Why do Thoracic Radiologists Need to Know About Cultural Competence (and What Is it Anyway)?

Thoracic radiologists meet patients when performing procedures such as transthoracic computed tomography-guided biopsy and during shared decision-making required for lung cancer screening. Both patients and thoracic radiologists are influenced by their cultures, which affect their health care interactions. While culture may relate to religion or ethnicity of individuals, it also includes multiple additional characteristics such as gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, education, occupation, age, disability, and more. Patients from different cultures undergo similar medical procedur

Spatial configuration of cultural landscape facilities in Shandong's Yellow River corridor: a rural living circle perspective.

The rural cultural landscapes in the Yellow River Basin, as an important part of the blue-green infrastructure, not only provide ecological services and public spaces, but also carry the function of regional cultural inheritance. The spatial layout of rural cultural landscapes deeply aligns with the multi-level living circles of residents, and has a significant impact on the organization of landscape spaces and social ecological resilience in rural areas. This study took 14,502 administrative villages in 25 counties (cities and districts) along the Yellow River in Shandong Province as the rese

Culturally safe family-centered early intervention services: perspectives from parents and service providers of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

This study explores the characteristics of cultural safety in Family-Centered Early Intervention services for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families (FCEI-DHH). Perspectives of culturally and ethnically diverse families who have young DHH children and service providers in pediatric DHH services were gathered through online surveys. Quantitative analyses examined the influence of geographical location and parent self-identity (Deaf, Indigenous, racialized, marginalized (DIRM), and/or belonging to a dominant/privileged group) on aspects of FCEI services. Parents reported a high o

Global practices in adapting cognitive behavioral therapy for ethnoracial populations with substance use disorders: a scoping review of adaptation strategies, treatment outcomes, and geographic gaps.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs), yet standard protocols may have limited cultural relevance for ethnoracially diverse populations. Cultural adaptation may enhance the fit and relevance of interventions; however, the scope, characteristics, and outcomes of ethnoracial adaptations of CBT for SUD remain underexamined. This scoping review mapped the global evidence on ethnoracially adapted CBT for SUDs, including strategies, implementation characteristics, and treatment outcomes. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guideli

BACKGROUND: The upper face (forehead, brows, temples, and periorbital region) plays a central role in overall facial expression and perceived age. Treatment approaches must evolve beyond traditional Western norms to accommodate ethnic and cultural diversity in anatomy and aesthetic preferences. OBJECTIVE: To review current knowledge of upper-face morphology and aging patterns across diverse populations and provide guidance for culturally sensitive assessment and rejuvenation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An expert panel of dermatologists, oculoplastic, and plastic surgeons reviewed anthropometric

Listening to patients: cultural and linguistic barriers to health care access.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Full access to medical care includes cultural and linguistic access as well as financial access. We sought to identify cultural and linguistic characteristics of low-income, ethnic minority patients' recent encounters with health care organizations that impede, and those that increase, health care access. METHODS: We conducted four focus groups with ethnically homogeneous African American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander patients. Study participants were "walked" through the stages of a medical encounter and asked to identify physician and staff behavi

Pushing for miracles, pulling away from risk: An ethnographic analysis of the force dynamics at Senior Summer Camps in Sweden.

With an ageing population and a discourse of active ageing guiding welfare policies, initiatives to engage older people in health promoting activities have been established. One growing phenomenon is Senior Summer Camps, arranged all over Sweden in beautiful natural environments close to water. Their main purpose is to enable older people to participate in outdoor activities in an institutionalized setting. Although many professionals consider acts of infantilization as highly inappropriate, research has shown that still this is frequently done in institutional settings targeting older people.

Cross-cultural issues in forensic psychiatry training.

OBJECTIVE: Forensic psychiatry was officially recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties in the 1990's. In 1994, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) gave its first written examination to certify forensic psychiatrists. In 1996, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) began to officially accredit one-year residency experiences in forensic psychiatry, which follow a 4-year residency in general psychiatry. The extra year of training, colloquially known as a fellowship, is required for candidates who wish to receive certific

The place of Germanic language and culture in Freud's discovery of psychoanalysis between 1895 and 1900.

Freud's self-analysed dreams between 1895 and 1900 point out: His attachment to his German mother tongue and the use of its peculiarities to represent certain polymorphous perverse fantasies of childhood (voyeurism, masochistic mostly); the recourse to living foreign languages (English and French mostly) to name the parts of the self both left alive and foreign to the consciousness; the use of Latin and Greek words to constitute one scientific universal language fitting to the knowledge of the unconscious. For Freud, the German culture is the culture to which he belongs; the antique Mediterran

Taijin Kyofusho: diagnostic and cultural issues in Japanese psychiatry.

Taijin Kyofusho or 'anthrophobia' is a Japanese culture-specific disgnostic label for the presenting problems of various fear reactions in interpersonal situations. The starting point of the present study was accumulating studies on Japanese cases of Taijin Kyofusho and the assertion in Japanese psychiatry that the symptom complex called Taijin kyofusho is Japanese culture-bound. In light of previous works on culture-bound disorders, the present study examines whether or not American mental health professionals could diagnose Japanese case descriptions of Taijin Kyofusho and what kinds of labe

The introduction of genetic counseling in Ethiopia: Results of a training workshop and lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have steadily increased as a cause of worldwide disability and mortality with a concomitant decrease in disease burden from communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional conditions. Congenital anomalies, the most common NCD affecting children, have recently become the fifth leading cause of under-five mortality worldwide, ahead of other conditions such as malaria, neonatal sepsis and malnutrition. Genetic counseling has been shown to be an effective method to decrease the impact of congenital anomalies and genetic condit

Depression in Brazil and other Latin American countries.

Minor psychiatric disorders, specially depression and anxiety, are highly prevalent in Latin American (LA) countries including Brazil. Some important social factors specially present in medium and large LA cities such as violence, migration and homelessness probably contribute to large number of people suffering of different forms of depressive and anxiety disorders. Latin America was colonized about 500 years ago by Spain and Portugal and their cultural identity is still very much influenced by Ibero-American attitudes and beliefs. Probably as a consequence of this situation, depression is us

Substance abuse treatment: cultural barriers in the Asian-American community.

Asians constitute the largest growing minority in the United States. However, inaccurate perceptions and stereotypes continue to mask a full understanding of the state of knowledge regarding their alcohol and other drug abuse. Much of the existing research has continued this trend by categorizing Asians as "others" or persisting in its attempts to explain low incidence rates by investigating metabolic phenomena. More recent community-based studies have shown alarming incidence rates of specific substance abuse among different Asian ethnic groups. Asian heterogeneity and cultural barriers have

A hierarchical bayesian analysis of parasite prevalence and sociocultural outcomes: The role of structural racism and sanitation infrastructure.

OBJECTIVES: We conduct a revaluation of the Thornhill and Fincher research project on parasites using finely-resolved geographic data on parasite prevalence, individual-level sociocultural data, and multilevel Bayesian modeling. In contrast to the evolutionary psychological mechanisms linking parasites to human behavior and cultural characteristics proposed by Thornhill and Fincher, we offer an alternative hypothesis that structural racism and differential access to sanitation systems drive both variation in parasite prevalence and differential behaviors and cultural characteristics. METHODS:…
