Tumors of the lacrimal sac are rare. Benign papillomas comprise approximately 40% of all neoplasms of the lacrimal drainage system. They often present insidiously with symptoms of dacryostenosis or dacryocystitis. A case is reported of combined coliform and anaerobic bacterial infection of the lacrimal sac, a condition of which there is only one other published case report. In addition, a literature review is presented of the bacteriology of acute dacryocystitis as it applies to this case. Recommendations for the microbiological investigation and management of acute dacryocystitis are made.

This paper presents 4 cases in which the punctum had been temporarily occluded with tissue adhesive, still showing toxic tissue reaction years later. Abscess, dacryocystitis, dacryocystitis with dacryolithiasis, dacryocellulitis and polyposis were found. In the light of these findings and the relevant literature-especially with regard to late injuries-it is not advisable to use tissue adhesive, at least not for the purpose of punctal occlusion.

The neonate is an obligate nasal breather and any form of nasal obstruction causes respiratory distress during feeding and sleeping. We report two patients with unusual causes of respiratory distress secondary to nasolacrimal duct cysts. The failure of the lacrimal duct to perforate at the distal end results in dacryocystitis and cyst formation. Removal of the nasal wall of the cyst resolves the obstruction and the dacryocystitis. The nasolacrimal duct cyst is an unusual, but readily treated, cause of neonatal respiratory distress.

Congenital dacryocystocoele occurs when the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus in the newborn has concomitant blocks at the level of the junction of the common canaliculus with the lacrimal sac and at the distal end of the nasolacrimal duct. This results in a typical pink or blue swelling in the region of the medial canthus. Spontaneous resolution is common, although dacryocystitis may supervene.
