Race and ethnicity moderate the associations between lifetime psilocybin use and crime arrests.

INTRODUCTION: Psilocybin use has been linked to lowered odds of crime-related outcomes across a host of observational studies. No studies have investigated how these associations may differ among those of different races and ethnicities. METHODS: Using a nationally-representative sample of 734,061 adults from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002-2020), we investigated whether race and ethnicity moderate the associations between lifetime psilocybin use and four measures of crime arrests (property crime, assault, serious violence, and miscellaneous crimes). RESULTS: First, we repli

Crime-Specific Recidivism in Criminal Justice Clients with Substance Use-A Cohort Study.

Criminal recidivism is a major global concern. There is a well-known association between substance use disorders and offending. Yet, little is known about crime-specific recidivism. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between specific substance use and crime-specific recidivism. The study is based on 4207 Swedish prison clients with substance use assessed with Addiction Severity Index interviews between 2001 and 2006. Clients were followed for an average of 2.7 years. Risk factors for criminal recidivism were assessed with the Cox regression analysis. Sixty-eight percent

Review Article: Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids, Violence, and Crime: Two Cases and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use has become a major worldwide substance use disorder, affecting tens of millions of individuals. Importantly, it is now increasingly recognized that some individuals develop uncharacteristically violent or criminal behaviors when using AAS. We sought to summarize available information on this topic. METHODS: We reviewed the published literature on AAS-induced behavioral effects and augmented this information with extensive observations from our clinical and forensic experience. RESULTS: It is now generally accepted that some AAS

Relationship between Thyroid Hormone Levels and Crime Type: A Controlled Study in Prisoners.

Various factors cause aggression, which can be related to imbalance of T3 and T4 hormones, which can act as neurotransmitters and are reported to be elevated during aggression. This indicates changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis that cause long-term changes in aggressive behaviour, especially in criminals. Moreover, mental and behavioural disorders possibly occur in individuals with impairment in thyroid hormone balance. The main rationale for this study was to asses if high T3, high T4, and low TSH hormones may have an effect on aggression-related crime tendency. Furthermore, th

Identifying crime victims vulnerable to persistent depressive symptoms: Results from a secondary analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although depression has been extensively studied in relations to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Childhood Maltreatment (CM), we still know little about its relationship with other types of violent crimes (e.g., physical assault, mugging) or how symptoms evolve over time. METHODS: Using a clinical sample of 132 crime victims, this study sought to map out group-based symptoms trajectories using Latent Growth Curve Analysis (LCGA) over the course of one year. RESULTS: Less than one month after having been assaulted, 30% of the sample reached the severe depression threshold. Sym

Genetics and Crime: Integrating New Genomic Discoveries Into Psychological Research About Antisocial Behavior.

Drawing on psychological and sociological theories of crime causation, we tested the hypothesis that genetic risk for low educational attainment (assessed via a genome-wide polygenic score) is associated with criminal offending. We further tested hypotheses of how polygenic risk relates to the development of antisocial behavior from childhood through adulthood. Across the Dunedin and Environmental Risk (E-Risk) birth cohorts of individuals growing up 20 years and 20,000 kilometers apart, education polygenic scores predicted risk of a criminal record with modest effects. Polygenic risk manifest

The relations among animal abuse, psychological disorders, and crime: Implications for forensic assessment.

The confluence of developments in the assessment of animal abuse, the evolution of psychiatric nosology for the diagnosis of conduct disorder, legislative changes involving crimes against non-human animals, and the recent inclusion of crimes against animals in the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System, highlights the critical need for examining the forensic dimensions of animal abuse cases. We provide an overview of the research literature on these topics in the hope that forensic evaluators will have an evidence-based framework for assessing cases they encounter that include perpetra

Bicycle Facilities That Address Safety, Crime, and Economic Development: Perceptions from Morelia, Mexico.

México is a developing nation and, in the city of Morelia, the concept of the bicyclist as a road user appeared only recently in the Municipal Traffic Regulations. Perhaps the right bicycle infrastructure could address safety, crime, and economic development. To identify the best infrastructure, six groups in Morelia ranked and commented on pictures of bicycle environments that exist in bicycle-friendly nations. Perceptions about bike paths, but only those with impossible-to-be-driven-over solid barriers, were associated with safety from crashes, lowering crime, and contributing to economic de

From recruitment to regret: a crime script analysis of illegal kidney donation in Pakistan.

Organ transplantation is regarded as a lifesaving procedure, and a worldwide organ shortage has catalysed the market of illegal organ trade, especially for kidneys, due to high demand and need in low and middle-income countries like Pakistan. This process is often facilitated by sophisticated, organised crime networks acting within or parallel with licit healthcare systems, exploiting the vulnerable communities. Therefore, this study aims to explore the lived experiences of individuals who illegally donate their kidneys in Pakistan, with special focus on the whole process to map the findings o

The Effectiveness of Trauma-Focused Interventions With Individuals Who Perpetrated Crimes: A Systematic Review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is disproportionately prevalent among individuals who have committed crimes compared to the general population. Simultaneously, PTSD is associated with several adverse outcomes, including increased risk of suicidality in prison, poorer treatment outcomes, and higher rates of recidivism. This review seeks to systematize trauma-focused therapies for adult justice-involved populations. It examines their effectiveness across diverse approaches, forensic settings (e.g., prisons, forensic hospitals, probation), and demographic groups (e.g., men, women), expandin

Examining an organizational culture for reducing environmental crime: A case study of Mongolian customs.

An illicit international trade of environmentally sensitive commodities has become a growing concern for customs organizations in developing countries, which are poorly informed about exotic wildlife items and transnationally organized trade networks in various parts of the world. These organizations are expected to have sufficient capacity and knowledge for detecting and preventing environmental crimes at the border. Past studies have not paid substantial attention to how governmental organizations' internal factors, such as organizational culture, can contribute to enhancing their environmen

A Comparative Review of Eugenol and Citral Anticandidal Mechanisms: Partners in Crimes Against Fungi.

Candida albicans is an emerging multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen that causes candidiasis, superficial infections on the mucosa, nails or skin, and life-threatening candidemia in deep tissue when disseminated through the bloodstream. Recently, there has been a sharp rise in resistant strains, posing a considerable clinical challenge for the treatment of candidiasis. There has been a resurged interest in the pharmacological properties of essential oils and their active components, for example, monoterpenes with alcohol (-OH) and aldehyde (-CHO) groups. Eugenol and citral have shown pro

The effects of aftercare/resettlement services on crime and violence in children and youth: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: High rates of youth re-offending indicate that young custody-leavers face challenges when reintegrating into their communities. Aftercare and resettlement programs can occur pre-, during, and post-release and generally provide multiple forms of support services to address youths' transitional needs. OBJECTIVES: The present review examines (1) the impact of youth aftercare/resettlement programs on crime-related outcomes, (2) how treatment effect is moderated by participant, program, and study characteristics, (3) whether some types of interventions are more effective than others, (

Assessment of 19 years of a prospective national survey on drug-facilitated crimes in France.

Drug facilitated-crime or chemical submission (DFC/CS) is defined as the concealed or forced administration of psychoactive substances to a victim for criminal purposes. This is a national program set up in the early 2000 s in the form of a prospective multicenter survey, the results of which this manuscript presents. Over this 19-year period, 5487 cases were collected, analyzed and classified into 54 % of suspected cases, 29 % of chemical vulnerability (CV) cases and 17 % of proven DFC/CS cases. In the overall data, the most prevalent victims were female (81 %), with an average age of 27 year

Knife wound or nosebleed-where does the blood at the crime scene come from?

Secretion analysis is a useful tool in forensic genetics, since it establishes the (cellular) origin of the DNA prior in addition to the identification of the DNA donor. This information can be crucial for the construction of the crime sequence or verification of statements of people involved in the crime. For some secretions, rapid/pretests already exist (blood, semen, urine, and saliva) or can be determined via published methylation analyses or expression analyses (blood, saliva vaginal secretions, menstrual blood, and semen). To discriminate nasal secretion/blood from other secretions (like

Neighborhood Crime and Externalizing Behavior in Toddlers: A Longitudinal Study With Neonatal fMRI and Parenting.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to neighborhood crime has been associated with weaker neonatal frontolimbic connectivity; however, associations with early childhood behavior remain unclear. We hypothesized that living in a high-crime neighborhood would be related to higher externalizing symptoms at age 1 and 2 years, over and above other adversities, and that neonatal frontolimbic connectivity and observed parenting behaviors at 1 year would mediate this relationship. METHOD: Participants included 399 pregnant women, recruited as part of the Early Life Adversity, Biological Embedding, and Risk f

From prison to work? Job-crime patterns for women in a precarious labor market.

Finding and retaining a job is one of the most challenging problems women confront after being released from prison. Given the dynamic and fluid interactions between legal and illegal work, we argue that to better identify and describe job trajectories after release, we must simultaneously consider disparities in work types and offending behavior. We leverage a unique dataset - the Reintegration, Desistance and Recidivism Among Female Inmates in Chile study- to describe patterns of employment within a cohort of 207 women during the first year after being released from prison. By considering di
