Synthetic microbial communities for engineering climate-smart biofertilizers.

Global agricultural productivity is increasingly destabilized by climate change-driven droughts, floods, extreme heat, and severe storms. Although the climate-smart agriculture (CSA) framework addresses these challenges, implementation has focused mainly on plant genetics and agronomic inputs, leaving the adaptive potential of the crop microbiome underexplored. Here, we examine the agricultural use of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) through the "crop holobiont" concept, in which plants and their associated microbiota function as an integrated, responsive system rather than through pl

Mechanistic Insights of Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria Mediated Drought and Salt Stress Tolerance in Plants for Sustainable Agriculture.

Climate change has devastating effects on plant growth and yield. During ontogenesis, plants are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses, including drought and salinity, affecting the crop loss (20-50%) and making them vulnerable in terms of survival. These stresses lead to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage nucleic acid, proteins, and lipids. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have remarkable capabilities in combating drought and salinity stress and improving plant growth, which enhances the crop productivity and contributes to food security. PGPB ino

Phosphorus mobilization and improvement of crop agronomic performances by a new white-rot fungus Ceriporia lacerata HG2011.

BACKGROUND: Some soil microorganisms can mobilize unavailable phosphorus (P) in soils for plant use and increase P fertilizer efficiency. Thus, an abiotic P solubilization experiment and fungal incubation in solution and soil were conducted to investigate the mobilization of various P compounds by a new white-rot fungus Ceriporia lacerata HG2011. The crop agronomic performances were then evaluated in the winter barley-summer maize-winter wheat rotation field. RESULTS: Ceriporia lacerata HG2011 had a wide P mobilization spectrum and mobilized P by different mechanisms depending on P sources su

Azospirillum spp. as bio-innovative defenders: Metabolomic signatures and molecular defense reprogramming in plant immunity against fungal phytopathogens.

Fungal diseases accounts for nearly 30-40% of global crop yield losses, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides. Azospirillum spp., traditionally recognized for plant growth promotion, have emerged as potent biocontrol agent with multifaceted defense functions. Beyond niche competition and siderophore production, Azospirillum primes host immunity through reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and activating systemic defense pathways such as salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Metabolomic analyses reveal its i

[Role of five Lactobacillus strains on carbohydrate degradation in monoxenic chickens].

Five strains of Lactobacillus were isolated in holoxenic roosters; two of these which had an alpha-amylase were inoculated separately into 5 groups of axenic chickens fed the same diet. Some differences among these 5 groups were noted. Lactobacillus proliferation varied between ten and a thousand-fold, depending on the strain, and for the same strain depending on whether the crop, caecum or faeces was examined. Amylolytic lactobacilli in vivo played a role in starch degradation in various ways related to the specific properties of their amylase. Lactic acid production in the crop was higher wi

Incidence of Wheat Curl Mite-Transmitted Viruses in Major Cereal Crops: Potential Roles of Cover and Forage Cereal Crops in the Continuum of Wheat Streak Mosaic Disease Complex.

Wheat streak mosaic disease (WSMD) is the most important viral disease affecting wheat production in the U.S. Great Plains. WSMD is caused by a single or coinfection of wheat curl mite (WCM)-transmitted wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), and/or High Plains wheat mosaic virus (HPWMoV). Nebraska, one of the U.S. Great Plains states, significantly contributes to the national small grain production and utilizes cereal crops as forage and cover crops. In this study, a statewide sampling was conducted during the 2023 to 2025 growing seasons across Nebraska to examine th

Climate-resilient agroforestry: physiological responses to climate change and engineering of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) as a mitigation strategy.

Global climate change threatens the sustainability of agriculture and agroforestry worldwide through increased heat, drought, surface evaporation and associated soil drying. Exposure of crops and forests to warmer and drier environments will increase leaf:air water vapour-pressure deficits (VPD), and will result in increased drought susceptibility and reduced productivity, not only in arid regions but also in tropical regions with seasonal dry periods. Fast-growing, short-rotation forestry (SRF) bioenergy crops such as poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) are particularly susceptible

Short-stature maize systems reduce carbon intensity of grain production by an average of 13% compared to commercially relevant tall comparators.

The sustainable intensification of crop production provides more output with similar or fewer inputs, and therefore helps to produce food, feed, fiber, and fuel more efficiently. While short-stature maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids have been shown to be more climate resilient, with reductions in yield-scaled greenhouse gas production due to reduced crop damage during wind events, other aspects of the climate impact of short-stature maize remain to be quantified. Here we will discuss the use of the greenhouse gases, regulated emissions, and energy use in transportation life cycle assessment model an…

Global agriculture shows limited evidence of a pollinator-driven yield decline to date.

BACKGROUND: During recent decades, declines in the abundance and diversity of wild pollinators have been widely documented, largely driven by human-induced disturbance, such as agricultural expansion, land-use change, pesticide use, invasive species, urbanization, and climate change. Because deficits in animal pollination often limit fruit and seed production in both wild plants and cultivated crops -due to insufficient or ineffective pollen deposition on flowers' stigmas- pollinator decline has raised concern about consequences for plant reproduction and agricultural yields. Expected increase

Farmers' knowledge, perception, and use of phosphorus fertilization for cowpea production in Northern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) is an important legume crop, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Poor soil fertility is among the major abiotic factors that contribute to this crop's low yield. Phosphorus (P)-based fertilizers significantly increase cowpea yields but these fertilizers are not well adopted by smallholder cowpea farmers. To understand why, we surveyed 420 farmers across three major cowpea-producing states in Nigeria: first, we assessed the cowpea farmers' knowledge and perception of the need for fertilizers, especially P fertilizers; and, second, we identified factors that dete

Intraperitoneal Injection of Cisplatin Induces Nausea-Like Responses without Vomiting in Chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus).

Cisplatin is an anti-cancer drug that causes nausea and vomiting as adverse effects. Cisplatin-induced responses have been widely used to investigate the mechanisms underlying nausea and vomiting in several mammalian species. Because nausea and vomiting are caused by a variety of factors, including disease and stress, clarification of these mechanisms would contribute to improving animal welfare in poultry production. However, the effects of cisplatin in chickens have not been well documented. Thus, we examined whether intraperitoneal (IP) injection of cisplatin caused nausea and vomiting in c

Reduction in nutritional quality and growing area suitability of common bean under climate change induced drought stress in Africa.

Climate change impacts on food security will involve negative impacts on crop yields, and potentially on the nutritional quality of staple crops. Common bean is the most important grain legume staple crop for human diets and nutrition worldwide. We demonstrate by crop modeling that the majority of current common bean growing areas in southeastern Africa will become unsuitable for bean cultivation by the year 2050. We further demonstrate reductions in yields of available common bean varieties in a field trial that is a climate analogue site for future predicted drought conditions. Little is kno

Updates on the Functions and Molecular Mechanisms of the Genes Involved in Aspergillus flavus Development and Biosynthesis of Aflatoxins.

Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus) is a ubiquitous and opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes invasive and non-invasive aspergillosis in humans and animals. This fungus is also capable of infecting a large number of agriculture crops (e.g., peanuts, maze, cotton seeds, rice, etc.), causing economic losses and posing serious food-safety concerns when these crops are contaminated with aflatoxins, the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens. In particular, A. flavus and aflatoxins are intensely studied, and they continue to receive considerable attention due to their detrimental effects on hum

Asparagus breeding: Future research needs for sustainable production.

Productivity in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is determined in part by (1) the selection of superior, adaptive genetics, (2) matching the selected genetics to the production environment, and (3) managing the crop production system in ways to maximize harvest potential that are sustainable, profitable, and efficient. Over the last 100 years, a considerable effort by asparagus researchers has gone into breeding superior genetic lines, testing those in numerous locations, and studying how asparagus responds to a multitude of inputs (fertilizers, irrigation, fungicides, herbicides, insectic…

Continuous Cropping Differentially Regulates Nitrogen Metabolism and Nodulation in Soybean Cultivars with Contrasting Continuous Cropping Tolerance Under Varied Nitrogen Levels.

Continuous cropping obstacles severely restrict soybean production; nitrogen application can alleviate continuous cropping obstacles. However, it remains unclear how nitrogen metabolism and nodulation differ between soybean cultivars with contrasting continuous cropping tolerance under varied nitrogen levels. In this study, two soybean cultivars, Liaodou 14 (L14, continuous-cropping-tolerant) and Liaodou 10 (L10, continuous-cropping-sensitive), were cultivated in a sand culture system. Three nitrogen levels, low (LN), medium (MN), and high (HN), were set with three soybean soil extract treatme

Concentration and chemical distribution of metals and arsenic under different typical Mediterranean cropping systems.

Soil under an intensive agriculture production could result in metal pollution if bad management practices are carried out. The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of cropping systems on soil metal(loid)s accumulation and speciation and to identify metal sources for each cropping system. To achieve these objectives, 40 soil samples from cereal, fruit, citrus and horticultural cropping areas and 15 samples from non-disturbed areas were collected. pH, salinity, particle size distribution, organic carbon and carbonate contents were analysed. In addition, total, DTPA-extractable and

A lipophilic cation protects crops against fungal pathogens by multiple modes of action.

The emerging resistance of crop pathogens to fungicides poses a challenge to food security and compels discovery of new antifungal compounds. Here, we show that mono-alkyl lipophilic cations (MALCs) inhibit oxidative phosphorylation by affecting NADH oxidation in the plant pathogens Zymoseptoria tritici, Ustilago maydis and Magnaporthe oryzae. One of these MALCs, consisting of a dimethylsulfonium moiety and a long alkyl chain (C18-SMe2+), also induces production of reactive oxygen species at the level of respiratory complex I, thus triggering fungal apoptosis. In addition, C18-SMe2+ activates
