Sunscreen intolerance. Contact sensitization, photocontact sensitization, and irritancy of sunscreen agents.

Reports of contact sensitization and photocontact sensitization induced by various sunscreening agents are reviewed. Current knowledge about the most often used sunscreening agents is summarized. The problems of cross-sensitization and sensitization in photodermatoses are discussed. Strategies for patch and photopatch testing, as well as immediate-type testing, are critically evaluated.

Low-pulse energy Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment for hair-dye-induced Riehl's melanosis.

Riehl's melanosis, a form of dermatitis characterized by reticulate pigmentation, typically presents as a gray-brown to black hyperpigmentation on the face and neck. Among the various etiologic factors suggested, photoallergic reaction and pigmented contact dermatitis resulting from exposure to drugs, coal tar dyes, optical whitener, or other ingredients found in cosmetics are believed to be the major contributing factors in this disease. The histopathological features of Riehl's melanosis mainly consist of pigmentary incontinence along with infiltration of numerous dermal melanophages and lym

A new animal model for contact dermatitis: the hairless guinea pig.

Allergic and irritant contact reactions were evaluated in the recently identified hairless guinea pig, Crl:IAF(HA)BR, a mutant from the Hartley strain. The cutaneous changes were observed macro- and microscopically. The irritant contact dermatitis was induced by croton oil, 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), or anthralin. Both hairless and hairy guinea pigs developed similar reactions to these chemicals. The density of the epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) of hairless guinea pigs was significantly higher than that in the hairy strain. Allergic contact sensitization was easily induced with DNCB. Ph

Shedding a light on the importance of photopatch testing: A 12-year experience in a dermatology unit.

BACKGROUND: Photopatch testing has been standardized for diagnosing photoallergic contact dermatitis but is still infrequently used. OBJECTIVES: To characterize photopatch test (PPT) results and their clinical relevance. METHODS: We collected retrospective data from patients photopatch tested in our Dermatology Unit (2010-2021), using the European PPT 'baseline' series, other allergens, and patient's own products, when appropriate. RESULTS: Out of 223 patients, 75 patients (33.6%) were reactive with 124 positive PPT reactions, considered relevant in 56/223 patients (25.1%) and in 72/124 rea

Photochemical formation of singlet molecular oxygen ((1)O2) in illuminated 6-methylcoumarin solutions.

Use of the fragrance 6-methylcoumarin (6-MC) in cosmetic products has declined significantly due to numerous reports of photoallergic contact dermatitis associated with its use. We have determined that 6-MC undergoes direct photolysis with an estimated half-life of 83 minutes when illuminated with mid-latitude U.S., noon-centered, equinox sunlight and a quantum yield for photolysis at 313 nm of phi = 3 x 10(-3). The work presented here also provides evidence that singlet molecular oxygen ((1)O2) is formed in illuminated solutions containing 6-MC. An estimated value of phi = 0.01 is reported fo

The clinical spectrum of the persistent light reactor.

Eight patients had a chronic photodermatitis of five to 19 years' duration. The clinical and photobiological features were consistent with the pattern observed in persistent light reactors. Severity and clinical presentation, however, were quite variable, ranging from a few isolated papules to extensive lichenification involving the entire exposed skin. Three had positive photopatch tests to halogenated salicylanilides, while the remaining five reacted to musk ambrette. Exposure of the uninvolved skin to UV-B or solar-simulated radiation provoked abnormal delayed papular or infiltrated reactio

Photocontact dermatitis and chloracne: two major occupational and environmental skin diseases induced by different actions of halogenated chemicals.

Among occupational and environmental disorders, contact or photocontact dermatitis and an acneiform eruption are two major skin disorders. Photocontact dermatitis was historically caused by various halogenated salicylanilides, while the acne is induced by halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons and thus called chloracne. Therefore, it should be noted that halogenated chemical compounds are important causative agents in the occupational and environmental medicine. In photocontact dermatitis, photoconjugation of epidermal cells with a photohaptenic halogenated chemical is the initial step. Langerhans

Skin changes in "screen dermatitis" versus classical UV- and ionizing irradiation-related damage--similarities and differences.

An increasing number of persons say that they get cutaneous problems as well as symptoms from certain internal organs, such as the central nervous system (CNS) and the heart, when being close to electric equipment. A major group of these patients are the users of video display terminals (VDTs), who claim to have subjective and objective skin- and mucosa-related symptoms, such as pain, itch, heat sensation, erythema, papules, and pustules. The CNS symptoms are, e.g. dizziness, tiredness, and headache. Erythema, itch, heat sensation, edema and pain are also common symptoms of sunburn (UV dermati

Lichenoid dermatitis in 3 professional footballers.

We describe 3 professional footballers who developed lichenoid dermatitis over a short period of time. Clinically, the eruption in all 3 of them can be classified as lichenoid photodermatitis. We suggest an influence of possible contact allergens or photo-active substances. Histologic evidence points to features of classical lichen planus with purpura, typical of lichen aureus (purpuricus), but showing some clinical and morphological differences.

Assessment of Skin Photoallergy Risk in Cosmetics Containing Herbal Extract Ingredients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In recent years, herbal extracts are becoming increasingly popular ingredients added in cosmetics; however, the assessment of their potential adverse effects on the skin remains unclear. As Coptis, Phellodendron amurense, curcumin, and shikonin are herbs currently used in cosmetic ingredients, the aim of this study was to assess their skin photoallergy (PA) potential and the concentrations at which they could safely be used. METHODS: In the patch test, Coptis, P. amurense, curcumin, and shikonin with 5, 10, 25, and 50% concentration were applied on 33 healthy Chinese sub

Secondary plant products causing photosensitization in grazing herbivores: their structure, activity and regulation.

Photosensitivity in animals is defined as a severe dermatitis that results from a heightened reactivity of skin cells and associated dermal tissues upon their exposure to sunlight, following ingestion or contact with UV reactive secondary plant products. Photosensitivity occurs in animal cells as a reaction that is mediated by a light absorbing molecule, specifically in this case a plant-produced metabolite that is heterocyclic or polyphenolic. In sensitive animals, this reaction is most severe in non-pigmented skin which has the least protection from UV or visible light exposure. Photosensiti

Berloque dermatitis mimicking child abuse.

Berloque dermatitis is a type of photocontact dermatitis. It occurs after perfumed products containing bergamot (or a psoralen) are applied to the skin followed by exposure to sunlight. Striking linear patterns of hyperpigmentation are characteristic, corresponding to local application of the scented product. In the acute phase, erythema and even blistering can be seen. We report a case of berloque dermatitis in a 9-year-old girl that was initially reported as child abuse. To our knowledge, this is the first report of berloque dermatitis mimicking child abuse. Questioning to elicit a history o
