Optimization of a new adaptive intervention using the SMART Design to increase COVID-19 testing among people at high risk in an urban community.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has impacted the health and social fabric of individuals and families living across the USA, and it has disproportionately affected people living in urban communities with co-morbidities, those working in high-risk settings, refusing or unable to adhere to CDC guidelines, and more. Social determinants of health (SDH), such as stigmatization, incarceration, and poverty, have been associated with increased exposure to COVID-19 and increased deaths. While vaccines and booster shots are available, it will take time to reach herd immunity, and it is unclear how long newly devel

Diversification in indigenous and ethnic food culture.

A diversified food supply is contingent on underlying biodiversity in the locality where one lives or at a distance from it, if trade routes are established. Indigenous people generally settled at the water's edge so that aquatic foods made up part of their diversified diet, with the rest of the diversity dependent on how much they hunted and gathered, on herded animals, engagement in subsistence agriculture, the ability to process and preserve food and/or food commodities traded. The rapid urbanization of much of the world's population distances people from the origin of their food, the under

Sphincter-saving surgery for failed organ preservation after a neoadjuvant therapy and radiation boost: A surgeon's perspective.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the functional outcomes of patients with low rectal cancer undergoing inter-sphincteric resection (ISR) following brachytherapy boost radiotherapy (BoRT), compared to those who underwent ISR after standard chemoradiotherapy. BoRT is an alternative to total neoadjuvant therapy for increasing organ preservation rates in low rectal cancers. However, its impact on sphincter function following stoma reversal remains unclear. METHOD: The study involved a retrospective analysis of 145 patients treated at a single institution between 2013 and 2021. Eighteen patients r

Hocus pocus: Breaking the curse of presbyopia.

BACKGROUND: Research and awareness on refractive solutions for presbyopia, commonly known as the "Curse of the 40's," is essential as a large population in the world suffer from vision impairments. Population-based surveys have shown that one billion people in the world are in presbyopic age. PURPOSE: Many structural and physiological changes occur in the eye with the onset of presbyopia, including the decrease in amplitude of accommodation. At present, various static and dynamic techniques have been attempted to give presbyopes good vision at near-, intermediate-, and far-viewing distances.

Spectrum and origin of mutations in sporadic cases of haemophilia A in China.

INTRODUCTION: About 30% of haemophilia A (HA) patients are sporadic cases. It is important to confirm the mutation origin and carrier status in these families. AIM: To describe the spectrum and origin of the mutations in 393 Chinese sporadic HA families and identify potential mosaics among non-carrier mothers. METHODS: AccuCopy quantification combined with long-distance PCR was used for genotyping intron 22/1 inversion (Inv22/Inv1) and Inv22 mosaicism. F8 gene sequences were analysed by direct sequencing. Copy number variations of F8 gene were detected by AccuCopy method. Six short tandem re

Three-dimensional Photogrammetric Analysis of Facial Soft-to-Hard Tissue Ratios After Bimaxillary Surgery in Facial Asymmetry Patients With and Without Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by facial port-wine stains. Most patients with facial asymmetry due to SWS have soft and/or hard tissue hypertrophy and require both soft tissue correction and bone surgery. In our experience, because SWS patients are more likely than non-SWS patients to be dissatisfied after bone surgery because of limited soft tissue change, we compared soft tissue changes after bimaxillary surgery between facial asymmetry patients with and without SWS.All patients-5 with SWS and 5 without SWS-underwent bimaxillary surgery by a singl

Laser iridotomy and the corneal endothelium: a systemic review.

This study aims to systemically review the effect of laser iridotomy on the corneal endothelium. Searches were performed for studies that either compared corneal endothelial cell density/count, corneal thickness and morphology pre- and postiridotomy, or evaluated the postiridotomy development of corneal decompensation. There were 26 eligible studies. Our review shows that the effect of laser iridotomy on the corneal endothelium has been investigated with varying results. Although it has been demonstrated to be a relatively safe procedure, there is still the potential long-term risk of corneal

SPONASTRIME dysplasia: report of an 11-year-old boy and review of the literature.

SPONASTRIME (SPOndylar and NAsal changes, with STRIations of the MEtaphyses) dysplasia is a rare, autosomal recessive bone disorder first described by Fanconi et al. [1983: Helv Paediatr Acta 38:267-280]. Radiographic findings include abnormal vertebral bodies with age-dependent changes, and striations of the metaphyses, scoliosis, and retarded ossification of the carpal bones. Physical features include severe short stature, lumbar lordosis, midface hypoplasia, frontal bossing, and a depressed nasal root. To date, 12 patients from 6 families have been reported. Four additional patients have be

[Sports, bones and hormones. Multiple interactions].

Classically, sports activities are thought to have a beneficial effect on bone tissues. Actually, there are many interactions between sports activities and bone tissue and in certain cases complex hormone disorders may develop. Recent progress in the evaluation of bone structure (absorptiometry) and better understanding of the neuroendocrine functions have improved our knowledge of these interactions and helped provide answers as to the true effect of sports, and particular high-level training, on bone tissue. Mechanical stimulation of bone increases the level of both cortical and cancellous b

Discriminant functions and 21-trisomy mosaicism.

A sample of 173 cases of cytogentically diagnosed 21-trisomy mosaicism, 225 cases of complete 21 trisomy and 302 normal controls were used to form discriminant functions for mosaics versus normal controls, and also for complete 21 trisomics versus normal controls; for each of these discriminants optimal sets of ten dermatoglyphic characters were selected. The mean discriminants and discriminant coefficients were calculated on the basis of these characters, using Fisher's method. The relative position of mosaics in respect of the mean discriminant values, was found closer to the Down's syndrome

Coping Styles of Adolescents With Leukemia at a Tertiary Care Cancer Centre in India: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with cancer face unique psychological, social, and developmental challenges that are distinct from those faced by children and adults. While coping strategies influence psychological outcomes, the evidence is limited to high-income countries. Minimal longitudinal data exist in low- and middle-income contexts, where sociocultural factors may shape coping strategies differently. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal qualitative study of adolescents newly diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) at a tertiary cancer centre in India. Thirty participants were purpo

COVID-19 and forced alcohol abstinence in India: The dilemmas around ethics and rights.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as with other countries across the world, the Central and State Governments of India initiated several measures to slow down the spread of the virus and to 'flatten the curve'. One such measure was a 'total lockdown' for several weeks across the country. A complex and unexpected outcome of the lockdown which has medical, ethical, economic, and social dimensions is related to alcohol consumption. The lockdown and consequent acute non-availability of alcohol resulted in people with alcohol dependence going into withdrawals, black marketing of alcohol, and in
