Monitoring of dental morbidity in children of Ukraine in recent years has shown an increase in diseases of dento-maxillaire anomalies and dentition defects, which is the result of reducing the level of specific resistance caused by declined social conditions of life and environmental situation. Today, there is a need for timely prosthetics of dentition defects in the period of mixed occlusion with the help of prosthesis designs, which have a positive effect on the harmonious development of the dento-maxillaire system and the body as a whole. The aim - to increase the effectiveness of orthodont

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease of the connective tissue associated with various craniofacial abnormalities. Aim of the present study was to assess the variability of palatal shape in a sample of 31 Marfan patients compared to a control group of no syndromic subjects, in two stages of dentition, by using 3D geometric morphometric analysis.
METHODS: Thirty one growing subjects with Marfan syndrome were selected and divided into two subgroups: MG1 with mixed dentition (10 M, 6F, mean age 7+/- 0.7 years), MG2 with permanent dentition (8 M, 7F, mean age

OBJECTIVES: Currently, the research results regarding the bilateral temporomandibular joint symmetry in patients at different ages with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) are still controversial. In this study, the position of condyle in the articular fossa and morphology of condyle in UCLP patients at different developmental stages was measured and analyzed to explore the asymmetry difference, which can provide a new theoretical basis for the sequential therapy.
METHODS: A total of 90 patients with UCLP were divided into a mixed dentition group (31 cases), a young permanent dent

The mixed dentition stage is the period between primary and permanent dentition. The following biological processes are complicated and variable: jaw growth, development of inherited permanent teeth embryo, physiological absorption of primary teeth, restoration of surrounding alveolar bones, and growth and function establishment of soft tissues. For the normal development of the jaw, the establishment of the good occlusion relationship, development, and function of soft tissue is very important, whether or not the primary teeth are normally replaced by the permanent teeth in the mixed dentitio

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of action of root resorption in a permanent tooth can be classified as infection-related (e.g., microbial infection) or non-infection-related (e.g., sterile damage). Infection induced root resorption occurs due to bacterial invasion. Non-infection-related root resorption stimulates the immune system through a different mechanism.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this narrative review is to describe the pathophysiologic process of non-infection-related inflammatory processes involved in root resorption of permanent teeth.
METHODS: A literature search on root resorption was con

The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Consensus Conference Recommended Diagnostic Terminology states that mature permanent teeth clinically diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis are treated with pulpectomy and root canal filling because inflamed vital pulp is not capable of healing. Histological studies have demonstrated that clinically diagnosed irreversible pulpitis does not involve the entire pulp. A recent International Endodontic Journal Editorial suggested clinical diagnosis of pulp disease should be reassessed because of the poor correlation between clinical symptoms and pulp se

BACKGROUND: Teeth that have suffered trauma can fuse to the surrounding bone in a process called dental ankylosis. Ankylosed permanent front teeth fail to erupt during facial growth and can become displaced, thus resulting in functional and aesthetic problems. Dental ankylosis is also associated with root resorption, which may eventually lead to the loss of affected teeth. Different interventions for the management of ankylosed permanent front teeth have been described, but it is unclear which are the most effective.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of any intervention that can be us

BACKGROUND: Crowded teeth develop when there is not enough space in the jaws into which the teeth can erupt. Crowding can affect baby teeth (deciduous dentititon), adult teeth (permanent dentition), or both, and is a common reason for referral to an orthodontist. Crowded teeth can affect a child's self-esteem and quality of life. Early loss of baby teeth as a result of tooth decay or trauma, can lead to crowded permanent teeth. Crowding tends to increase with age, especially in the lower jaw.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orthodontic intervention for preventing or correcting crowded te

OBJECTIVE: To compare and analyse the distribution and characteristic of born missing teeth.
METHODS: A total of 183 simple hypodontia patients was reviewed and statistically analysed.
RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the number of missing teeth between different sexs (P > 0.05), and there was also no significant difference in the number of missing teeth among different sites (maxilla, mandible or left and right sides) (P > 0.05). The mandibular second premolar was the most frequently missing tooth. The missing molars were more commonly seen in oligodontia patients who had six

Fusion is a rare developmental anomaly characterized by the union of two adjacent tooth germs during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth formation, resulting in a single enlarged tooth. Its prevalence ranges from 0.4% to 0.9% in the primary dentition and approximately 0.2% in the permanent dentition. Unilateral fusion is more commonly observed in the primary dentition compared to the permanent dentition. Bilateral fusion in permanent teeth is extremely rare, with a reported prevalence of only 0.05%, most frequently affecting the incisors. Bilateral fusion involving the mandibular permanen

Traumatic dental injuries are highly prevalent among preschool children. When occurring at a very young age (prior to the eruption of the primary teeth), such trauma can disturb the normal development of the permanent dentition and, more rarely, affect the primary dentition. This report describes a case of a patient who suffered dentoalveolar trauma at six months of age that caused rare developmental problems in the primary dentition, such as impaction, dilacerations, hypoplasia, and odontoma. Imaging revealed that alterations also occurred in the permanent dentition. This report demonstrates

Complete removal of carious dentin is currently regarded as overtreatment, and the stepwise (twostep) or selective (one-step) caries removal procedures are recommended. This literature review was aimed to summarize research findings on deep caries lesion management approaches in permanent teeth, to determine which method provides better outcomes and to identify possible research gaps. Only intervention studies published between 2000 and 2023 in the English language were considered. The PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched in September 2023, and 7 relevant records were cons

Restoration of extensive defects in young permanent molars is more complex than that in mature permanent teeth. Young permanent teeth are characterized by insufficient enamel mineralization, large pulp chambers, short occlusogingival distance, and unstable gingival margins, limiting both mechanical retention and bonding conditions. In addition, individual factors such as patient cooperation, caries risk, and orthodontic needs further complicate treatment planning. Based on current clinical evidence, this review summarizes the indications, advantages, and limitations of direct adhesive restorat

BACKGROUND: Hypodontia is uncommon in the primary dentition and lateral incisors are the most commonly missing primary teeth in the patients affected. Studies have found that hypodontia in the primary dentition involving only maxillary canine is rare.
CASE REPORTS: Three cases of hypodontia in the primary dentition involving only maxillary canine are presented. Two of them were affected by hypodontia and hyperdontia in the permanent dentitions respectively, yet all the permanent canines developed normally in these three cases.
CONCLUSION: In children with congenitally missing maxillary canin

Odontogenic anomalies can occur as a result of conjoining or twinning defects. These include fusion, gemination and concrescence. This article presents two case reports of double teeth. In the first case reported, a 4 -year-old white boy presented primary double teeth associated to the absence of the right permanent mandibular lateral incisor. In the second case, a 5-year-old white girl had a family history of anomaly in primary dentition. The girl and her mother presented double teeth in the primary dentition. Her mother showed hypodontia in the permanent dentition. Extra and intra oral clini

BACKGROUND/AIM: Alveolar bone process fractures in preschool children are not well documented in the literature. Alveolar process fractures are located very close to primary teeth and permanent tooth germs. This study investigates the risk of healing complications following alveolar process fractures in the primary dentition and potential sequelae in the permanent dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 21 patients with 49 primary teeth involved in an alveolar fracture. The follow-up protocol included clinical and radiographic examinations at spe

Fusion is an anomaly manifested in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. Triple tooth refers to the union of three separate tooth entities. It can involve the normal dentition or supernumerary teeth. Triplication is rarely encountered in deciduous and permanent dentition with an incidence of 0.02%. The case presented herein describes a rare case of triplication in permanent maxillary incisors and supernumerary teeth in a 15-year-old female.
