OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present the outcome of patients treated with salvage cryotherapy after radiotherapy for prostate cancer at one institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients treated between 2007 and 2013 with transperineal cryotherapy for biopsy-verified local recurrence after radiotherapy were investigated. An external reviewer retrieved outcome data retrospectively from medical records. Complications were graded according to the Clavien classification. One patient with less than 1 year of follow-up was excluded from the analysis of side-effects.

Cryotherapy of the peripheral avascular retina in selected cases of retinopathy of prematurity has been shown to reduce the incidence of posterior retinal detachment, retinal fold involving the macula, and retrolental tissue. Although exudative retinal detachments have been described after cryotherapy during scleral buckling procedures, to our knowledge, this observation has not been reported after cryotherapy in retinopathy of prematurity. Complete closure of retinal neovascularisation due to proliferative sickle cell retinopathy was achieved in 28 'sea fans' (areas of neovascularisation) in 9 eyes of 9 patients by means of a triple freeze-thaw technique. However, 2 eyes developed subsequent rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, presumably related to vitreous traction on necrotic retina. We therefore recommend photocoagulation as the best treatment of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy. If opacities in the media prevent photocoagulation, a single freeze-thaw cycle is preferable.

Hematochezia can result from a variety of gastrointestinal and systemic causes, including malignancy. We present a 74-year-old woman with persistent rectal bleeding due to malignant invasion of the rectosigmoid colon from recurrent primary peritoneal psammocarcinoma. As the patient was a poor surgical candidate, she was treated with endoscopic spray cryotherapy across 3 sessions, achieving durable hemostasis. This case highlights the broader utility of endoscopic spray cryotherapy as a feasible, palliative option for rectal malignancy-related bleeding when surgery is not a viable option.

This study examined the effects of liquid nitrogen vapor on osteogenesis in the rabbit femur. Cryotweezers made of porous nickel titanium alloy (nitinol or NiTi) obtained by self-propagating high temperature synthesis were used in this experiment.
