PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of severe desiccation on corneal thickness in scarring trachoma by comparing the thickness of normal and trachomatous dry eye corneas.
METHODS: Ultrasonic pachymetry was used to measure the corneal thickness at nine points in the central and peripheral cornea (superior, superonasal, nasal, inferonasal, inferior, inferotemporal, temporal, superotemporal) in 45 eyes of 27 patients with trachomatous dry eye and 54 eyes of 31 normal subjects.

Respirometry is a standard technique in comparative physiology laboratories, with measurements of rates of O(2) consumption and CO(2) production available for hundreds of species. A common recommendation when carrying out respirometry is that water vapor be removed from the air stream before entering the analyzer. Neisseria meningitidis is transmitted through the inhalation of large human respiratory droplets, but the risk from contaminated environmental surfaces is controversial. Compared to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumanni, meningococcal viability after desiccation on plastic, glass or metal surfaces decreased rapidly, but viable meningococci were present for up to 72 h. Encapsulation did not provide an advantage for meningococcal environmental survival on environmental surfaces.
