Eleven budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) from a zoological collection presented at necropsy with emaciation and splenomegaly or hepatome … sittacus erithacus). The outbreak did not affect cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) and blue quail (Coturnix chinensis) kept in the same aviary. A group of budgerigars added to the collection soon before the opening of the aviary may have introduced reovirus and Chlamydophila into the collection.

Short break (SBK) is a new semilethal mutation of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The SBK individuals are characterized externally by short breaks, shanks, and digits. The shank is also thicker than the wild type. The shape of the mutant beak does not show a parrotlike appearance, contrasting with that of other poultry chondrodystrophic mutants reported in the literature. Bones in the fore and hind limbs of the SBK mutant are also shorter than the wild types. The humerus and ulna in the wing are significantly thicker than the wild types. Other bones in the wing and leg show approximately t…

Neophobia, fear of new stimuli, exhibits stable individual variation and has been suggested to have genetic underpinnings linked to specific neural pathways. In this study, we explored the relationship between neophobic responses and gene expression in Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) within the context of Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory, which delineates the neural mechanisms governing approach and avoidance behaviors. Using a novel object task, we demonstrated that individual differences in approach motivation toward food rewards were significantly associated with the expression of the d…

Pesticides are classified as a major source of contamination and a substantial risk to both humans and animals. The fourth generation of pesticides is the neonicoetinoid insecticides. Imidacloprid is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide utilized in crop protection. The current study was conducted to assess behaviour, performance, and some blood parameters due to long-term use of sub-lethal doses of IM in Japanese quails and the protective impact of vitamin B complex. Non-sexed, one day-old chicks were split into three groups of 45 each. Oral administration of imidacloprid in water at dose o

Maternal immunoglobulin Y (IgY) is transferred from the bloodstream to the yolk of maturing oocytes in avian species, which is crucial for the passive immunity of neonatal chicks. The receptor responsible for maternal blood IgY transfer to the yolk remains unidentified. Recently, we found that an IgY receptor, FcRY, is expressed in the vascular endothelial cells of ovarian follicles. However, there is no evidence of the direct binding of IgY to FcRY in vascular endothelial cells of avian ovarian follicles. To investigate how ovarian FcRY interacts with IgY, we performed a microscopic analysis

BACKGROUND: The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the Japanese quail is an excellent model for studying photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to its rich vascularization. PDT is used not only in oncological treatment but also in infectious diseases, or psoriasis, where it yields significant advantages. This treatment also has its limitations, such as burning, itching, erythema, redness, swelling, and delayed wound healing. The aim of this study was to analyse the potentially protective properties of the tissue hormone leptin during PDT.
METHODS: Japanese quail embryos incubated ex ovo were used in t

The structural connectivity of animal brains can be revealed using post-mortem diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Despite the existence of several structural atlases of avian brains, few of them address the bird's structural connectivity. In this study, a novel atlas of the structural connectivity is proposed for the male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), aiming at investigating two lines divergent on their emotionality trait: the short tonic immobility (STI) and the long tonic immobility (LTI) lines. The STI line presents a low emotionality trait, while the LTI line expres…

In the avian oocytal germ disc region, at the end of oogenesis, we discerned four ooplasms (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) presenting an onion-peel distribution (from peripheral and superficial to central and deep. Their fate was followed during early embryonic development. The most superficial and peripheral alpha ooplasm plays a fundamental role during cleavage. The beta ooplasm, originally localized in the peripheral region of the blastodisc, becomes mainly concentrated in the primitive streak. At the moment of bilateral symmetrization, a spatially oblique, sickle-shaped uptake of gamma and del

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of large-dose beta-carotene supplementation on blood retinoid and beta-carotene levels as well as on the progesterone secretion of the granulosa cells in Japanese quail. Laying quails were assigned to three dietary groups. The control group (Group C) received the basal diet (laying feed containing 9000 IU vitamin A/kg). In the treated groups (Groups BC1 and BC2) the basal diet was supplemented with 10(2) and 10(3) mg/kg beta-carotene (BC), respectively. At the end of the two-week feeding period, 10 birds from each group were euthanised. Blood sam

Elongation of chick limb buds depends on the presence of the apical ectodermal ridge which is induced by subjacent limb bud mesoderm. Recombination experiments have shown that the limb bud mesoderm loses the capacity to induce ridges by late stage 17. Moreover, in normal limb development only one ridge forms. However, in the eudiplopodia chick mutant accessory ectodermal ridges form on the dorsal surface of limb buds as late as stage 22. Tissue recombinant experiments show that the mutation affects the ectoderm, extending the time it responds to ridge induction (R.A. Fraser and U.K. Abbott (19

The quail (Coturnix japonica) is an economically important poultry species and a useful avian model for muscle biology. Although circular RNA (circRNA)-miRNA competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks have been described in chicken and duck skeletal muscle, their roles in quail remain poorly defined. We identified circMAPKBP1, generated from the mitogen-activated protein kinase binding protein 1 (MAPKBP1), as highly expressed in quail skeletal muscle and myoblasts. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments in quail myoblast 7 (QM7) cells showed that circMAPKBP1 promotes proliferation while inhib…

Egg size represents a primary form of parental investment, but whether it is causally related to offspring fitness is difficult to establish. We mated Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) from replicated selection lines for high and low maternal investment in egg size to partners from the same and alternate selection line. We combined this with detailed pedigree information to partition variation in the size and hatching success of their eggs into their underlying genetic and non-genetic components, and estimated the correlation between these traits at all levels. Variation in egg size was prima…
