The environment and the internal clocks: The study of their relationships from prehistoric to modern times.

The origin of biological rhythms goes back to the very beginning of life. They are observed in the animal and plant world at all levels of organization, from cells to ecosystems. As early as the 18th century, plant scientists were the first to explain the relationship between flowering cycles and environmental cycles, emphasizing the importance of daily light-dark cycles and the seasons. Our temporal structure is controlled by external and internal rhythmic signals. Light is the main synchronizer of the circadian system, as daily exposure to light entrains our clock over 24 hours, the endogeno

Genome sequence and phenotypic analysis of a first German Francisella sp. isolate (W12-1067) not belonging to the species Francisella tularensis.

BACKGROUND: Francisella isolates from patients suffering from tularemia in Germany are generally strains of the species F. tularensis subsp. holarctica. To our knowledge, no other Francisella species are known for Germany. Recently, a new Francisella species could be isolated from a water reservoir of a cooling tower in Germany. RESULTS: We identified a Francisella sp. (isolate W12-1067) whose 16S rDNA is 99% identical to the respective nucleotide sequence of the recently published strain F. guangzhouensis. The overall sequence identity of the fopA, gyrA, rpoA, groEL, sdhA and dnaK genes is o

Exploring nonlinear responses of hydrodynamics and algal biomass to restoration measures in a eutrophic shallow urban lake.

Shallow urban lakes are prone to hydrodynamic stagnation due to limited water exchange, rendering them highly susceptible to eutrophication and algal blooms However, for small urban lakes with weak hydrodynamics, key knowledge gaps remain: whether water diversion can disrupt stagnant zones, what critical flow rate is required to suppress algae, and which regions are most suitable for submerged macrophyte restoration. Focusing on Lianshi Lake-a small shallow urban lake in North China-this study developed a coupled hydrodynamic-water quality-ecology model based on the Environmental Fluid Dynamic

Sources identification, health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements (PTE) of Southern parts of NCR environs, Delhi, India.

The National Capital Region is characterized by high depletion and overexploitation with significant water table decline along with challenges related to pollution, including the presence of metal contamination. The urban water system of NCT Delhi requires an updated water infrastructure to meet the expanding population. Total 57 groundwater samples were collected from different sources of drinking water wells and measured for 11 metals concentration during pre-monsoon 2017. The results reveals that Ni (3%) and Pb (4%) exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limits, and Al (16%),

The cryptonephridial/rectal complex: an evolutionary adaptation for water and ion conservation.

Arthropods have integrated digestive and renal systems, which function to acquire and maintain homeostatically the substances they require for survival. The cryptonephridial complex (CNC) is an evolutionary novelty in which the renal organs and gut have been dramatically reorganised. Parts of the renal or Malpighian tubules (MpTs) form a close association with the surface of the rectum, and are surrounded by a novel tissue, the perinephric membrane, which acts to insulate the system from the haemolymph and thus allows tight regulation of ions and water into and out of the CNC. The CNC can recl

Environmental determinants of phenazine- and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonas in the wheat rhizosphere across a precipitation gradient.

The Columbia Plateau of the Inland Pacific Northwest (IPNW) encompasses one of North America's largest dryland wheat production regions, where soil moisture strongly influences plant growth, health, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Two ecologically and genetically distinct groups of the Pseudomonas fluorescens complex naturally suppress soilborne wheat pathogens in IPNW fields by producing either phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (Phz+) or 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl+). To determine how precipitation and associated soil factors shape the abundance of these bacteria, we analyzed wheat root

Crumbotti and rose petals in a ghost mountain valley: foraging, landscape, and their transformations in the upper Borbera Valley, NW Italy.

BACKGROUND: The abandonment of mountain areas in Europe is a process that started during industrialisation and whose traces are still present nowadays. Initiatives aimed at stopping this decline and preserving the local biological and cultural diversities reflect the crucial issue of fostering sustainable rural development. This article contributes to the ongoing debate in assessing and preserving local ecological knowledge (LEK) in a highly marginalised mountain community in the Piedmontese Apennines to support local development. In so doing, it continues a larger project assessing how local

Climate-informed surveillance for climate-sensitive infectious diseases in Somalia: early warning systems, policy gaps, and preparedness priorities.

Climate variability is reshaping infectious disease risk through ecological, environmental, social, and health-system pathways. However, its operational implications remain insufficiently defined in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Somalia is a critical case because recurrent droughts and floods intersect with displacement, food insecurity, weak water and sanitation infrastructure, disrupted immunisation, livestock dependence, and constrained health-system capacity. This narrative review synthesises evidence on climate-sensitive infectious disease risks in Somalia, examines existing sur

Using auxotrophic donor strains to explore pQBR57 plasmid host range among environmental soil bacterial isolates.

Plasmid host range (PHR) plays a key role in the spread of ecologically important genes, alongside applications in microbiome engineering and environmental biotechnology. PHR is a complex trait arising from the combination of plasmid, donor and recipient properties. Most studies of PHR use a single donor strain, leaving the role of the donor unexplored and often require genetically tagged recipient strains for counter-selection, which limits the use of non-genetically tractable strains. Here, we applied auxotrophic donor counter-selection in a relatively high-throughput and accessible screenin

Short-term thermal stratification induces hypoxia-related nutrient pulses which reshapes cyanobacterial dynamics in a shallow lake.

The reduction of external nutrient loading is a common target to address lake eutrophication, however internal nutrient dynamics can significantly delay recovery. In shallow systems, the role of episodic thermal stratification in nutrient dynamics and phytoplankton bloom ecology is often overlooked. We studied 45 years of data from the polymictic Lake Müggelsee, where short-lived stratification events strongly altered oxygen conditions, triggered pulses of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and had consequences for cyanobacterial community dynamics. The DI

A Social-Ecological Model Exploring Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Screening Practices Among Antenatal Health Care Providers.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse health outcomes for the pregnant individual and their baby. Screening approaches for GDM have undergone several iterations, introducing variability in practice among healthcare providers. As such, our study aimed to explore the views of antenatal providers regarding their practices of, and counseling experiences on the topic of, GDM screening in Ontario. We conducted a qualitative, grounded theory study. The study population included antenatal providers (midwives, family physicians, and obstetricians) practicing in Hamilton, Ottawa

Developmental and molecular characterization of novel staminodes in Aquilegia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The ranunculid model system Aquilegia is notable for the presence of a fifth type of floral organ, the staminode, which appears to be the result of sterilization and modification of the two innermost whorls of stamens. Previous studies have found that the genetic basis for the identity of this new organ is the result of sub- and neofunctionalization of floral organ identity gene paralogues; however, we do not know the extent of developmental and molecular divergence between stamens and staminodes. METHODS: We used histological techniques to describe the development of the

Decelerating spread of West Nile virus by percolation in a heterogeneous urban landscape.

Vector-borne diseases are emerging and re-emerging in urban environments throughout the world, presenting an increasing challenge to human health and a major obstacle to development. Currently, more than half of the global population is concentrated in urban environments, which are highly heterogeneous in the extent, degree, and distribution of environmental modifications. Because the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens is so closely coupled to the ecologies of vector and host species, this heterogeneity has the potential to significantly alter the dynamical systems through which pathogens pr

Circadian Timekeeping in the Tropics: Rhythmic Transcriptome and Diurnal Regulatory Networks in Rubroshorea leprosula.

Circadian rhythms allow plants to regulate internal processes to align with daily rhythms in the environment. Comparing circadian clocks across environments is essential because latitude-dependent variation in light and temperature imposes distinct selection pressures that shape the evolution and function of circadian timing systems. However, circadian clock studies have largely focused on temperate and subtropical species, leaving transcriptional circadian networks in tropical plants poorly understood. We report the comprehensive circadian transcriptome of Rubroshorea leprosula, a dominant sp

Co-Circulation of Tick-Borne Bandaviruses and Orthonairoviruses Across Humans, Livestock, and Rats in Pakistan: Serologic Evidence and Public Health Implications.

Tick-borne viruses (TBVs) pose significant public health and economic threats. Pakistan has endemic Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), but evidence suggests broader TBV circulation. This study assessed the seroprevalence of thirteen TBVs (seven are members of the genus Orthonairovirus and six are members of the genus Bandavirus) in humans, livestock, and rats in Punjab, Pakistan. Serum samples (n = 794: 321 livestock, 253 human, and 220 rat) were collected from the Narowal, Lahore, and Faisalabad districts. Antibodies to viral NPs were detected using the luciferase immunoprecipitat
