The mechanism proposed for the transformation of cyclopentanone to the dienoic acid 1, as published in this journal, is revealed to be in error. We show that carbon 11 derives not from dimethyl sulfoxide as proposed but from the dichloromethane present in the "quenching" solution. The intermediacy of an α-chloromethyl ketone and its subsequent fragmentation in the presence of a hydroxide ion is supported by experiments described herein and by extensive literature precedent.

The reaction proceeds via metal-free cascade annulation of isopropene derivatives. Using isopropene derivatives as C3 synthons, NH4I as the "N" source, and formaldehyde or dimethyl sulfoxide as the carbon source, this reaction realizes the efficient formation of intermolecular C-N and C-C bonds.

Many nonoperative therapies have been investigated for the treatment of Dupuytren's disease. These include needle fasciotomy, continuous slow skeletal traction, radiation, dimethyl sulfoxide, vitamin E, allopurinol, physical therapy, ultrasound therapy, steroid injections, radiation, interferon, splinting, and enzymatic fasciotomy. Most of these therapies have not proven to be clinically useful. However, recent investigation of enzymatic fasciotomy using collagenase injection has shown encouraging results.

The effect of tiacrilast, a mast cell mediator-release inhibitor, was studied in dinitrofluorobenzene-induced allergic and croton oil- or dimethyl sulfoxide-induced irritant murine contact dermatitis. At 1% concentration, the compound significantly reduced the ear swelling in both allergic and irritant dermatitis and preserved the mast cell architecture on histopathology. These findings suggest that mast cells participate in the elicitation of murine contact dermatitis.
