Multiplex MinION sequencing suggests enteric adenovirus F41 genetic diversity comparable to pre-COVID-19 era.

Human adenovirus F41 causes acute gastroenteritis in children, and has recently been associated with an apparent increase in paediatric hepatitis of unknown aetiology in the UK, with further cases reported in multiple countries. Relatively little is known about the genetic diversity of adenovirus F41 in UK children; and it is unclear what, if any, impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on viral diversity in the UK. Methods that allow F41 to be sequenced from clinical samples without the need for viral culture are required to provide the genomic data to address these questions. Therefore, we eval

Recombinant and epitope-based vaccines on the road to the market and implications for vaccine design and production.

Novel vaccination approaches based on rational design of B- and T-cell epitopes - epitope-based vaccines - are making progress in the clinical trial pipeline. The epitope-focused recombinant protein-based malaria vaccine (termed RTS,S) is a next-generation approach that successfully reached phase-III trials, and will potentially become the first commercial vaccine against a human parasitic disease. Progress made on methods such as recombinant DNA technology, advanced cell-culture techniques, immunoinformatics and rational design of immunogens are driving the development of these novel concepts

Photodynamic treatment has chondroprotective effects on articular cartilage.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling joint disease for which there is currently no cure. It is characterized by the destruction of articular cartilage. One strategy that is being explored for protecting the cartilage in OA is the administration of transforming growth factor-beta, which in vitro antagonizes cartilage degradation initiated by catabolic stimulants such as interleukin-1 (IL-1). The problems associated with selective delivery of the growth factor to chondrocytes, undesirable side-effects on joint tissues, and short biological half-life have led us to explore modalities aimed at activ

Cardiovascular disorders in Africa.

The availability of basic and reliable data on cardiovascular problems in Africans is limited and this hinders the presentation of a comprehensive review of the subject. Nevertheless, there is a strong suggestion that the spectrum and pattern of cardiovascular disorders in Africa is rapidly becoming indistinguishable from that observed in developed countries. The classic risk factors appear to be on the rise and smoking may attain levels equal to or exceeding those in many developed countries. Infectious and inflammatory cardiovascular conditions may still be the most common, although limitati

Ethical governance of artificial intelligence in digital health for Indigenous populations: A narrative review and conceptual framework.

Artificial intelligence (AI) integration into digital health care delivery is rapidly expanding and is increasingly viewed as a promising approach for improving access to care, strengthening diagnostic decision-making, and addressing persistent health inequities experienced by Indigenous populations. Although AI-enabled digital health applications offer potential benefits such as scalability, personalization, and improved clinical decision support, they also raise critical ethical concerns related to equitable implementation, culturally grounded design, representative data usage accountability

Physical contact under surveillance: cultural norms, visibility and teacher self-regulation ın Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Physical contact in physical education represents a complex pedagogical practice shaped not only by instructional needs but also by broader social, cultural, and professional expectations. In contexts where bodily interaction may be subject to social interpretation and potential misunderstanding, teachers continuously negotiate appropriate forms of pedagogical touch. Although previous research has primarily examined physical contact through risk and no-touch discourses, less attention has been paid to how teachers negotiate pedagogical touch within broader conditions of visibility

Comparison of lipooligosaccharides from human challenge strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The alarming rise of antibiotic resistance and the emergence of new vaccine technologies have increased the focus on vaccination to control gonorrhea. Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains FA1090 and MS11 have been used in challenge studies in human males. We used negative-ion MALDI-TOF MS to profile intact lipooligosaccharide (LOS) from strains MS11mkA, MS11mkC, FA1090 A23a, and FA1090 1-81-S2. The MS11mkC and 1-81-S2 variants were isolated from male volunteers infected with MS11mkA and A23a, respectively. LOS profiles were obtained after purification using the classical phenol water extraction metho

Optimising technology to measure functional vision, mobility and service outcomes for people with low vision or blindness: protocol for a prospective cohort study in Australia and Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists assess the functional vision and O&M skills of people with mobility problems, usually relating to low vision or blindness. There are numerous O&M assessment checklists but no measures that reduce qualitative assessment data to a single comparable score suitable for assessing any O&M client, of any age or ability, in any location. Functional measures are needed internationally to align O&M assessment practices, guide referrals, profile O&M clients, plan appropriate services and evaluate outcomes from O&M programmes (eg, long cane training

Polymer-iodine inactivation of the human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: Hospital and laboratory equipment that come in contact with body fluids of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are potentially infective and require special measures for decontamination and disposal. Human immunodeficiency virus is sensitive to several chemicals but requires a continuous exposure to the disinfectant to effective inactivation. Polymers have the capacity to release viricidal chemicals in a sustained fashion for prolonged periods of time, and may be used to coat patient care items before their use. Iodine was chosen because of its universal antimicrobial

CADEM: Species-level detection of mycobacterial cfDNA via CRISPR for pulmonary disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) present significant clinical challenges due to overlapping symptoms and different treatments. In particular, accurate identification of NTM species such as Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) is essential, as these species show drug susceptibility profiles that differ markedly from MTB. However, conventional culture-based diagnostics are time-consuming, and current molecular assays often lack resolution and rely heavily on sputum specimens.

Exploring the nutritional, phytochemical, and functional potential of African star apple (Chrysophyllum albidum) and its byproducts: A review of bioactivities and food applications.

The African Star Apple (Chrysophyllum albidum, ASA) is an underutilized tropical fruit indigenous to West and Central Africa, known for its rich nutritional profile and phytochemical diversity. Traditionally consumed fresh, the pulp, peel, and seed contain substantial amounts of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, including catechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin and related polyphenols. Despite its widespread cultural acceptance and documented therapeutic potential, large-scale utilization of ASA remains limited due to rapid postharvest losses, inadequat

Advances in rapid microbiological testing for animal diseases: A review.

Animal pathogenic microorganisms destabilize livestock economies and jeopardize human health through zoonotic transmission and foodborne illness. Traditional culture-based detection methods, while standardized, are time-consuming and labor-intensive, often failing to meet the urgent need for rapid on-site or point-of-care (POC) monitoring required to prevent disease outbreaks and manage animal health effectively. By integrating latest research advances, this study reviews advances in rapid detection technologies for animal pathogens, including the evolution of nucleic acid amplification strate

Development and Validation of a Mobile Game for Culturally Sensitive Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education in Tanzania: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 3 out of 20 children experience sexual abuse before the age of 18 years. Educating children about sexual abuse and prevention is an evidence-based strategy that is recommended for ending child sexual abuse. Digital games are increasingly being used to influence healthy behaviors in children and could be an efficient and friendly approach to educating children about sexual abuse prevention. However, little is known on the best way to develop a culturally sensitive game that targets children in Africa-where sexual education is still taboo-that would be engaging, effective,

Which good practice exists for policymaking under uncertainty? An interdisciplinary review with relevance for health technology assessment (HTA).

Appropriate policymaking under uncertainty can lead to better decisions around how constrained resources are used. Although approaches from the technical sciences can provide robust, generalisable uncertainty estimations, they cannot account for the varying social, economic, and cultural contexts in which policies are made and implemented. We evaluated current health technology assessment (HTA) practice, finding limited consideration of social science perspectives, which may be inadequate for policies that influence behaviour, cross jurisdictions, or deal with multiple vested interests.
