[Diagnostic difficulties in differentiation between atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis in infants].

On the basis of two children with coexistence of atopic and seborrhoeic dermatitis, authors emphasize similarity of clinical symptoms and chronic, recurrent course of these diseases. Atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis are most common reasons of skin disorders in infants. Location and character of atopic lesions are atypical during infancy. Most often they occur on face and have erythematous-exfoliative and papulovesicular character. Pruritus and anxiety, especially in younger children are often seen. On the contrary seborrhoeic lesions are mostly seen in typical spots, including hairy

[Infantile seborrheic dermatitis and related syndromes. Diagnostic and pathogenetic problems].

Infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis is a dermatosis affecting infants characterized by little or no itching and by completely typical skin symptoms, distribution and evolution. Infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis should therefore be differentiated from atopic dermatitis and from diaper-rash although interferences be possible. In fact the high frequency of the atopic dermatitis and of diaper rash may cause these two manifestations to sometimes superimpose on infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis. This in turn causes rather complex clinical situations that may be very hard, but not impossible to diagnose i

Patch tests in adverse cutaneous drug reaction.

Twenty-one patients with history of adverse cutaneous drug reaction were patch tested with 23 commonly used drugs in 5% concentration in petrolatum. Nine patients (42.85%) tested were positive to the incriminated drugs while 3 (14.28%) showed positive reactions to other drugs. Highest positivity (50%) was seen in maculo-popular cases while Stevens-Johnson syndrome and exfoliative dermatitis patients showed negative results.

Diphenylhydantoin-induced hypersensitivity reaction with interstitial nephritis.

A 10-year-old black girl had an episode of diphenylhydantoin(DPH)-induced exfoliative dermatitis, lymphadenopathy, hepatitis, peripheral eosinophilia, and transient renal failure. The findings of specific lymphocyte sensitization of DPH, a clinically typical delayed hypersensitivity reaction, multinucleated histiocytes in the renal interstitium, and negative renal immunofluorescence studies for immune reactants indicate that the child's renal injury was at least partially cell-mediated.

A descriptive profile of eczema in a tertiary dermatological referral centre in Singapore.

A retrospective study of 25,448 new cases of patients with various types of eczemas seen over a two-year period (1989-1990) was conducted. This represented 34.1% of new cases (74,589) seen at the Centre. The M:F ratio was 1:1. Occupational and ethnic distribution did not differ from that of the total outpatient population. 67% were endogenous eczema. Among the endogenous eczema, the majority (70%) were either non-specified endogenous eczema, hand and feet eczema or atopic dermatitis. 13.7% were contact dermatitis. Of these, 50% were non-specified contact dermatitis, 39% were irritant contact d

Dapsone syndrome with acute renal failure during leprosy treatment: case report.

Dapsone syndrome is a rare hypersensitivity reaction to dapsone and is characterized by high fever, papular or exfoliative dermatitis, progressing to liver toxicity and generalized lymphadenopathy, resembling a mononucleosis infection. We report a patient who developed acute renal failure, as well as other complications characteristic of dapsone syndrome, during leprosy treatment. Renal involvement had not been previously described as a dapsone syndrome feature.

Erythroderma and pneumonitis induced by penicillin?

Penicillin and its derivatives are known to cause several dermatologic and pulmonary hypersensitivity reactions. This report describes a patient who presented with combined generalized exfoliative dermatitis and severe pneumonitis caused by penicillin and aggravated by ampicillin, methicillin and mezlocillin. Antibiotic challenges with penicillin caused immediate reappearance of the dermatological manifestation; reactivation of the pneumonitis was probably prevented by immediate discontinuation of the drug.

[A clinical analysis of 50 cases of medicament-like dermatitis due to trichloroethylene].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations, complications and treatment of medicament-like dermatitis due to trichloroethylene (TCE), so as to provide basis for studying its etiology and mechanism. METHODS: Fifty patients with dermatitis due to TCE from 1997 to 2000 were analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: The occurrence of the dermatitis was not parallel to TCE exposure levels, without significant dose-effect relationship. This disease could be caused by both inhalation and skin exposure. The latency period of TCE dermatitis ranged from 5 to 66 days, and the average was 31.5 d (Me

A previously undescribed cutaneous paraneoplastic syndrome in a cat with thymoma.

BACKGROUND: Exfoliative dermatitis is a well-recognized cutaneous paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) associated with thymoma in cats, of which the clinical and histopathological presentation has been well-characterized. OBJECTIVES: To describe a novel clinical skin manifestation associated with thymoma in a cat. ANIMAL: A 14-year-old neutered female domestic short hair cat. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Physical, abdominal ultrasonographic, thoracic radiographic, ultrasonographic and computed tomographic examinations, histopathological assessment of the skin and mediastinal mass. RESULTS: The cat was

Butachlor-induced acute toxic hepatitis.

Butachlor is a highly effective herbicidal substance widely used by farmers. We report a 60-year-old man with exfoliative dermatitis, jaundice, increase in liver enzymes and eosinophilia one day after accidental dermal exposure to butachlor toxin. The diagnostic workup showed no other cause and liver histology was consistent with substance-induced toxic hepatitis. Within two weeks of conservative therapy, his liver function tests returned to normal.

Parthenium dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to Parthenium hysterophorus is the most common cause of plant dermatitis in India. Parthenium dermatitis is caused by dry powder of leaves and flowers and hair-like structures (trichomes). Sesquiterpene lactones (SQLs) are the most important allergens responsible for ACD to parthenium. The different patterns include classical airborne contact dermatitis, chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD), exfoliative and widespread dermatitis. There is a definite trend towards a change from an airborne pattern to a CAD pattern in the natural history of parthenium dermatitis. In

A novel SPINK5 mutation and successful subcutaneous immunoglobulin replacement therapy in a child with Netherton syndrome.

We report a 2-year-old patient with Netherton syndrome presenting with generalized exfoliative erythroderma, ichthyosiform dermatitis, trichorrhexis invaginata, hypernatremic dehydration, failure to thrive, and recurrent respiratory infections. Molecular analysis of SPINK5 identified a novel mutation (c.1530CA). Our case report also verifies and supports the safety and efficacy of subcutaneous immunoglobulin substitution in chronic generalized skin disorders associated with primary immunodeficiencies such as Netherton syndrome.
