Refeeding after a 24-hour fasting deepens NREM sleep in a time-dependent manner.

Sleep/wake cycle is regulated by a variety of neuropeptides in the hypothalamus, a brain region that also regulates energy homeostasis and feeding behavior. Since circadian rhythms are affected by energy metabolism and feeding condition, we investigated whether changes in feeding regimen would influence sleep/wake parameters and body temperature. We monitored sleep and body temperature across three days of baseline (day 1), fasting (day 2), and refeeding (day 3) conditions under ordinary ambient temperature and employed different refeeding schedules. Refeeding at ZT1 following the 24-h fasting

[Steroidogenesis in patients with various adrenal and gonadal dysfunctions].

The paper deals with the results of investigations of steroidogenesis in patients with ACTH-dependent Icenko-Cushing's disease (CD), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and stromal hyperthecosis (SH). Along with the traditional methods of evaluating the activity of steroid-producing glands (diurnal variations of steroid hormones and their precursors in the peripheral blood, their mean daily concentrations), the authors used a simultaneous selective catheterization technique for adrenal and ovarian veins. No pronounced circadian rhythms were revealed in most of the steroids measured in patien

Sevoflurane Induces Coherent Slow-Delta Oscillations in Rats.

Although general anesthetics are routinely administered to surgical patients to induce loss of consciousness, the mechanisms underlying anesthetic-induced unconsciousness are not fully understood. In rats, we characterized changes in the extradural EEG and intracranial local field potentials (LFPs) within the prefrontal cortex (PFC), parietal cortex (PC), and central thalamus (CT) in response to progressively higher doses of the inhaled anesthetic sevoflurane. During induction with a low dose of sevoflurane, beta/low gamma (12-40 Hz) power increased in the frontal EEG and PFC, PC and CT LFPs,

Surgical ablation of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in children and young adults.

From 1988 to 1991, nine patients with structural normal heart, aged 10 to 23 (median 13 years), Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome patients were operated at National Taiwan University Hospital. The diagnosis was established by surface electrocardiograms recorded during sinus rhythm and tachycardia, and by complete cardiac electrophysiologic studies. The location of accessory pathways (AP) were: 4 left lateral, 3 right lateral, 1 right posteroseptal and 1 right anteroseptal AV groove. In all 6 patients with manifest WPW syndrome, the location of AP could be correctly predicted by the surface EKG de

Characterization of seizure-like events recorded in vivo in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). Spontaneous recurrent discharge episodes are displayed in Rett-related seizures as in other types of epilepsies. The aim of this paper is to investigate the seizure-like event (SLE) and inter-SLE states in a female MeCP2-deficient mouse model of Rett syndrome and compare them to those found in other spontaneous recurrent epilepsy models. The study was performed on a small population of female MeCP2-deficient mice using telemetric local field potential (LFP) rec

Neural Correlates of Music Listening and Recall in the Human Brain.

Previous neuroimaging studies have identified various brain regions that are activated by music listening or recall. However, little is known about how these brain regions represent the time course and temporal features of music during listening and recall. Here we analyzed neural activity in different brain regions associated with music listening and recall using electrocorticography recordings obtained from 10 epilepsy patients of both genders implanted with subdural electrodes. Electrocorticography signals were recorded while subjects were listening to familiar instrumental music or recalli

Target-related parietal P3 and medial frontal theta index the genetic risk for problematic substance use.

Theoretical and empirical work suggests that problematic substance use (PSU) is associated with individual differences in prefrontal cortex activity. While research has strongly linked parietal P3 amplitude reduction (P3AR) to genetic risk for problematic substance use, few studies have tested whether prefrontal EEG measures are sensitive to this genetic liability. In addition to P3, oddball target detection tasks elicit medial frontal theta power, reflecting attentional allocation, and parietal delta, indexing decision making or stimulus-response link updating. Midfrontal theta and parietal d

EEG theta activity and pain insensitivity in self-injurious borderline patients.

The principal aim of this study was to investigate possible neurophysiological underpinnings of self-injurious behavior in women with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Pain report and EEG power spectrum density during a laboratory pain procedure, a 4-min 10 degrees C cold pressor test (CPT), were compared among four groups; female inpatients with BPD who do (BPD-P group, n = 22) and do not (BPD-NP group, n = 19) report pain during self-injury, female inpatients with major depression (n = 15), and normal women (n = 20). The BPD-NP group reported less pain intensity during the CPT compared

Differential changes in visual and auditory event-related oscillations in dementia with Lewy bodies.

OBJECTIVE: Aside from the cognitive impairment, patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) have a high frequency of visual hallucinations and a number of other vision-related symptoms, whereas auditory hallucinations are less frequent. To better understand the differential dysfunction of the visual network in DLB, we compared auditory and visual event-related potentials and oscillations in patients with DLB. METHODS: Event-related potentials elicited by visual and auditory oddball tasks were recorded in 23 patients with DLB and 22 healthy controls and analyzed in time and time-frequency do

Anterior cingulate activity to monetary loss and basal ganglia activity to monetary gain uniquely contribute to the feedback negativity.

OBJECTIVE: The feedback negativity (FN) is an event-related potential that differentiates unfavorable versus favorable outcomes. Although thought to reflect error-related activity within the anterior cingulate cortex, recent work indicates the FN may also reflect reward-related activity that has been linked to the basal ganglia. To date, it remains unclear how to reconcile these conflicting perspectives. METHODS: We decomposed the FN by applying time-frequency analysis to isolate activity unique to monetary losses and gains. The FN was recorded from 84 individuals during a laboratory gambling

Tonic activity level in the right prefrontal cortex predicts individuals' risk taking.

Human risk taking is characterized by a large amount of individual heterogeneity. In this study, we applied resting-state electroencephalography, which captures stable individual differences in neural activity, before subjects performed a risk-taking task. Using a source-localization technique, we found that the baseline cortical activity in the right prefrontal cortex predicts individual risk-taking behavior. Individuals with higher baseline cortical activity in this brain area display more risk aversion than do other individuals. This finding demonstrates that neural characteristics that are

Electroencephalography.

Notwithstanding recent advances in neuroimaging, EEG remains a major technique for investigation of the brain. Its main applications are in assessment of cerebral function rather than for detecting structural abnormalities. The principal clinical applications are in epilepsy, states of altered consciousness including postanoxic and traumatic coma, the parasomnias, dementias, toxic confusional states, cerebral infections, and various other encephalopathies. Abnormalities in EEG reflect general pathophysiological processes, raised intracranial pressure, cerebral anoxia, or oedema, epileptogenesi

Influence of heart rate and atrial transport on left ventricular volume and function: relation to hemodynamic changes produced by supraventricular arrhythmia.

The response of the left ventricle to pacing-induced changes in heart rate and the atrioventricular (A-V) relation was examined with equilibrium gated radionuclide ventriculography in 20 patients who had normal ventricular function after surgery for recurrent supraventricular tachycardia. In 10 patients count-derived left ventricular ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume and stroke volume were measured during sinus rhythm and during atrial pacing at 120, 140 and 160 beats/min. In the other 10 patients similar determinations were made during sequential A-V and simultaneous ventricular and atr

[Topographical distribution of slow sleep rhythms in children withdrawn from barbiturates (author's transl)].

An automatic analysis of the topographical distribution of slow sleep rhythms was performed and 53 night sleep recordings obtained from 10 children chronically treated by barbiturates; a barbiturate withdrawal was undertaken in these children to eliminate the side effects of the drug likely to impair their development or their behaviour. Compared to the data obtained in a control group, marked differences were observed in this population, bearing on the magnitude, the topographical distribution and the interhemispheric symmetry of the delta power curves. During and after withdrawal, changes co

[Electrophysiological correlates of efficacy of nootropic drugs in the treatment of consequences of traumatic brain injury in adolescents].

To assess objectively a dynamics of brain functional state, EEG spectral power and peak latency of the P300 component of cognitive auditory evoked potentials have been analyzed in adolescents during the course of nootropic therapy of residual asthenic consequences of traumatic brain injury (ICD-10 F07.2). The study included 76 adolescents, aged 12-18 years, who have undergone severe closed head trauma with brain commotion 1/2--5 years ago. Patients have been divided into 3 groups treated during one month with cerebrolysin, piracetam or magne-B6, respectively. After the end of the nootropic the

Casein kinase 1δ activity: a key element in the zebrafish circadian timing system.

Zebrafish have become a popular model for studies of the circadian timing mechanism. Taking advantage of its rapid development of a functional circadian clock and the availability of light-entrainable clock-containing cell lines, much knowledge has been gained about the circadian clock system in this species. However, the post-translational modifications of clock proteins, and in particular the phosphorylation of PER proteins by Casein kinase I delta and epsilon (CK1δ and CK1ε), have so far not been examined in the zebrafish. Using pharmacological inhibitors for CK1δ and CK1ε, a pan-CK1δ/ε inh

Transient global amnesia after mild head injury in childhood.

In seven entirely healthy children in the age group of 6.5 to 14.5 years, mild head injury produced transient global amnesia (TGA) of median duration of 4.5 hours. None of the patients had convincing signs of brain concussion or clinical focal symptomatology. In four cases CT examination of the brain showed normal findings. Four children had a transient abnormal EEG (intermittent delta rhythms, slowed background activity inconstant local finding (of slow waves). During the period monitored (2-34 months) there was no recurrent attack and the children have had no difficulties. Pathologically, th…

Paroxysmal delta waves of awake EEG in childhood adrenoleukodystrophy: Possible indicator of the hematopoietic stem cell therapy (HSCT).

BACKGROUND: Childhood cerebral type of Adrenoleukodystrophy (CC-ALD) is fatal without hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We consider whether EEGs showing focal paroxysmal delta waves can be a candidate of early detector of the apparent ALD and HSCT therapy. METHODS: Twenty-two male children with ALD (5-16 years; 10.4 ± 2.8) were evaluated. Fourteen children were diagnosed as CC-ALD and the rest 8 were yet asymptomatic both clinical and MRI findings. CC-ALD patients with frontal or occipital MRI main lesions were classified as Types F and O (4 and 10 patients). Asymptomatic patien

Mammillary body regulates state-dependent fear by alternating cortical oscillations.

State-dependent memory describes a phenomenon that memory will be efficiently retrieved only when the brain state during retrieval matches the state during encoding. While a variety of psychoactive drugs, such as ethanol, cocaine, morphine and NMDA receptor antagonists, are able to induce state-dependent memory, the biological hallmark of brain state and neural mechanism of its regulation are still unknown. In this study, we found that MK-801 enhanced delta oscillations in awake mice, representing a drug-induced brain state, in which fear memory could only be successfully retrieved when the sa

The visual cognitive network, but not the visual sensory network, is affected in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: a study of brain oscillatory responses.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is considered in many as prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Event-related oscillations (ERO) reflect cognitive responses of brain whereas sensory-evoked oscillations (SEO) inform about sensory responses. For this study, we compared visual SEO and ERO responses in MCI to explore brain dynamics (BACKGROUND). Forty-three patients with MCI (mean age=74.0 year) and 41 age- and education-matched healthy-elderly controls (HC) (mean age=71.1 year) participated in the study. The maximum peak-to-peak amplitudes for each subject's averaged delta response (0.5-3.0
