Working memory and visual discrimination distraction tasks improve cold pressor pain tolerance in children.

OBJECTIVE: Distraction is a well-established pain management technique for children experiencing acute pain, although the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of distraction are not well understood. It has been postulated that engagement of executive functions, such as working memory, may be a critical factor in attenuating pain via distraction. To test this hypothesis, we compared a 1-back task requiring engagement of working memory with a simple visual discrimination task demanding focused attention, but lower cognitive load (0-back). METHOD: Seventy-nine children (6-12 years old) underw

Asymmetrical interference between number and item size perception provides evidence for a domain specific impairment in dyscalculia.

Dyscalculia, a specific learning disability that impacts arithmetical skills, has previously been associated to a deficit in the precision of the system that estimates the approximate number of objects in visual scenes (the so called 'number sense' system). However, because in tasks involving numerosity comparisons dyscalculics' judgements appears disproportionally affected by continuous quantitative dimensions (such as the size of the items), an alternative view linked dyscalculia to a domain-general difficulty in inhibiting task-irrelevant responses. To arbitrate between these views, we eval

Discrimination of multiple stress levels in virtual reality environments using heart rate variability.

People are suffering from various stress during daily living. Stress can cause a variety of symptoms, and in severe cases, it can lead to a dangerous disease. For this reason, it is essential to develop a simple method to evaluate stress level precisely. Popularly, heart rate variability (HRV) is used because it can reflect autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. On the other hand, virtual reality (VR), which can provide environments similar to reality, is widely used in laboratory-based experiments. In this paper, we analyzed the HRV of healthy people by using the photoplethysmogram (PPG) wh

Native and novel language prosodic sensitivity in English-speaking children with and without dyslexia.

Children with reading disability and normal reading development were compared in their ability to discriminate native (English) and novel language (Mandarin) from nonlinguistic sounds. Children's preference for native versus novel language sounds and for disyllables containing dominant trochaic versus non-dominant iambic stress patterns was also assessed. Participants included second and third grade monolingual native English speakers with reading disability (N = 18) and normal reading development (N = 18). Children selected from pairs of novel, native, and nonlinguistic sounds that was more l

Use of speed cues in the detection of moving objects by moving observers.

When an observer moves through an environment containing stationary and moving objects, he or she must be able to determine which objects are moving relative to the others in order to navigate successfully and avoid collisions. We investigated whether image speed can be used as a cue to detect a moving object in the scene. Our results show that image speed can be used to detect moving objects as long as the object is moving sufficiently faster or slower than it would if it were part of the stationary scene.

Crowding--an essential bottleneck for object recognition: a mini-review.

Crowding, generally defined as the deleterious influence of nearby contours on visual discrimination, is ubiquitous in spatial vision. Crowding impairs the ability to recognize objects in clutter. It has been extensively studied over the last 80 years or so, and much of the renewed interest is the hope that studying crowding may lead to a better understanding of the processes involved in object recognition. Crowding also has important clinical implications for patients with macular degeneration, amblyopia and dyslexia. There is no shortage of theories for crowding-from low-level receptive fiel

Early preclinical studies of discriminable sedative and hallucinogenic drug effects.

RATIONALE: One important technique in behavioral pharmacology is to train laboratory animals to discriminate between a psychoactive drug effect and a nondrug condition. Tests with different drugs have identified several categories of drugs that have different discriminable effects. OBJECTIVES: The two authors describe and discuss the early research on discriminable effects of sedative and hallucinogenic drugs and their acquaintance with each other at Yale University prior to their early and frequent publications on discriminable drug effects. Herb Barry studied sedative drugs primarily and Ji

Equivalence relations in individuals with language limitations and mental retardation.

The study of equivalence relations exhibited by individuals with mental retardation and language limitations holds the promise of providing information of both theoretical and practical significance. We reviewed the equivalence literature with this population, defined in terms of subjects having moderate, severe, or profound mental retardation. The literature includes 55 such individuals, most of whom showed positive outcomes on equivalence tests. The results to date suggest that naming skills are not necessary for positive equivalence test outcomes. Thus far, however, relatively few subjects

What does the Ternus display tell us about motion processing in human vision?

The Ternus display is a moving visual stimulus which elicits two very different percepts, according to the length of the interstimulus interval (ISI) between each frame of the motion sequence. These two percepts, referred to as element motion and group motion, have previously been analysed in terms of the operation of a low-level, dedicated short-range motion process (in the case of element motion), and of a higher-level, attentional long-range motion process (in the case of group motion). We used a novel Ternus configuration to show that both element and group motion are, in fact, mediated so

Fimbria-fornix lesions impair spatial working memory but not cognitive mapping.

Three experiments were designed to evaluate the relative merits of two theories of hippocampal function, the cognitive mapping theory and the working memory theory. Rats were tested in a series of maze tasks that varied in memory requirements. In the experiments that required cognitive mapping but not working memory (Experiments 1 and 3), rats with fimbria-fornix lesions reached stable levels of performance that were as accurate as those of control rats, and they also performed accurately during transfer tests, results demonstrating that they used a cognitive mapping strategy to solve the disc

Burden of the Fruity: Family Support and Suicide Ideation as Mediators Between Discrimination and Suicide Behavior in LGBTQ+ Malaysians.

Malaysian pervasive climate places its LGBTQ+ residents at heightened risk for suicidal behaviors (SB). This cross-sectional study aimed to elucidate connections between minority stressors (discrimination), types of social supports, and suicidality in this marginalized population. Utilizing online surveys, 317 LGBTQ+ Malaysians aged 18-49 provided data regarding experienced discrimination, perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others, suicidal ideation (SI), and SB. Quantitative analyses illuminated several key findings. First, discrimination is positively associated w

Differences in and associations between belief in just deserts and human rights restrictions over a 3-year period in five countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discrimination, which arose during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, is a global public health issue. This study aimed to provide fundamental knowledge in proposing control measures to mitigate discrimination. We focused on two psychological variables: belief in just deserts (BJD, i.e., the belief that the infected individual deserves to be infected), a psychological factor that potentially promotes discrimination and prejudice, and human rights restrictions (HRR; i.e., the degree of individuals' agreement with government restrictions on citizens' behavior during emergencies). Differences

Rediscovering the simple yet profound joy of breathing without pain: My experience with childhood tuberculosis.

In this personal essay, I recount my lived experience of childhood tuberculosis, highlighting the physical, emotional, and psychological toll on myself and my family. I reflect on how tuberculosis care has since improved, but also how certain critical gaps persist, especially the challenges of inadequate financial support, post-recovery social reintegration, and insufficient psychological care for persons with tuberculosis. Drawing from my experience, I advocate measures to address stigma, invisible costs, and discrimination. Holistic care for tuberculosis must go beyond just medical recovery

Freedom and mental health: an overview of the impact of fundamental rights on psychological wellbeing.

Freedom, in its many forms, is a cornerstone of human rights. These include, among others, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of assembly, and freedom from discrimination. However, these freedoms are not only legal or political constructs but are also deeply embedded in the socio-cultural, religious, political, historical, and hence psychological composition of human beings. Rather than examining all of the many manifestations of freedom at once, this paper aims to explore the impact of a few specific freedoms-including freedom of speech, thought, assembly, movement, and protection

Multilevel Racism and Discrimination and Cardiovascular Disease and Related Biopsychosocial Mechanisms: An Integrated Scoping and Literature Review and Future Research Agenda.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the last two decades, empirical research has significantly advanced our understanding of the link between discrimination and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This integrated scoping and narrative literature review delineates the extant peer-reviewed research on discrimination and clinical and subclinical CVD in samples that include Black adults, using a multilevel conceptualization of race-related discrimination and racism. We also identify potential intermediary mechanisms in the racism-CVD relationship and propose a comprehensive future research agenda. RECENT FINDINGS: U

Odour-based kin discrimination in the cooperatively breeding meerkat.

Kin recognition is a useful ability for animals, facilitating cooperation among relatives and avoidance of excessive kin competition or inbreeding. In meerkats, Suricata suricatta, encounters between unfamiliar kin are relatively frequent, and kin recognition by phenotype matching is expected to avoid inbreeding with close relatives. Here, we investigate whether female meerkats are able to discriminate the scent of unfamiliar kin from unfamiliar non-kin. Dominant females were presented with anal gland secretion from unfamiliar individuals that varied in their relatedness. Our result indicates

Intermittent thiamine deficiency in the rhesus monkey. II. Evidence for memory loss.

Thiamine-deprived rhesus monkeys exhibited a pattern of impairments in spatial-reversal learning and in recognition of highly familiar items reminiscent of certain memory deficits shown by Wernicke-Korsakoff patients. Postmortem examination in these experimental animals showed neuronal degeneration in the basal ganglia, the parafascicular nucleus of the thalamus, and discrete nuclei of the brainstem and cerebellum. No abnormalities were found in the mammillary bodies and mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus, structures that have been incriminated in the genesis of the memory impairment of the W

Maternal separation facilitates extinction of social fear in adult male mice.

Early life stress, such as child abuse or neglect, is a risk factor for the development of psychopathologies characterized by abnormal social and emotional behaviors. In rodents, long-lasting changes in stress coping and emotional behavior can be induced by separating pups from their mother. We used maternal separation (MS; 3h daily on postnatal days 1-14) to test whether early life stress alters acquisition and extinction of social fear in adult male mice as studied in a specific model of social fear, i.e., in the social fear conditioning paradigm. We show that MS facilitated extinction of so
