of this study were to (1) better establish the pathogenicity of Corynebacterium spp. in otitis utilizing reported criteria and by assessing clinical response to antibiotic therapy and (2) to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Corynebacterium spp. associated with otitis. The study was retrospective, targeting cultures positive for Corynebacterium spp. Corynebacterium spp. were part of mixed microbial population…

Rare human skin infection with Corynebacterium ulcerans: transmission by a domestic cat.

Corynebacterium ulcerans is mainly known for its ability to cause animal infections. Some strains of C. ulcerans produce diphtheria toxin, which can cause life-threatening cardiopathies and neuropathies in humans. Human cutaneous C. ulcerans infection is a very rare disease that mimics classical cutaneous diphtheria. We present a very rare case of a C. ulcerans skin infection caused by a non-diphtheria toxin-producing strain of C. ulcerans that resolved after 3 weeks of therapy with amoxicillin-clavulanate. A pet cat was the probable source of infection. The presence of C. ulcerans in the mout…

An unusual course of invasive infection due to nontoxinogenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

The authors report a case of complicated sepsis caused by nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae biotype gravis in a young immunocompetent female with no predisposing factors. She acquired the infection from her boyfriend, an asymptomatic carrier of nontoxigenic strain. The primary site of infection and subsequent sepsis was not identified. The occurence and importance of carriage and invasive infections caused by nontoxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae are discused.

Infection of the skin caused by Corynebacterium ulcerans and mimicking classical cutaneous diphtheria.

Extrapharyngeal infections caused by Corynebacterium ulcerans have rarely been reported previously, and diphtheria toxin production has usually not been addressed. This case demonstrates that strains of C. ulcerans that produce diphtheria toxin can cause infections of the skin that completely mimic typical cutaneous diphtheria, thereby potentially providing a source of bacteria capable of causing life-threatening diseases in the patient's environment. Therefore, it is recommended to screen wound swabs for coryneform bacteria, identify all isolates, carefully assess possible toxin production, a…

Identification of clinical isolates of nondiphtherial Corynebacterium species and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns.

Starting in 1982, our laboratory has performed species identification of coryneform bacteria isolated from blood cultures, intravenous (i.v.) catheter tips and sites, urines with high colony counts, and other potentially significant cultures, using predefined criteria. Of 283 isolates identified, Corynebacterium jeikeium was the most common (47%), followed by CDC group G2 (12%) and C. minutissimum (8%). Blood cultures and i.v. catheter-related sources were the most frequent sources (58% of total). Certain species or groups, like CDC group G2, were most frequently isolated from blood or i.v. ca…

Histopathology of the early phase during experimental Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in lambs.

Histological responses during experimental Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in lambs were investigated in parotid lymph nodes for ten days following inoculation. Lambs were infected by the subcutaneous route into the right eyelid with a virulent strain of C. pseudotuberculosis. Multiple microscopic acute abscesses, predominantly infiltrated with polymorphonuclear (PMN) leucocytes, were seen in the right parotid lymph node on the 1st day post-inoculation (PI). This massive PMN infiltration coincided with a peripheral blood granulocytosis. On day 3 PI, an influx of histiocytes was ob…

[Pitted keratolysis of hyperkeratotic form and isolation of the etiologic agent: Corynebacterium sp].

Two cases of "pitted keratolysis" with a very accentuated plantar hyperkeratosis, and the isolation on chocolate thelurite agar of the presumptive etiologic agent, Corynebacterium sp., is presented. In order to keep permanently in mind, for a proper diagnosis, the original description of the disease as "keratoma plantare sulcatum" (Castellani, 1910), we are proposing to distinguish two different clinical forms: The hyperkeratotic one and the common or usual form of "pitted keratolysis" with keratolysis as the main sign. The prosecution of our biochemical studies with a significant number of st…

Corynebacterium equi Infections in Horses, 1958-1984: A Review of 131 Cases.

Of 131 cases of Corynebacterium equi infection in horses submitted for necropsy to the Ontario Veterinary College or Veterinary Laboratory Services, OMAF, Guelph, Ontario from 1958 to 1984, 115 were diagnosed as suppurative pneumonia, and of these 55 had associated ulcerative enterocolitis. Only five animals had intestinal involvement without pulmonary lesions. The remaining 11 cases included arthritis/cellulitis, skin abscesses and submandibular lymphadenitis. While the lung, intestine and associated lymph nodes yielded C. equi most frequently, in 21% of cases C. equi was also cultured from p…
