Evaluation of Sargassum ilicifolium as a functional feed additive to improve growth, haematology and disease resistance in Catla catla.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of brown seaweed (Sargassum ilicifolium) supplementation on growth performance, blood parameters and digestive enzyme activity in Catla catla for 60 days. Three hundred fingerlings were acclimatized for a week and then stocked into four experimental groups with triplicates (25 fish/aquarium), including T0: control group and three treatments supplemented with brown seaweed (T1: 3% BSW, T2: 5% BSW and T3: 7% BSW). Fingerlings were fed at 4% of their total body weight, provided twice a day. The results showed that T3 (7% BSW) treatment had th

Optimization of main components of artificial compound feed (ACF) for Hippocampus kuda based on the synergistic expression of biological clock genes.

Feed is very important for fish farming. The appropriate composition and proportion of feed ingredients can promote the growth of fish, maintain normal physiology and behavior, and even improve the resistance ability to disease and stress, etc. The core of artificial compound feed (ACF) is the composition and proportion of lipid, protein, and carbohydrate, which are also the main nutritional components required by fish. Appropriate levels and ratios can promote fish growth and save costs, and the improper would affect the biological clock systems of fish, leading to metabolic abnormalities. Th

Proposal to synonymize Neoplagioporus Shimazu, 1990 with Urorchis Ozaki, 1927; taxonomic revision and the description of Urorchis takahaya n. sp.

Urorchis Ozaki, 1927 and Neoplagioporus Shimazu, 1990 (Digenea: Opecoelidae: Sphaerostomatinae) comprise species parasitic in freshwater fishes of eastern Asia, although the status of these genera is questionable. We revised these genera, primarily using evidence from a molecular phylogeny based on nuclear ribosomal DNA, including new sequences of four known and one new species. Urorchis was part of the clade of Neoplagioporus species, rendering the genus Neoplagioporus paraphyletic. Based on this evidence, we regard Neoplagioporus as a junior synonym of Urorchis, and amend its taxonomic diagn

Suitability of invasive gobies as paratenic hosts for acanthocephalans of the genus Pomphorhynchus sp.

Ponto-Caspian gobies became highly abundant in many regions outside their native distribution range (e.g. in the Rhine River system). In the newly invaded habitats, the parasite communities of the invasive gobies are characterized by a lower species richness compared to their native range. Interestingly, acanthocephalans of the genus Pomphorhynchus are highly abundant, although they do not become mature and mostly remain encapsulated in the abdominal cavity as preadults. Thus, gobiids could either represent a dead-end host for Pomphorhynchus sp. declining its population (dilution effect) or ac

New Insights into the Mechanism by Which the Pituitary Gland Copes with Hypoxia Stress Based on a Transcriptomic Analysis of Megalobrama amblycephala.

Hypoxia is a common environmental stressor in aquatic ecosystems, and during the cultivation process, Megalobrama amblycephala is prone to death because it is hypoxia-intolerant, which brings huge economic losses to farmers. The pituitary gland is a crucial endocrine gland in fish, and it is mainly involved in the secretion, storage, and regulation of hormones. In the present study, we compared the transcriptional responses to serious hypoxia in the pituitary gland among hypoxia-sensitive (HS) and hypoxia-tolerant (HT) M. amblycephala and a control group that received a normal oxygen supply (C

FIRST REPORTS OF LIGULA INTESTINALIS AND A SCHISTOCEPHALUS SP. INFECTING SMALL-BODIED FISH IN NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.

Morphological characteristics and DNA sequencing were used to identify plerocercoids of a Schistocephalus sp. infecting slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) from northern New Brunswick and plerocercoids of Ligula intestinalis infecting blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus) in Fundy National Park (FNP, New Brunswick). To our knowledge, no previous publications documented either cestode from New Brunswick, Canada. Blacknose dace represent a new host record for L. intestinalis. Identifications were made based on the presence or absence of segmentation and sequencing partial nicotinamide adenine dinuc

Parental exposure to CdSe/ZnS QDs affects cartilage development in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) offspring.

Cartilage development is a sensitive process that is easily disturbed by environmental toxins. In this study, the toxicity of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots on the skeleton of the next generation (F1) was evaluated using rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) as model animals. Four-month-old sexually mature parental rare minnows (F0) were selected and treated with 0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 nmol/L CdSe/ZnS quantum dots for 4 days. Embryos of F1 generation rare minnows were obtained by artificial insemination. The results showed that with increasing maternal quantum dots exposure, the body length of F1 embryos

Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity Testing and the RTgill-W1 Cell Line as In Vitro Models for Whole-Effluent Toxicity (WET) Testing: An In Vitro/In Vivo Comparison of Chemicals Relevant for WET Testing.

The fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) fish embryo acute toxicity (FET) test was compared to the fish gill cells (RTgill-W1) in vitro assay and to the fish larvae acute toxicity test to evaluate their sensitivity for whole-effluent toxicity (WET) testing. The toxicity of 12 chemicals relevant for WET testing was compared as proof of principle. The concentrations lethal to 50% of a population (LC50) of embryos were compared to those in fish larvae and to the 50% effect concentration (EC50) in RTgill-W1 cells from previous literature. Along with traditional FET endpoints (coagulation, somite d

Thyroid disruption and developmental toxicity caused by Cd2+ in Schizopygopsis younghusbandi larvae.

In recent years, the adverse effects of cadmium (Cd2+) on aquatic systems have attracted much attention because Cd2+ can induce endocrine disorders and toxicity in aquatic organisms at low levels. However, its effects on the thyroid system in native fish in Lhasa are still unclear. In the present study, Schizopygopsis younghusbandi larvae were exposed to Cd2+ (0.25, 2.5, 25 or 250 μg/L) for 7 or 14 days to determine its toxic effects on thyroid function. The results showed that whole-body total T4 and T3 levels were significantly decreased, which was accompanied by the significant upregulation

Human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini (Trematoda, Opisthorchiidae) in Central Myanmar: New records of adults and metacercariae identified by morphology and molecular analysis.

Opisthorchis-like metacercariae were found in cyprinoid fish, Puntius brevis, bought from markets in the Bago region, Central Myanmar. Adult worms recovered from experimentally-infected hamsters resembled Opisthorchis viverrini. DNA was extracted from adults and metacercariae. A portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) regions were amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and then sequenced. The sequences confirmed that the flukes were O. viverrini. In phylogenetic analyses, sequences of O. viverrini, including our new

Hemozoin is a product of heme detoxification in the gut of the most medically important species of the family Opisthorchiidae.

Many species of trematodes such as Schistosoma spp., Fasciola hepatica and Echinostoma trivolvis are blood-feeding parasites. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on the feeding habits of the family Opisthorchiidae (Opisthorchis felineus, Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis). Previously, histological studies of O. felineus and C. sinensis revealed some dark stained material in their gut lumen. In this study we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the gut contents of three members of the family Opisthorchiidae (O. felineus, O. viverrini and C. sinensis). Using transmission electron m

Analysis of potential factors allowing coexistence in a sexual/asexual minnow complex.

The northern redbelly dace (Chrosomus eos) and the finescale dace (C. neogaeus) have hybridized to produce an all-female, asexual hybrid (C. eos-neogaeus) that reproduces by sperm-limited parthenogenesis (gynogenesis). However, in this system, gynogenesis is not 100 % efficient; triploid females are occasionally formed which reproduce as sexuals, producing nuclear males and females of the paternal species (generally C. eos). Thus, the asexual lineage continually produces occasional males that can serve as a sperm source. Because (almost) all hybrid offspring are females, the hybrid population

Soft tissue digestion of Paradiplozoon vaalense for SEM of sclerites and simultaneous molecular analysis.

Classification of most monogeneans is primarily based on size, shape, and arrangement of haptoral sclerites. These structures are often obscured or misinterpreted when studied using light microscopy, leading to confusion regarding defining characters. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has predominantly been used to study haptoral sclerites in smaller monogeneans, focusing on hooks and anchors. In the Diplozoidae, SEM has not been used to study haptoral sclerites. Using new and modified techniques, the sclerites of diplozoids collected in South Africa were successfully studied using SEM. The d

[Effect of Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda, Caryophyllidea) upon activity of digestive enzymes in bream].

The activities of the main digestive hydrolases were comparatively studied in bream infected and noninfected with cestodes Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas, 1781). It was shown that enzyme activities are distributed in the fish intestine in an irregular manner; the gradient of protease and lipase activities along the gut is presented. Following the infection of bream by cestodes, the activities of the studied enzymes decreased and the percentages of activities of various proteinase subclasses changed. No relation between the distribution of worms along the intestine and the levels of activities

Phenotypic modification of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) infected with Ligula intestinalis L. (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea).

In European freshwater, cyprinid fish may be heavily infected by plerocercoids of the pseudophyllidea cestode Ligula intestinalis (L.). During their development, these parasites grow rapidly to a large size in the fish's body cavity, characteristically distending the abdomen. In this study, the influence of this tapeworm on roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) morphology was analyzed. Forty-five infected and 45 uninfected roach were collected from the Lavernose-Lacasse gravel pit in Toulouse, south western France and examined for 40 morphological measurements to study phenotypic modification of the body

Myxobolus infection of the gills of common bream (Abramis brama L.) in Lake Balaton and in the Kis-Balaton reservoir, Hungary.

During a five-year survey including studies on the parasite fauna of bream (Abramis brama), four gill-parasitic Myxobolus species (M. bramae, M. hungaricus, M. impressus and M. macrocapsularis) were recorded in a total of 313 breams from Lake Balaton. The commonest species, M. bramae showed a prevalence of 33%, while the other species occurred sporadically. Myxobolus bramae and M. macrocapsularis infected the tips of the gill filaments and caused both intralamellar and interlamellar infection. Intralamellar plasmodia of small size developed in the capillary network of the gill lamellae whereas

Map of retinal position onto the cross section of the optic pathway of goldfish.

The position of a retinal cell is defined by the two polar coordinates: r, the distance from the optic disc, and theta, the angular (or clock-face) position. Axons of similar theta value were labeled by the punctate application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to optic axons in the retina, and axons of similar r-value were labeled by the application of this same marker to a tectal fascicle. Labeled axons were traced in serial transverse sections of the optic pathway from the retina to the tectum to learn the map of the retinal surface onto the cross section of the pathway. Retinas were flat-mou
