BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 outbreak started in Taiwan in April 2022. The pandemic posed a challenge to pediatric emergency depa … nt pandemic (p < 0.001). Patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were likely to present with high fever, croup, dyspnea, febrile seizures, headache, dizziness, and myalgia (all p < 0.001). Four hundred and eleven (5.8%) patients were admitted; 25 (0.4%) patients needed intensive care, including 11 (44.0%) with encephalopathy or encephalitis. Three (0.04%) pa …

OBJECTIVE: to determine if there is a correlation between common otolaryngologic symptoms and presence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children.
METHODS: charts of 295 children presenting with suspicion of GERD were reviewed for presenting symptoms including: (1) airway symptoms: stertor, stridor, frequent cough, recurrent croup, wheezing, nasal congestion, obstructive apnea, blue spells, hoarseness, throat clearing; (2) feeding symptoms: wet burps, globus sensation, frequent emesis, dysphagia, choking/gagging, sore throat, halitosis, food refusal, stomach aches, arching, droolin…

Upper and lower respiratory infections are encountered commonly in the emergency department. Visits resulting from occurrences of respiratory disease account for 10% of all pediatric emergency department visits and 20% of all pediatric hospital admissions. Causes of upper airway infections include croup, epiglottitis, retropharyngeal abscess, cellulitis, pharyngitis, and peritonsillar abscesses. Lower airway viral and bacterial infections cause illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Signs and symptoms of upper and lower airway infections overlap, but the differentiation is important fo…

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in children may be classified as physiologic or pathologic, depending on its degree and consequences. There are many head and neck complications of GER in pediatric patients, but most numerous are the airway manifestations, including stridor, recurrent croup, exacerbation of subglottic stenosis, laryngeal irritation with or without laryngospasm, chronic cough, and obstructive apnea. Diagnosis may be difficult unless there is a high index of suspicion for GER and awareness of the concept of "silent" GER. We present the common pediatric airway manifestations of GER,…

Mechanical ventilation can produce multiple complications. The most important acute complications are mechanical problems (respirator failure, problems with the connections and circuit, incorrect parameters or alarms), problems in the airway (disconnection, extubation, mal-positioning of the endotracheal tube, leaks, nose erosions, obstruction of the endotracheal tube due to secretions or kinking, mainstem bronchus intubation, bronchospasm, postextubation croup), pulmonary complications (ventilator-induced lung injury with barotrauma, volutrauma and biotrauma), hemodynamic complications, nosoc…

Juvenile Xanthograuloma (JXG) is part of a diverse set of rare histiocytic disorders marked by infiltration of tissues with neoplastic myelomonocytic-derived cells. Molecular analysis has yielded new insights into the classification and management of histiocytic diseases. A three-year-old presented with atypical croup due to a localized subglottic histiocytic lesion mimicking subglottic hemangioma. The lesion was removed via tracheofissure. Pathology revealed a JXG-like histopathology with a rare KIF5B-ALK fusion gene. This is the first isolated ALK-positive lesion to be reported in this locat…

One hundred and three hospitalised urban pre-school Nigerian children aged 2 weeks to 4 years with various acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI), were studied prospectively over a 9- month period (August 1985 - April 1986). Overlapping seasonal peaks, corresponding to the rainy/early harmattan months of August through November were most noticeable for the two major viral ALRI syndromes namely, bronchiolitis and croup. The overall M:F ratio was 1.1:1, but a corresponding ratio of 1.6:1 was recorded in the infants. The commonest ALRI symptoms were cough, breathlessness and fever while c…

In a prospective study of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI), at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, 35 viral pathogens were identified by immunofluorescence (IF) techniques from 24 (68.6%) respiratory specimens from 35 hospitalised pre-school children. The respiratory diagnoses comprised croup, bronchiolitis, pneumonia and pleural effusion. The viral identifications comprised 14 (40.0%) of parainfluenza virus type 3, 10 (28.6%) of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), 5 (14.3%) of influenza virus type A, 4 (11.4%) of parainfluenza virus type 1 and 2 (5.7%) of influenza virus typ…

INTRODUCTION: Adverse birth outcomes have important consequences for future lung health. We evaluated patterns of respiratory health service … department (ED) visits from birth to 5 years were collected for asthma, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, croup, influenza, pneumonia, and other acute upper and lower respiratory tract infections (other URTI and other LRTI, respectively). Adjusted rate ratios were estimated for respiratory ED visits and hospitalizations for adverse birth outcomes using the ap …

BACKGROUND: Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are amongst the commonest reasons for paediatric care, yet national evidence from Lat … of all records and had the largest absolute burden (pooled rate approximately 21 000 per 100 000). Croup/epiglottitis represented only 2.1% of all contacts but 11.3% of URTI hospitalizations, with a hospitalization enrichment ratio of 5.44.
CONCLUSIONS: Colombia's paediatric URTI utilization did not simply recover after the pandemic shock; it reconfig …

In the present study, 560 buffaloes from a private animal farm in Giza Governorate were examined over one year for scabies infestation. The results showed that 466 Buffaloes (83.2%) were infested with two mange mites; Psoroptes natalensis and Sarcoptes scabiei. The highest prevalence rate of infestation was during winter (90.4%), and lowest was in summer (71.4%). The infestation on females was 90.4%, while on males was 80.8%. The mites were predominant on the withers, lumber, back, croup and the external angle of ilium. Buffaloes more than five years old were highly infested than smaller ones,…

Acute epiglottitis, a fulminating infection in the supraglottic tissue due to Haemophilus influenzae type B can cause relentlessly progressive airway obstruction in infants, children and sometimes in adults. Rapid infection and swelling of the epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds causes airway obstruction which can be relieved by endotracheal intubation. The systemic infection and septicaemia must be treated by the appropriate intravenous antibiotics. Acute epiglottitis must be differentiated from viral laryngotracheitis or "croup" which is very common and from pseudo-membranous bacterial trache…
