Complex Wounds in Ectodermal Dysplasias: Translating Discovery to Therapy.

The "Complex Wounds in Ectodermal Dysplasias: Translating Discovery to Therapy" conference aimed to accelerate the development of novel treatments for complex wounds in ectodermal dysplasias. The conference brought together leading experts in keratinocyte biology, wound healing, and clinical care to explore the mechanisms underlying delayed wound healing and identify strategies to improve patient outcomes (conference participants; Table S1). The meeting utilized a think-tank format, fostering collaborative discussions and brainstorming in breakout groups. The participants identified high-prior…

Prosthodontic Management of a Patient with Ectodermal Dysplasia: Case Report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is an inherited disorder that affects the ectoderm of a developing embryo and impacts structures that originate from it. It typically presents as a triad of missing teeth (anodontia/hypodontia), sparse hair (atrichosis/hypotrichosis), and lack of sweat glands (hypohidrosis), often accompanied by nail dystrophy and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. There are two main types of this condition: X-linked anhidrotic or hypohidrotic and hidrotic (autosomal type). The oral manifestation of ED may include anodontia or hypodontia, with or without cleft lip and palate. Tooth loss lea…

Neuropsychological Profile of an Adolescent Female With Ectodermal Dysplasia With Hypohidrosis.

The ectodermal dysplasias are a group of rare genetic disorders that are caused by abnormalities in cell and tissue development of the embryonic ectoderm. A paucity of research has systematically examined the cognitive, academic, and psychological phenotype of individuals with ectodermal dysplasia. We describe the neuropsychological profile of a female adolescent with ectodermal dysplasia with hypohidrosis. Using a battery of standardized tests, we assessed the adolescent's intellectual functioning, language processing, visuospatial and visuomotor functioning, perceptual reasoning, sensory-mot…

Prosthodontic Rehabilitation of a Child with Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Preliminary Report.

This case history report describes the dental management of a child with ectodermal dysplasia with the premise that appropriate and early dental management positively impacts the oral health-related quality of life of such patients, irrespective of the age at which treatment is initiated.

Giant Temporal Lobe Abscess in a Patient With Ectodermal Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: To present the first reported case of a temporal lobe abscess in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia (ED). To increase awareness among neurotologists of the otological manifestations and complications of ED, we describe a conservative approach in comparison with the surgical strategies to repair bony defects of the tegmen tympani. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical capsule report. PATIENT: A 44-year-old man with ED presented with retroauricular pain and high-grade fever after Eustachian tube catheterizations to treat an effusive otitis media. Since many signs indicated meningitis, a computed …

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical case with a longitudinal approach.

AIM: This paper describes a clinical case of a male with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia submitted to rehabilitation and occlusal dental interventions with follow-up from 3 to 14 years of age. BACKGROUND: Due to the severe effects on function and esthetics, the clinical manifestations of ectodermal dysplasia exert a negative impact on quality of life. However, oral rehabilitation in childhood poses a challenge due to growth and development. CASE DESCRIPTION: A male with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia began dental intervention at the age of 3 years. The clinical and radiographic exams re…

Oral rehabilitation of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia with prosthodontics treatment.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a rare, congenital disease that involves the sweat glands, scalp hair, nails, skin pigmentation, and craniofacial structure. Oral symptoms of ED include multiple tooth abnormalities (such as hypodontia, anadontia, impacted teeth, and peg-shaped or conical anterior teeth) and lack of normal alveolar ridge development. A 12-year-old male patient, in the absence of any other systemic abnormalities, exhibited typical characteristics of ED, visited our department of pedodontics and preventive dentistry at Panineeya Mahavidyalaya Institute of Dental Sciences and Research…

Subretinal fibrosis and uveitis syndrome in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia.

PURPOSE: To report a case of subretinal fibrosis and uveitis syndrome in association with ectodermal dysplasia. METHODS: Chart review of a patient with subretinal fibrosis and uveitis syndrome and ectodermal dysplasia. RESULTS: The authors identified one case of a patient with the diagnoses of subretinal fibrosis and uveitis syndrome and ectodermal dysplasia. CONCLUSIONS: This represents an uncommon case of a patient with the diagnoses of both subretinal fibrosis and uveitis syndrome and ectodermal dysplasia.

A child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with features of a collodion membrane.

Collodion membrane is a presenting phenotype common to several disorders, predominantly congenital ichthyoses. Seventy percent of infants born with hypohidrotic (anhidrotic) ectodermal dysplasia are noted by their parents to have significant scaling and peeling. Although dry skin is a frequently reported sign in children with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, only one French study has reported a true collodion membrane at birth. We suspect that scaling with features of collodion membrane is more common in infants than is reflected in the literature, and we describe another such infant, later …

Analysis of craniofacial development in children with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasias (ED) are a heterogeneous group of inheritable disorders characterized by abnormal development of embryologic ectoderm derivatives. The purposes of this study were to: 1) create baseline cephalometric norms for male children with ED; 2) assess craniofacial growth and development in hypohidrotic ED male children with severe hypodontia, compared with non-ED children with class I dental relationships; 3) compare the craniofacial morphology of titanium dental implant-treated ED males with non-implant-treated ED males; and 4) correlate the severity of hypodontia to craniofacial…

New form of hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a Lebanese family.

We report a sister and brother born to consanguineous parents presenting with severe hypodontia, fine hair, and onychodysplasia. Five other relatives are similarly affected. The comparison with other ectodermal dysplasias is presented and discussed. The possibility of a new autosomal recessive form of ectodermal dysplasia is raised.

Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Report of a case with reticulated acropigmentation.

A 22-year-old black man noted punctate macular hyperpigmentation of the distal dorsal extremities around the age of 5 years. The hyperpigmentation progressed proximally and became confluent, forming a reticulated pattern. Dermatopathology revealed increased basal melanization. Keratosis palmaris et plantaris began at the age of 19 and steadily became more severe. Body and facial hair was scant, and scalp hair required cutting once every 2 years. Teeth developed normally but were carious. Fingernails were normal, but all toenails demonstrated thickening and transverse imbrications. Sperm counts
