House dust mites (HDM; Dermatophagoides sp.) are one of the commonest aeroallergens worldwide and up to 85% of asthmatics are typically HDM allergic. Jelutong is the wood from Dyera costulata growing in south-east Asia. It is soft and easy to work and is used in, e.g., model workshops in car factories. It has also been much used in woodwork teaching in Swedish comprehensive schools. Most otologists are cautioned at some point in their training that if bone dust is allowed to enter the middle ear while the mastoid is being drilled, there may be adverse consequences. There are closed relations between progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and exposure to quartz dust in the GDR. The recognition of PSS as an occupational disease is regulated by law. By analysis of the dust exposed working places a limit for silica concentrations were fixed. It is unlikely, that silica concentrations below 10% in the respirable dust induce a PSS. There are no significant differences in lung function of PSS-patients with and without quartz exposure.

A postal survey was used to investigate the characteristics of farmers who have acquired dust respirators. In 1979 about a quarter of the farmers were using dust respirators, men more often than women. History of acute symptoms (cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, fever, stuffy nose, and skin itching/rash) following exposure to grain dust was obtained from 661 male and 535 female current and former farmers.
