Teething disturbances; prevalence of objective manifestations in children under age 4 months to 36 months.

Postoperative infections after spinal surgery are a challenging issue, difficult to diagnose and treat, that requires prolonged medical therapy and even surgery. In this paper, we aim to review the current standards in the diagnosis and treatment of post-procedural Spondylodiscitis (SD). We performed a review of the available literature focusing on diagnostic and therapeutic standards of post-procedural SD, both after minimally invasive procedures and open surgery. Spinal infections can occur in less invasive procedures with an incidence ranging from 0.26% to 2.75%. Post-surgical spinal infect

Neonatal hypocalcaemia associated with rotavirus diarrhoea.

UNLABELLED: We observed an association between rotavirus diarrhoea and hypocalcaemia in several patients and therefore started a prospective evaluation with measurement of calcium levels in all patients with rotavirus infection during a period of 8 months. We report on 54 infants with rotavirus gastro-enteritis. Serum concentrations of sodium, potassium, and total and ionized calcium were measured on admission. If hypocalcaemia was detected, total and ionized calcium were measured every day until recovery. Calcium was supplemented as calcium gluconate which was added to milk. Out of 54 newborn

[Rotaviruses in acute diarrhea syndrome of infants and small children].

During a period of one year 227 children aged form three days to two years were hospitalized for acute diarrhoea syndrome. In 111 cases (48.9%) the presence of HRV was observed in the faeces (group I). In 116 children (51.1%) no presence was shown of HRV in the faeces (group II). An analysis was done of the significance of differences between the observed clinical sign and abnormalities in laboratory tests in both analyzed groups. It was shown that the general condition of the children in group I was statistically more frequently moderately severe and severe (58.6% and 23.4%) than in group II.

Severe hypernatremic dehydration and hyperkalemia in an infant with gastroenteritis secondary to rotavirus.

A case of severe hypernatremic dehydration (sodium, 191 mmol/L) with associated severe hyperkalemia (potassium, 11.2 mmol/L) and hyperosmolality (502 mOsm/kg) is described in a 3-month-old infant secondary to acute infection with rotavirus. The patient was managed with i.v. fluid resuscitation in conjunction with intracranial pressure monitoring and was discharged well and without any permanent sequelae. Review of the literature reveals the case described to be the most profound example of hypernatremic dehydration with a favorable outcome reported from diarrheal illness. Strategies for manage

[A case of congenital chloridorrhea: the diagnostic contribution of pre- and postnatal echography].

The authors describe a case of "congenital chloride diarrhea" in a preterm female infant with a profound chronic diarrhea beginning at birth. The disease lies in a defect of active intestinal Cl- transport which results in a large loss of the electrolytes and water. To prevent a reduced growth and the renal involvement an adequate replacement therapy is necessary.

Diarrhoeal disease--epidemiology and intervention.

The causes of the complex triad of gastro-enteritis, other related infections and malnutrition have at their roots poverty, lack of political will, overpopulation and destruction of the environment. Intervention involves multiple sectors of the economy and not only the health services of a country, and should take place as early as possible during the natural history of the disease.

[Secondary carbohydrate and protein intolerances following gastroenteritis].

After acute gastroenteritis, delayed recovery and protracted diarrhoea may occur, particularly in very young infants, in bottle-fed malnourished infants, and after rota virus infection. Monosaccharide and disaccharide malabsorption have been demonstrated to contribute to postenteritis problems in these children. The contribution of secondary food protein intolerance to the perpetuation of diarrhoea after gastroenteritis is less well understood. Secondary sugar intolerance is diagnosed by estimation of stool pH, Clinitest, H2 breath testing and, in some cases, direct enzyme determination from b

Rotavirus as an aetiological agent of acute childhood diarrhoea in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Of the 456 urban children aged 14 days and 4 years examined for rotavirus in this study, 376 had diarrhoea while 80 were without diarrhoea and serve as control. Among the 376 diarrhoeic children, 57 (15.2%) had rotavirus while none of the 80 control children had the virus. Rotavirus was significantly higher (p less than 0.05) among the in-patients (19.8%) than in the out-patients (10.3%) and among children of 7-12 months compared with other aged groups. The majority of the children that had the rotavirus lived in areas without pipe-borne water and similarly belonged to the low-socio-economic l

Treatment of severe diarrhoeal dehydration in hospital and home by oral fluids.

This paper reports on 1330 infants, from birth to 24 months old, suffering from diarrhoea and moderate to severe dehydration who were hospitalized in Tehran University Hospital over a period of 11 months. Fifteen per cent of them had signs of shock and 36% had marasmus. All patients were treated orally in two phases: rehydration therapy and maintenance therapy. For rehydration, an isotonic fluid (sodium 80 mmol l-1, potassium 20 mmol l-1) was administered at a rate of 40 ml kg-1 h-1 until all signs of dehydration disappeared. Following complete hydration, the patients were discharged and maint

Serum alkaline phosphatase and zinc undernutrition in infants with chronic diarrhea.

III infants and children need zinc replacement in total parenteral nutrition solutions, but assessment of these needs and total body zinc status is difficult. Seven infants with severe diarrhea initially given 80 to 100 micrograms/kg/day of elemental zinc developed systemic zinc deficiency as indicated by an acrodermatitis-like skin rash and low serum alkaline phosphatase. Serum zinc levels were borderline low only in conjunction with hypoalbuminemia. Daily urinary zinc excretion was normal. With increased zinc supplementation of 200 to 300 micrograms/kg/day, the rash healed and serum alkaline

Congenital chloride diarrhea: possibility for prenatal diagnosis.

Two pregnancies, which resulted in the births of infants affected by congenital chloride diarrhea (C.C.D.) are presented. No method is available for prenatal diagnosis of this disorder. In this paper the intrauterine onset of diarrhea is confirmed by amniofoetography and high bilirubin values in amniotic fluid. In the second case the amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (A.F.P.) was detected to be abnormally high at the 29th gestational week.

[Obstinate diarrhea in infants. A review of 84 cases].

Eighty-four cases of obstinate severe diarrhoea in infants are reported. Criteria for clinical and biological severity are precised. Histological examination of the small bowel was performed in 57 cases; a total atrophy of intestinal villi was found in only 33% of the cases during the first 3 months. Exclusive parenteral feeding, from the beginning or after failure of enteral feeding was given to 71 infants. Later on, enteral renutrition at constant flow, was administered, after simple preparation, in most cases. Seventeen died out of 84 infants, 7 of them within 2 weeks. For the others, the a

Reovirus-like agent as a cause of nosocomial diarrhea in infants.

Surveillance for nosocomial diarrhea due to a reovirus-like agent was maintained on the pediatric wards of a large metropolitan hospital in January and February, 1976, during a large community outbreak of that illness. During this period, 30 (27%) of 111 children under surveillance were admitted for dehydration secondary to diarrhea; 21 (70%) of these 30 children had RLA in stool samples obtained at admission. Ten (17%) of the 60 children admitted without diarrhea, hence at risk of acquiring nosocomial RLA infection, contracted the illness. With human RLA as an antigen, no hospital personnel h
