Extratympanic electrocochleography and pure-tone audiometry were performed in unilateral Ménière's disease patients before and 1, 2 and 3 hours after oral administration of glycerol. The mean electrocochleographic response from 12 recordings at 80 dBnHL click stimuli was determined to obtain stable values. The electrocochleographic response during the glycerol dehydration test was compared with that in normal subjects (28 ears). We describe transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurements in a collodion baby suffering from severe hypernatraemic dehydration and hypothermia, who required intravenous fluid therapy in a special incubator. The TEWL values 4 days after birth were abnormally high compared with normal infants of the same age. The TEWL measurements returned towards normal within the first month, in parallel with the improvement of both the skin signs and the electrolyte and fluid balance.

Excessively concentrated milk formula was administered accidentally to five newborn infants. Diarrhea, dehydration, hypernatremia, and hyperosmolality were present in all of them. The death certificates and necropsy reports of the 1115 Sheffield infants who died under 2 years of age in 1969-78 were examined. This study showed the apparent disappearance of deaths with hypernatraemia and in particular deaths presenting as cot deaths. The fall in incidence may be as much the result of an intensive local campaign on child care and infant feeding as of the change in the composition of dried milk for baby feeding.

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess clinical profile of neonates with hypernatremic dehydration (HD) and identify risk factors associated with acute kidney injury (AKI).
